Pool Surface Staining - Diagnostic

Symptom

Customer reports stains, discoloration, or spots on the pool surface - walls, floor, or steps. The diagnostic separates metal stains (treatable with sequestering agents) from organic stains (treatable with chlorine + scrubbing) from algae remnants from etching (which is permanent). Different causes = different treatments.

Likely Causes

  • Metal staining (iron, copper, manganese) - 30 % of stain calls
  • Organic staining (leaves, algae remnants, biological residue) - 25 %
  • Calcium scaling (white-gray deposits, especially at water line) - 15 %
  • Algae shadows (faded but persistent areas after algae bloom) - 10 %
  • Etching / loss of plaster surface - 8 %
  • Stains from pool toys, dyes, marker residue - 5 %
  • Tannins from leaves dropped in pool - 4 %
  • Salt cell deposits (white residue near return jets) - 3 %

Diagnostic Steps

  1. Identify the color + pattern:
  • Brown / orange → iron
  • Blue / green tint → copper (sometimes from algaecide overuse)
  • Black / dark gray → manganese OR black algae
  • White / gray powdery → calcium scale
  • Dark with sharp edges → organic (leaf stain, etc.)
  • Light fade in patches → algae shadow / under-treatment
  1. Test water for metals. Iron + copper kits cheap; manganese needs lab test. High readings confirm metal staining.
  2. Test water hardness + alkalinity. Calcium scale = high calcium + high alkalinity combination.
  3. Vitamin C test for iron. Hold a vitamin C tablet (ascorbic acid) against the stain underwater for 10 seconds. If the stain lifts immediately, it's iron-based.
  4. Brush test. Aggressive nylon brush on the stain:
  • Comes off easily → organic
  • Persists → metal or scale OR plaster damage

Resolution

  • Iron staining:
    1. Adjust pH to 7.0 - 7.2 (slightly acidic helps the treatment)
    2. Apply iron sequestering agent (Metal Magic, Stain Free) per label
    3. Brush stain area; iron should release
    4. Restore normal pH after stain clears
  • Copper staining:
    1. Same approach as iron, but use copper-specific sequestrant
    2. Identify source of copper (often algaecide overuse) + reduce
  • Calcium scaling:
    1. Lower pH temporarily (7.0 - 7.2 range)
    2. Scrub with stiff brush; may need pumice stone on heavy deposits
    3. For chronic scaling: install/maintain water softener; reduce calcium hardness
  • Organic staining:
    1. Shock to 10 ppm chlorine
    2. Brush + circulate 24 - 48 hours
    3. Vacuum debris
  • Plaster etching:
    • Cannot be cleaned - surface itself is damaged from low pH or aggressive water
    • Acid wash (specialty service) restores surface
    • Heavily etched plaster needs replastering (major job)
  • Salt cell residue:
    • Acid-clean salt cell (see Salt Cell Maintenance HowTo)
    • Brush off white residue from return-jet area

The biggest cause of pool staining isn't bad luck - it's water chemistry that allowed metals or scaling to precipitate. After fixing the immediate stain, address the root: high TDS, imbalanced pH, hard fill water. Without these fixes, the stain returns within months.

Prevention

  • Maintain proper chemistry (especially pH + calcium hardness)
  • Test water annually for metals on systems with well water (iron + manganese common)
  • Use a hose-end metal filter when filling from a well
  • Brush walls weekly to prevent algae attachment that then becomes a stain
