Replace a Pool Pump

Goal

Replace a failed pool pump on a residential in-ground or above-ground pool. Pool pumps fail from worn bearings (noisy operation), failed seals (water in motor), or thermal damage (running dry). 60 - 90 minute job; quote includes the pump + any new fittings + the labor.

Prerequisites

  • Replacement pump matched by:
    • HP (1, 1.5, 2 typical residential)
    • Voltage (115V single-phase typical residential; 230V on some pool electrical systems)
    • Pump style (single-speed, dual-speed, variable-speed - variable-speed is increasingly common + meets state efficiency mandates in some regions)
    • Inlet/outlet plumbing size (1.5" or 2" most residential)
  • PVC pipe + fittings to match existing connections
  • Teflon tape, PVC primer, PVC cement
  • 60 - 90 minutes

Steps

  1. Confirm pump replacement is the right call. Symptoms of pump failure:
  • Motor hums but doesn't spin → seized motor
  • Loud bearing noise → bearings failing (sometimes repairable, often replacement is cheaper)
  • Water leaking from the motor end → seal failure (the rear seal between water + motor)
  • Pump runs but no flow → impeller broken OR suction-side issue (verify before replacing)
  1. Customer briefing. "I'll replace your pool pump. The pool will be off filtration for 60 - 90 minutes. I'm also going to upgrade you to [variable speed if applicable, per state energy code]."
  2. Cut power at the pump's disconnect AND breaker. Verify dead before plumbing work.
  3. Close skimmer + return valves to isolate the pump area. Some pools have these; some require holding back water with plugs OR working quickly.
  4. Drain the pump housing by removing the strainer lid + opening the drain plugs (if equipped).
  5. Disconnect plumbing. Most pumps have unions at both inlet + outlet. Loosen unions; pump comes free with the unions intact. Bucket below for residual water.
  6. Disconnect electrical. Open the rear electrical conduit cover; disconnect wires. Note polarity if 230V (verify the wiring matches the new pump's diagram).
  7. Lift old pump out. Set aside for disposal per local rules.
  8. Position new pump. Verify it sits level + the unions align with existing plumbing. If alignment is off, additional fittings may be needed.
  9. Connect plumbing. Tighten unions hand + 1/4 turn (don't over-tighten the union nuts; they crack).
  10. Connect electrical. Follow the new pump's wiring diagram + match voltage to the existing service.
  11. Prime the pump. Fill pump housing with water through the strainer lid. Replace lid + tighten.
  12. Restore power. Pump should start; watch for:
  • Smooth motor startup
  • Pump priming (water visible in the strainer housing)
  • Flow at the return jets
  1. Verify no leaks at any plumbing or electrical connection during the first 10 minutes of operation.
  2. For variable-speed pumps: configure via the controller - set the schedule per the pool's needs. Smart customers want explanations of the energy savings.

Verification

  • Pump runs smoothly without unusual noise
  • Pump primed + circulating water through filter
  • No leaks at plumbing or electrical
  • Customer demonstrates understanding of any new controls (variable-speed)

Troubleshooting

  • Pump won't prime: air leak on the suction side OR pump housing not filled before startup. Check unions + skimmer-side connections.
  • Pump motor hums but doesn't spin: stuck impeller OR seized bearings (DOA new pump - rare). Verify by manually rotating; replace if defective.
  • Variable-speed pump throwing "communication" errors: configuration cable to the controller is loose OR the controller is incompatible.
  • Significant motor vibration: pump not mounted level OR plumbing pulling the pump out of alignment.

Variable-speed pool pumps are REQUIRED by state energy code in California, Florida, Texas, and several other states for any pump > 0.5 HP. Installing a single-speed replacement when the customer's state requires VS is a code violation + may cause customer's pool to fail inspection on next sale. Verify the customer's local code before quoting a single-speed.
