Contamination as a Root Cause: Decision Tree
Why this matters
Contamination is the failure cause techs most often treat as a symptom. Dirt, water, air, wrong fluid, or debris gets into a system, kills a part, the part gets replaced, and the contamination is still there to kill the next one. The repeat-failure call almost always traces back to a contamination source nobody found. This is the decision tree for proving contamination is the root cause and tracking it to where it enters, so the fix actually holds.

You suspect contamination, or you have a part that failed in a way contamination explains (scoring, clogging, corrosion, fouling). The goal is not just to clean it out; it is to find how it got in. Work from the obvious entry points to the hidden ones.
Step 1: Confirm it really is contamination
Before chasing a source, prove contamination is in play.
- If the failed part shows abrasive scoring, clogged passages, corrosion, or fouling, contamination is a strong lead. Continue.
- If the fluid or medium looks, smells, or feels wrong (cloudy, gritty, discolored, watery, sludgy), you have direct evidence. Continue.
- If filters or screens are loaded with debris, the system is already telling you it is dirty. Continue.
- If none of these are present, contamination may not be your root cause. Recheck wear pattern and other causes before going further.
Step 2: Identify what the contaminant is
The type of contaminant points straight at the entry path. Name it first.
- Solid debris (grit, metal, particles): ingress from outside, or a part shedding internally.
- Water or moisture: condensation, a breach letting it in, or a leak from an adjacent wet system.
- Air (where there should be none): a suction-side leak, a low fluid level, or improper fill.
- Wrong fluid or cross-contamination: the incorrect product was added, or two systems are leaking into each other.
- Biological growth or sludge: moisture plus time, stagnant conditions, or breakdown of the medium.
Each of these has typical entry points. Use the contaminant to aim the search.
Step 3: Track it to the entry point
Now find how it gets in. Check the likely paths for the contaminant type.
- For outside solids: look at every opening to the environment. Failed seals, missing or bypassed filters, open ports, worn boots, and breathing points are the usual doors. A filter that is missing, wrong, or installed backward is a classic.
- For internal solids: a part is shedding. The scoring or particles point at which component is wearing and feeding the system. The contaminant is then a symptom of that part, and that part is the root.
- For water: find the temperature cycling that condenses moisture, the breach in the boundary, or the adjacent leak. A cracked boundary between a wet and a dry side is common.
- For air: pressure-test or inspect the suction side. Air enters where pressure is below atmospheric and a seal is weak.
- For wrong fluid: trace the service history. Someone added the wrong product, or two circuits share a leak path.
Step 4: Distinguish source from symptom
This is the step that prevents the repeat failure.
- If the contaminant is generated inside the system (a wearing part shedding metal), the worn part is the root cause and the contamination is its symptom. Fix the part and flush the debris.
- If the contaminant enters from outside, the breach or missing barrier is the root cause. Fix the entry point and flush.
- If the contaminant is degraded medium (sludge from old fluid, growth from moisture), the root is the condition that let it degrade (overdue service, moisture, stagnation). Restore the medium and remove the condition.
If you stop at "cleaned it out" without naming which of these it is, you have not found the root.
Step 5: Remove the contamination and verify
Once the source is fixed:
- Flush or clean the system thoroughly. Debris left behind continues to circulate and damage.
- Replace consumed filters and screens. A loaded filter no longer protects.
- Replace the killed part. It is already compromised.
- Re-check after a short run. Fresh contamination on a new filter means you missed the source. Go back to Step 3.
The discipline that holds the fix
- A clean-out without a found source is a temporary fix, not a repair.
- Always ask: did this come from inside or outside.
- The contaminant type names the entry path; let it lead the search.
- Verify with a short run and a re-inspection; a clean re-check is the proof.
