Water Test Accuracy (Titration vs Strip)
Why this matters
A pool tech who tells a customer "your chlorine is 3 ppm" based on a test strip is making a decision that drives anything from a small chemical add to a full acid wash. The test-strip reading at 3 ppm could actually be anywhere from 1.5 to 6 ppm depending on age of the strips, ambient temperature, lighting, and the user's color perception. A titration test from a kit costs slightly more per test than a strip but reads accurately to within 0.2 ppm. The accuracy difference matters when chemistry decisions are being made: an over-shock from a misread is uncomfortable for swimmers; an under-shock leaves contamination. Knowing the trade-offs and matching the test method to the decision is the diagnostic skill that separates the closer from the order-taker.

The trade-off is accuracy versus speed and cost. A pool tech with 30 stops per day cannot run lab tests at every stop; but for the customer with a chronic problem, a single accurate test is worth more than 10 inaccurate ones.
Why test strips are limited
Test strips work by chemical reaction producing a color change. The reaction is affected by:
- Strip age: degrades over months even sealed; opened strips degrade within weeks
- Storage temperature: heat or moisture destroys reagents
- User color perception: comparing strip color to printed chart is subjective
- Lighting conditions: outdoor sunlight, indoor fluorescent, dim light all read differently
- Water sample temperature: cold water reacts more slowly; warm water faster
- Sample timing: read at the right moment per the strip instructions; early or late produces wrong reads
The fundamental issue: the strip has 5 to 8 color blocks for the full range. Discriminating between adjacent blocks is +/- 0.5 to +/- 1.5 ppm depending on the parameter. For chlorine in the typical 1 to 3 ppm range, this is significant.
When test strips are acceptable
- Customer-side quick check between professional service
- Initial walk-up read to identify the rough condition
- Quick verification after chemical addition (when "chlorine is high" or "chlorine is low" is the only decision being made)
- Non-critical pools (small inflatable, brief-use)
When test strips are not acceptable
- New plaster chemistry monitoring (LSI and pH precision critical)
- Stain-cause identification (need accurate metal readings)
- Algae bloom recovery (need accurate chlorine measurement)
- Customer dispute or insurance situation
- High-cost decisions (acid wash, full re-plaster) downstream of the test
- Chemistry drift investigation
Reagent kit (Taylor / LaMotte) accuracy
Liquid reagent kits use color comparators (a tube of pool water with reagent added; color matched to a printed scale).
Better than strips because:
- Larger sample size (10 to 15 mL) is easier to read color
- Tube format isolates the sample from ambient color contamination
- Reagents are more stable than dried-on-strip
- Calibrated comparator block reduces user judgment
Typical accuracy: +/- 0.5 ppm chlorine, +/- 0.2 pH.

FAS-DPD titration for chlorine
For chlorine readings above 5 ppm or for any critical chlorine decision:
- Add DPD powder to sample (produces pink color proportional to chlorine)
- Add FAS reagent drop-by-drop until pink color disappears
- Each drop = 0.2 ppm chlorine
- Read directly from drop count
Accuracy: +/- 0.2 ppm.
This is the gold-standard chlorine test for pools. Strips and standard reagents cannot accurately read above 5 ppm; titration reads any concentration.
Digital photometer
Higher-end professional service uses a digital photometer:
- Sample placed in a meter
- LED light passes through sample to a detector
- Computer interprets the color/light shift and reads numeric value
- Eliminates user color-judgment error

For mystery problems or disputed situations:
- Collect sample in sterile bottle
- Ship to commercial laboratory (HACH, Pace, regional water-quality labs)
- Result in 24 to 72 hours
- Cost a modest typical
Lab analysis reveals metals, bacteria, exotic contamination, and parameters not measurable in field kits. For a customer with chronic unexplained problems, one lab analysis is often the answer.
What to test, when, and how
Routine service visit (weekly)
- Chlorine: reagent kit (FAS-DPD titration if reading appears over 3 ppm)
- pH: reagent kit
- Total alkalinity: reagent kit
- Cyanuric acid: reagent kit (every 4 to 6 weeks)
- Calcium hardness: reagent kit (every 4 to 6 weeks)
Strips are not sufficient for this level of work. Use a reagent kit.
