Appliance Install Fundamentals Reference
Why this matters
Appliance installation seems simple but mistakes are common: improper venting, wrong fittings, code violations, damage to floors, future-leak issues. The tech who installs correctly + cleans up well + educates the customer creates loyalty + sells next service. This is the field card.
Pre-install checks
Before delivery / install day:
Verify product matches order:
- Customer ordered correctly
- Brand, model, capacity, color
- Energy ratings (if relevant)
- Accessories (kits, parts)
Verify space:
- Dimensions of opening / location
- Access path (doorways, stairs, hallways)
- Required clearances (sides, top, behind)
- Utility connections present + correct type
Verify utilities:
- Refrigerator: 120V outlet, water line (if ice maker)
- Range (electric): 240V 50A outlet
- Range (gas): gas shutoff + 120V outlet
- Dishwasher: 120V + plumbing + drain
- Washer: 240V (electric dryer) OR 120V (washer), water hot + cold, drain
- Dryer (electric): 240V 30A outlet
- Dryer (gas): gas shutoff + 120V + venting
If utilities don't match: install will fail OR be unsafe. Customer must address before install.
Refrigerator install
Pre-install:
- Outlet 120V dedicated (no shared circuit)
- Water line for ice maker (1/4" copper OR PEX with shutoff)
- Floor protection during move
Install:
- Position approximate location
- Connect water (if ice maker; use proper compression fitting OR PEX with shutoff)
- Plug in 120V
- Level (legs adjustable; bubble level)
- Test ice maker + water dispense (12-24 hours to start)
Common issues:
- Floor damage from rolling (use appliance dolly OR slider sheets)
- Water line crimped behind unit
- Saddle valve used (leaky; use proper shutoff)
- Not level (door doesn't close)
Dishwasher install
Pre-install:
- Cabinet opening clear
- Water supply hot
- Drain (high loop OR air gap)
- Electrical (often hardwired; some plug-in)
Install:
- Connect water (hot side; brass fitting)
- Connect drain (high loop OR air gap per code)
- Connect electric (hardwire OR plug)
- Slide into opening
- Anchor to countertop (don't anchor to top cabinet)
- Level
- Run cycle; check for leaks
Common issues:
- Drain loop missing (siphon)
- No air gap (where code requires)
- Anchored wrong (cabinet not countertop)
- Water line crimped
- Failure to insulate (some codes require)
Range (gas) install
Pre-install:
- Gas shutoff valve accessible
- Gas line size adequate
- 120V outlet for ignition / electronics
- Adequate clearance to combustibles
Install:
- Connect flexible gas line (rated, not generic flex)
- Verify shutoff valve operation
- Plug in 120V
- Test ignition
- Test all burners (low + high flame)
- Test oven ignition + heat
- Pressure test (leak detection at fittings)
- Anti-tip bracket (per code)
Common issues:
- Wrong flex line (must be appliance-rated)
- Insufficient gas pressure
- Pilot won't stay lit
- Anti-tip bracket missing (code violation; tip-over hazard)
Range (electric) install
Pre-install:
- 240V 50A receptacle
- Cord matches receptacle (3-prong OR 4-prong)
- Anti-tip bracket
- Clearance to combustibles
Install:
- Connect cord to range (if not factory-installed)
- Plug into outlet
- Anti-tip bracket
- Test all burners + oven
3-prong vs 4-prong:
- Pre-1996 outlets: 3-prong (uses neutral as ground)
- 1996+ NEC requires 4-prong (separate ground)
- Replacement range may need cord change to match outlet
- DON'T defeat ground (jumper, etc.)
Washer install
Pre-install:
- Hot + cold water shutoffs
- Drain (standpipe with P-trap OR laundry sink)
- 120V outlet
- Drip pan recommended
Install:
- Connect hot + cold water hoses (don't overtighten; rubber gasket)
- Connect drain hose (secure into standpipe / sink)
- Plug in
- Level (4 feet adjustable)
- Test cycle; check for leaks
Common issues:
- Drain hose pops out during cycle
- Hot + cold reversed
- Hoses old (recommend replacement during install; bursts catastrophic)
- Not level (vibration; walking machine)
Dryer (electric) install
Pre-install:
- 240V 30A outlet
- Vent path (4" minimum; smooth bore; max length per code)
- Vent terminates outside (not attic, crawl)
- 120V outlet (some controllers need)
Install:
- Connect cord (factory OR matches outlet)
- Connect vent (foil duct, sealed)
- Plug in
- Test heat + tumble
- Verify vent flow at exterior termination
Common issues:
- Vent restricted (kinks, length)
- Vent terminates in attic OR crawlspace (code violation; fire risk)
- Improper venting material (only foil OR aluminum; not plastic)
- Lint buildup if not cleaned regularly
Dryer (gas) install
Pre-install:
- Gas shutoff
- 120V outlet
- Vent path
- Adequate clearance
Install:
- Connect flex gas line
- Verify shutoff
- Connect vent
- Plug in 120V
- Test ignition + heat
- Pressure test
Common issues:
- Same as gas range
- Plus vent issues like electric dryer
Microwave (over-range)
Pre-install:
- Cabinet supports weight
- Outlet at top (often inside top cabinet)
- Vent (recirculating OR ducted)
- Mounting plate to wall studs
Install:
- Mount template on wall
- Mark studs
- Drill mounting holes
- Install mounting plate (lag bolts into studs)
- Lift microwave (2 people; heavy)
- Hook onto mounting plate
- Connect electrical
- Anchor with screws to top cabinet
- Connect vent if ducted
Common issues:
- Not into studs
- Wrong height (too low = countertop interference)
- Vent direction not switched (factory ducted; needs ducting in)
- Recirculating chosen when ducted possible
Garbage disposal
Pre-install:
- Switch (separate OR battery-corded)
- Electrical (hardwired OR plug)
- Plumbing connections
Install:
- Mount to sink flange
- Connect drain (dishwasher port if dishwasher present; sink drain)
- Plug knockout for dishwasher line (if no dishwasher)
- Electrical connection
- Test (run water; turn on)
Common issues:
- Dishwasher knockout NOT removed (dishwasher won't drain)
- Drain alignment difficult (use offset drain if needed)
- Loud (vibration); secure to sink
Ice maker + refrigerator water line
Saddle valve (DON'T):
- Pierces existing water line
- Cheap; common in older installs
- Eventually leaks (poor seal)
- Not code-compliant in most jurisdictions
Proper shutoff:
- T-fitting OR stop valve in line
- 1/4" tubing to refrigerator
- Compression fitting OR push-on
- Easy to shut off for service
PEX vs copper:
- PEX easier
- Both acceptable
- 1/4" OD typically
Permit considerations
Many appliance installs DON'T require permit:
- Like-for-like replacement
- Existing utilities
Some DO:
- New gas line
- New electrical circuit
- New vent
- Plumbing change
When permit required: licensed contractor; inspection.
