Dishwasher components
Tub: stainless OR plastic; holds water + dishes.
Spray arms (upper + lower + sometimes middle): rotate; spray pressurized water.
Pump motor: circulates water through spray arms.
Drain pump: separate OR combined; pumps wastewater to drain.
Heating element: at bottom of tub; heats water + dries dishes.
Detergent dispenser: spring-loaded; releases at specific cycle point.
Rinse aid dispenser: dispenses each cycle.
Float switch: detects water level; prevents overflow.
Door latch + switch: starts cycle when closed; safety.
Control board: timer + cycle control.
Inlet valve: water supply; 120V solenoid.
Drain hose: to garbage disposal OR sink drain; high loop OR air gap.
Common dishwasher problems
Won't start:
- Door latch / switch
- Control panel / start button
- Thermal fuse
- Control board
No water filling:
- Inlet valve clogged / failed
- Water supply shutoff closed
- Float stuck
Won't drain:
- Drain hose clogged / kinked
- Drain pump failed
- Disposal not cleared (if connected)

Diagnostic procedure
Step 1 - Verify complaint: don't trust customer's "doesn't work"; reproduce.
Step 2 - Visual + listening:
- Power present?
- Lights on control panel?
- Water heard filling?
- Pump motor humming?
Step 3 - Door + safety:
- Door latch firmly?
- Door switch closing?
Step 4 - Test components:
- Multimeter: heating element resistance (15 - 30 Ω typical)
- Inlet valve: 24V at terminals when filling
- Drain pump: voltage + spin freely
- Float switch: position + actuation
Step 5 - Mechanical:
- Spray arm rotation by hand
- Clogged spray holes
- Filter cleanliness
Install requirements
Water supply: 1/2" hot water; shutoff valve under sink typical.
Drain: high loop OR air gap (per code).
Electrical: 120V; dedicated 15A circuit preferred (some shared with disposal).
Drain hose: to garbage disposal nipple OR sink drain inlet.
High loop: drain hose raised above flood-rim height to prevent backflow.
Air gap (some jurisdictions): counter-mounted; visible.
Common service tasks
Spray arm clean: remove + soak in vinegar; clear holes with paperclip.
Filter clean (modern): remove from bottom of tub; rinse food debris.
Customer education
Use rinse aid: better drying + prevents spots.
Don't pre-rinse heavily: modern detergents need food residue to work.
Load correctly: face dishes toward spray arms; don't block spray arm rotation.
Detergent type: dishwasher-specific (not hand soap; suds = bad).
Run hot water at sink first: ensures full hot water reaches dishwasher.
Clean filter regularly: modern dishwashers have user-clean filter.
Vinegar rinse monthly: descales + removes buildup.
Don't overload: water can't reach all surfaces.
Energy + water efficiency
ENERGY STAR: ~ 270 kWh/yr; ~ 3.5 gal per cycle.
Older dishwasher: 500 - 800 kWh/yr; 6+ gal per cycle.
Air-dry option: saves heating energy at cost of speed.
Cycle selection: shorter / lighter cycles for less-soiled loads.
Common dishwasher install mistakes
Wrong drain configuration (no high loop OR air gap = sewer water back-siphon). Skipped shutoff valve. Loose drain hose connection. Incompatible detergent (high suds). Power-overload shared with disposal circuit. Skipping water connection check.
When to replace
Repair > 50% of new cost. Multiple failures. 10+ years old + major failure. ENERGY STAR upgrade saves utility costs.

Smart dishwasher
Wi-Fi connectivity; cycle status + remote start; app diagnostics. Brand-specific apps. Custom-tier features (no real maintenance savings).
The single most-impactful dishwasher habit is the FILTER CLEAN + spray arm clearance on every service call. Customer's "doesn't clean well" is 80% of the time a dirty filter (modern dishwashers have user-cleanable filter) OR clogged spray arms. 10-minute cleaning resolves it. If it persists after cleaning, then investigate detergent type, water temp, water supply pressure. Educate customer on monthly filter cleaning; you build the relationship + the customer's dishwasher actually works.
