How to Balance Pool Water Chemistry

Why this matters

Water chemistry is the foundation of pool service. Unbalanced water damages plaster, vinyl liners, equipment, swimmers' eyes + skin. A pool tech testing + adjusting chemistry properly each visit prevents 80% of equipment failures + 100% of customer-side complaints about "cloudy water" or "burning eyes." This is the working procedure.

Standard service procedure

Step 1: Sample water

  1. Submerge bottle 12-18" below surface (not surface; not bottom)
  2. Cap underwater
  3. Sample is fresh + representative

Step 2: Test

Run test for all 6-7 parameters; record on service report.

Step 3: Adjust chlorine (sanitation)

Below 1 ppm: shock dose.

Chlorine product:

  • Liquid chlorine (12.5% sodium hypochlorite): fast-acting, no stabilizer added
  • Calcium hypochlorite tablets/granular (Cal Hypo): adds calcium hardness
  • Sodium dichlor (Dichlor): granular, slow-dissolve, ADDS stabilizer
  • Trichlor tablets: feeder use, ADDS stabilizer

Customer at proper stabilizer: liquid chlorine.

Salt pool: chlorinator generates chlorine from salt; verify cell operating.

Shock dose: typically 7-10 ppm initial; falls to 2-3 ppm over 24 hours.

Step 4: Adjust pH

pH high (above 7.6): muriatic acid or sodium bisulfate. Lower carefully (high alkalinity buffers pH; large dose needed).

pH low (below 7.2): sodium carbonate (soda ash). Raises pH + alkalinity slightly.

Step 5: Adjust alkalinity

Low (below 80): sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). Raise gradually over a few visits.

High (above 120): muriatic acid. Same as pH; lowers both.

Step 6: Adjust calcium hardness

Low (below 200): calcium chloride pellets. Aggressive water etches plaster + dissolves grout.

High (above 400-500): can cause scaling. Hard to lower without partial drain + refill.

Step 7: Adjust stabilizer (cyanuric acid)

Low (below 30): cyanuric acid (granular). Protects chlorine from UV.

High (above 100): only fix is to drain + refill partially. Over-stabilization REDUCES chlorine effectiveness ("chlorine lock").

  • Test results + treatments

Common chemistry problems

Cloudy water

Often: high pH + scale formation, OR insufficient chlorine, OR high stabilizer locking out chlorine.

Fix:

  • Test all parameters
  • Shock to 10 ppm chlorine
  • Run filter 24-48 hours
  • Vacuum debris from bottom
  • Reduce stabilizer if > 80 ppm (partial drain)

Green water (algae)

Often: low chlorine, high stabilizer, or both.

Fix:

  • Brush walls + bottom thoroughly
  • Shock heavily (15-20 ppm chlorine)
  • Algaecide (copper-based; use cautiously, may stain plaster)
  • Run filter 48-72 hours
  • Re-test; verify chlorine 2-3 ppm sustained

Yellow / black algae

Mustard or black algae; stubborn.

Fix:

  • Higher chlorine + scrubbing
  • Specific algaecide product
  • Sometimes drain + acid wash needed for severe

Stained plaster

Metal staining (iron, copper) - adds to water from city supply or copper plumbing.

Fix:

  • Stain remover product (ascorbic acid + chelant)
  • Adjust water source if continued

Eye + skin irritation

Often: improper chlorine OR pH too low/high OR chloramines (combined chlorine).

Fix:

  • Check free vs total chlorine

  • Not waiting for circulation: test immediately reads wrong
  • Using shock with stabilizer when stabilizer already high: "chlorine lock"
  • Ignoring TA + CH: pH bounces uncontrollably
  • Putting acid + chlorine in pool together: dangerous chlorine gas
  • Adding calcium to a hard-water-fill pool: scaling everywhere
  • Forgetting to test combined chlorine: chloramines hidden

Safety considerations

  • Never mix pool chemicals (acid + chlorine = chlorine gas)
