Spa Overflows to Pool Only on Low Speed Decision Tree
Why this matters
A pool-spa combo where the spa silently drains overnight into the pool every time the pump runs on low speed is a classic intermittent fault. Customer wakes up to a spa one foot lower than yesterday. Tech shows up on a fixed pump speed, hot tub stays full, no leak found. Three callbacks later somebody finally puts it together: the automation runs an overnight low-speed filter cycle and that is when the spa drains. The decision tree below isolates the cause to the suction-return-side hydraulic balance, the valves, or the spa drain check, in a path that catches the problem the first visit.
Symptom presentation
Spa water level falls overnight or during a programmed low-speed run. Pool level rises by the same volume. No external leak. When the pump runs in spa or spillover mode, the spa holds level normally. Heater may flag low-flow during the unintended siphon. Customer sometimes reports the spa "draining toward the pool" through the spillover edge - that drain is not gravity flow; it is a back-siphon through a stuck valve or check.
Quick checks
- Identify the valve configuration. Most combos have a Jandy or Pentair three-port intake actuator and a three-port return actuator. Some have a separate spillover valve. Note the make and the cam settings.
- Check the actuator cam stops. An actuator that does not fully rotate to its pool-only position leaves the spa suction or return cracked open. The cam stop screws or the toggle position on the front of the actuator should be verified.
- Inspect for a spa-return check valve. Most properly-built combos include a check valve on the spa return line specifically to prevent back-siphon when the system is in pool mode. Find it on the spa-side plumbing near the equipment pad.
- Look at the relative elevations. If the spa floor is above the pump's hydraulic centerline, gravity wants to drain it into the pool any time both lines are connected.
- Check the automation schedule. If the unintended drain happens only during a programmed low-speed event, the automation is energizing the pump without commanding the actuators to spillover or pool position.
Isolation tree
Step 1: Run the pump in pool-only mode at low speed and observe spa level for 30 minutes. If level falls, the spa suction or spa return is not fully isolated. Move to actuator and valve inspection. If level holds, advance.
Step 2: Stop the pump and observe spa level for 60 minutes. If spa level falls with pump off, the loss is back-siphon driven by elevation through a stuck check or partially open valve. The pump is not the cause. Move to check-valve inspection.
Step 3: Pull the cover on each three-port actuator. Confirm the diverter ball fully seats against the pool-side or spa-side port. A cracked diverter, a broken stop screw, or a sloppy cam mounting leaves a 5 to 15 percent open port. With the pump on low, that small opening passes a few gallons per minute, which over an 8-hour cycle drains the spa.
Step 4: Pressure-test the spa return check valve. The simplest field method is to plug the spa return at the wall fitting and put 5 PSI of air on the line at the equipment pad. A check that holds 5 PSI for 5 minutes is good. A check that decays is sticking open. The Jandy Never-Lube check and the FlowVis line-mounted check both have field-replaceable internals.
Step 5: If everything mechanical checks out, suspect the automation logic. Pentair IntelliCenter, Hayward OmniLogic, and Jandy iAquaLink all allow programmed schedules that may not include actuator-position commands. A "pool filter" schedule that runs the pump but leaves a spa-mode actuator from the prior heater call is a configuration bug, not a hydraulic problem. Review and correct the schedule.
Confirming diagnosis
A leaking actuator confirms when manual rotation past the cam stop closes the spa port and the drain stops. A failing check confirms when the line holds air on bench test but leaks pinned-back at the seat in service. An automation misconfiguration confirms when the spa drains during a specific scheduled program but not during a manual pool-only run with confirmed actuator positions.
Remediation
For actuator faults: replace the diverter ball if visibly cracked, replace the cam set if stop screws stripped, reset the cam stops per the actuator install instructions. Jandy Valve Actuator JVA part series is the common replacement; Pentair CVA-24T and the Compool replacements are the other field encounters. For failed checks: rebuild with the manufacturer's check-valve kit; replace the body if the seat is worn. For automation: reprogram the schedule to set both actuator positions on every pump-on event. Most controllers support "scenes" that bind pump speed, heater state, and actuator positions in a single named program.
After repair, verify with a 12-hour overnight watch: spa marked level at evening, level checked next morning, no change beyond evaporation (typically less than 1/4 inch on a covered spa).
