Variable-Speed Pump Programming and Optimization

Why this matters

The DOE energy-conservation rule effective July 19, 2021, requires that nearly every newly manufactured residential pool pump above 0.711 total horsepower be variable-speed capable. Most pools installed since that date have variable-speed pumps. Most service customers don't know how to program them correctly - they either run them on the highest speed all day (wasting energy) or on the lowest speed all day (insufficient turnover). A properly programmed variable-speed pump saves the customer 50-80 percent on pool pump electricity costs while maintaining proper filtration and circulation. This article covers the programming approach.

When to use this procedure

  • New variable-speed pump installation
  • Customer-inherited pump where the prior programming is unknown
  • Customer complaining about high electricity bills
  • Pool water-quality issues that may be related to insufficient turnover
  • Quarterly checkup on existing programmed pumps

Tools and materials

  • The pump's installation manual (each brand has different menu navigation)
  • Flow meter (optional but valuable for verifying turnover)
  • Pressure gauge on the filter
  • Test kit for chlorine and pH (to evaluate the chemistry impact)
  • Documentation of the pool size (gallons), filter rating, and any special equipment

Background: turnover and flow rate

Pool circulation is measured by "turnover" - the number of hours required to circulate one full pool volume through the filter:

Pool type Target turnover
Residential pool 8-12 hours
Spa 30 minutes
Commercial pool (public) 6 hours or less per code
Pool with high bather load 6-8 hours

Calculate the required flow rate:

  • Pool gallons / target turnover hours = gallons per hour
  • Divide by 60 = gallons per minute (GPM)

Example: 20,000 gallons / 10 hours = 2,000 GPH = 33 GPM target flow rate

The variable-speed pump's RPM directly correlates with flow rate. The pump's curve in the manual maps RPM to GPM at various filter pressures. The goal is to find the RPM that delivers the target GPM at the system's actual pressure drop.

Step 1: Verify the equipment

Before programming:

  1. Confirm pump make, model, and capability (some installs have a single-speed pump claimed to be variable; check the actual model number)
  2. Check pump cabinet - RPM display, speed setting buttons, schedule programming
  3. Verify the controller is interfacing correctly (some systems use the pool automation panel; others use the pump's local panel)
  4. Document the existing program (write down each schedule's RPM and time)

Step 2: Identify the pool's load profile

Different times of day require different pump operation:

The total program is a sequence of these modes throughout the day.

Step 3: Design the program

A typical residential program might be:

10:00-4:00 PM Filtration 2,200 6 hours
4:00-6:00 PM Cleaner 2,800 2 hours (if scheduled)
6:00-10:00 PM Filtration 1,800 4 hours

Total: 14 hours of actual pumping (in this example), with most time at lower RPM. Compare to the pre-VS pump that ran 8 hours at 3,450 RPM - significant energy savings.

Step 4: Enter the program into the pump

Each brand differs:

Pentair Intelliflo / SuperFlo VS:

  1. Press "Quick Clean" or "Schedule" depending on the controller
  2. Enter Program 1 start time and end time
  3. Set RPM for Program 1
  4. Repeat for Programs 2, 3, 4 (most VS pumps have 4-8 program slots)
  5. Confirm and save

Hayward TriStar VS / Super Pump VS:

  1. Press "Menu"
  2. Navigate to "Speed Setup" or "Program"
  3. Set each schedule's start time, duration, and RPM
  4. Save and exit

Jandy Stealth VS / ePump:

  1. Use the controller interface or the AquaLink RS panel if installed
  2. Set Speed 1 (low), Speed 2 (medium), Speed 3 (high), Speed 4 (priming/cleaner)
  3. Set schedule times for each speed

Black & Decker, Sta-Rite, Aqua-Flo:

Step 5: Verify the program

After entering:

  1. Watch the pump go through one full cycle (24 hours, if practical)
  2. Verify each scheduled change occurs at the right time
  3. Verify RPM matches the program
  4. Check filter pressure under each scheduled RPM (note for the customer file)
  5. Verify chemistry remains stable

Some VS pumps have a "Run" or "Test" mode that lets you manually verify each speed before saving the schedule.

Step 6: Calculate energy savings

Variable-speed pumps save energy non-linearly. The "affinity laws" govern pump physics:

  • Flow varies linearly with RPM (half RPM = half flow)
  • Pressure varies with square of RPM (half RPM = 1/4 pressure)
  • Power varies with cube of RPM (half RPM = 1/8 power consumption)

Running at half speed for twice as long delivers the same total turnover with about 1/4 the energy consumption. This is the variable-speed economic case.

The result: a typical residential pool that consumes 4-6 kWh per day on a single-speed pump can drop to 1-2 kWh per day on a properly programmed VS pump.

Common operational adjustments

Pool with attached spa:

  • Spa needs high flow for jet operation
  • Configure a "spa mode" schedule that automation can trigger on demand
  • Spa overflow returns water to the pool; balance the system

Pool with attached water feature (waterfall, deck jets):

  • The water feature has a flow-rate requirement to look right
  • One pump can handle both if sized correctly; high-end installs may have a dedicated feature pump
  • Program the feature schedule into the same pump or set up a separate device

Pool with automatic pool cleaner (suction-side):
