Bypass a Nuisance Trip, Temporarily or Never, Decision Tree

Why this matters

A customer whose system keeps tripping on what looks like a nuisance fault will ask you, directly or indirectly, to make the tripping stop right now. Sometimes that is a reasonable request with a safe, temporary answer. Sometimes it is a request to disable a device that is correctly protecting them, and saying yes is how a tech ends up responsible for the fire, flood, or injury that followed. This tree is how you tell the difference before you touch anything, and it leads with the rule that decides everything else: you diagnose the trip before you ever consider bypassing it, never the other way around.

Start here: diagnosis comes before any bypass conversation

Never bypass, defeat, jumper, or hold closed a protective device before you have confirmed, through instrumented testing, why it is tripping. "It trips a lot, let's just bypass it for now" skips the one step that tells you whether bypassing is safe at all. If you have not yet run the load-testing method to confirm the trip is nuisance rather than real, stop here and do that first, this article assumes the diagnosis is already done.

Step 1: Confirm it is actually a nuisance trip, not a real one going unnoticed

A true nuisance trip is one where instrumented testing shows the monitored parameter staying within the device's normal operating range at the moment of the trip, meaning the device is tripping without a real underlying condition present. If your testing instead shows the parameter genuinely exceeding the rated threshold, this is not a nuisance trip candidate at all, it is the device correctly protecting against a real condition, and bypass is off the table regardless of how inconvenient it is. Step 2: Identify what kind of device is tripping

The bypass decision depends heavily on what the device protects against, and this is where the tree branches hard.

  • Life-safety and fire devices (ground-fault protection, gas safety shutoffs, high-limit thermal cutouts, pressure relief on a sealed vessel): never bypass, even temporarily, even for minutes, even with the customer's explicit request and a signed waiver.   • Equipment-protection devices (a motor overload, a low-refrigerant cutout, a dry-run protection on a pump): a genuinely confirmed nuisance trip on one of these can sometimes support a short, monitored, temporary bypass while parts are sourced, but only under the conditions in Step 3.
  • Nuisance/nonessential nuisance devices (nothing truly falls in this category if it is wired as a protective device; if a device trips and has no protective function at all, it is a wiring or control issue, not a bypass decision).

Step 3: If equipment-protection and confirmed nuisance, apply every condition below

A temporary bypass of a confirmed-nuisance, equipment-only protective device is defensible only when all of the following are true at once:

  • The root cause has been identified (drift, a failed sensor, a wiring fault causing a false signal) and a fix is scheduled, not indefinite.
  • The bypass is time-boxed to a specific, short duration you both agree on, not "until it becomes a problem."
  • You personally monitor the system, or install temporary instrumentation, for the bypass duration, so a real fault developing during the bypass window does not go unnoticed.
  • The customer is told in plain language, in writing, what protection is temporarily removed and what could happen if a real fault occurs during that window, and they accept that in writing.
  • The bypass is physically obvious and clearly tagged, so no one mistakes the system for fully protected, and so you or another tech does not forget it is in place.

If any one of these is missing, do not bypass. Fix it now, source the part faster, or take the equipment offline instead.

Step 4: If any condition in Step 3 fails, the answer is no, not "just this once"

The most common way a bypass turns into a permanent, forgotten hazard is a tech agreeing to "just this once" without the monitoring, the tag, or the written acknowledgment, and then the part takes three weeks to arrive and everyone forgets a bypass is live. If you cannot meet every condition, the honest answer is that the system runs unprotected until the fix is done, or it does not run at all.

Step 5: Remove the bypass the moment the fix is complete

A temporary bypass has one job: buy time until the real fix lands. The visit where you install the fix is the same visit you remove the bypass and verify the device is back to protecting normally, tested under load, not just visually reconnected. Do not leave a "we'll swing back to pull the bypass" open item. That is exactly the kind of loose end that turns into a permanent, forgotten hazard.
