Filter Pressure Borderline High: Clean Now Vs Finish Route Threshold Decision Tree

Why this matters

Filter pressure that reads above the clean baseline but below the documented dirty-clean threshold puts the route tech in a real decision: stop and clean now, or finish the route and come back. Cleaning early wastes water and a backwash cycle that the filter did not need; deferring too long starves the heater, reduces SWG output, drops sanitizer hold, and risks blowing a torn grid or cracked cartridge under continued differential. This tree gives observable thresholds for the clean-now versus finish-route call without relying on the gauge alone.

Symptom presentation

The pressure gauge reads above clean baseline. The customer has not reported any complaint. The tech notices the elevated reading during routine pad inspection. Returns at the pool look weaker than usual on a quick visual; the heater is operating but its flow indicator is at the low end of its band; the SWG is reading lower instantaneous salt than the customer's actual salinity.

Quick checks

Record the current pressure with the pump at the customer's normal run speed. Compare against the documented clean baseline on the filter label or the prior service note. Compute differential as a percentage above clean: current pressure divided by clean baseline pressure. Read return flow visually at one return jet; a strong, sharp jet that pushes a noticeable cone is healthy, a soft boil is restricted. Check the pump basket for trapped debris and verify the skimmer basket is not full; a full basket can produce the same pressure rise as a dirty filter without any media loading.

Check the calendar. A filter that was cleaned 60 days ago and reads borderline is on its normal cycle. A filter cleaned 14 days ago reading borderline is signaling either a loading event (storm, customer party, vegetation drop) or a filter problem (torn grid, channeled DE, collapsed cartridge pleat).

Isolation tree

Branch A: pressure 25 percent or less above clean baseline, normal time since last clean, no flow complaint downstream. Disposition: finish route, document the reading, plan to clean at the next scheduled visit. Cleaning now is premature and consumes a backwash cycle the filter does not need.

Branch B: pressure 25 to 40 percent above clean baseline. Disposition: judgment call driven by downstream effects. If the heater, SWG, and chemistry are all holding, the filter can finish the route window. If the heater is showing low flow or the SWG is reading low instantaneous salt, clean today. The PHTA design guidance treats 25 to 50 percent above clean as the routine clean band.

Branch C: pressure above 40 percent of clean baseline, or at or above the manufacturer's published dirty-clean threshold (commonly 8 to 10 psi above clean for sand and DE, varying for cartridge). Disposition: clean now, do not defer. Above this band, internal differential begins to deform DE grids, channel media, or push debris through a torn cartridge into the pool.

Branch D: rapid pressure rise within days of a clean. Pressure was 14 psi a week ago and is 22 psi today. Disposition: clean and inspect the media. A channeled DE charge, a torn grid producing a fast-load channel, or a flocculant-loaded cartridge will all repeat the rise within days. Do not just clean and return; pull and inspect.

Branch E: pressure rise with weak returns and low pump suction. Pressure rose, but suction also dropped (vacuum gauge reads higher). Disposition: not a filter problem. The suction side is restricted (skimmer line, pump basket, impeller debris) or the impeller is partially clogged. Cleaning the filter will not improve flow.

Branch F: pressure rise immediately after a recent service event. A recent partial drain and refill, a recent re-DE, or a recent cartridge replacement preceded the rise. Disposition: investigate the prior work. Wrong DE quantity, wrong cartridge size, or a manifold not seated will all show as pressure outside normal.

Confirming diagnosis

The clean baseline pressure must be the value recorded immediately after the most recent clean with new or freshly washed media, at the customer's normal pump speed, with a full pool and clean baskets. A baseline written down on the wrong pump speed or after a partial clean produces wrong threshold math forever after. If the customer's pad does not have a documented baseline, use the first stable reading after the next full clean and write it on the filter label.

For DE filters, verify the DE charge weight matches the filter's published square footage. An undercharged filter will hold pressure well below threshold but pass dirty water; an overcharged filter rises to threshold quickly. For cartridge filters, verify the pleat count and inspect for collapsed or torn pleats, which produce normal pressure but degraded filtration. For sand filters, verify the sand level is at the manufacturer's specified depth and that the laterals are intact.

Remediation

For sand filters at threshold, backwash to clear water, rinse, return to filter, record the new baseline. For DE filters at threshold, backwash, rinse, recharge with the manufacturer's specified DE weight, and confirm the manifold and grids are seated. For cartridge filters, pull and hose down the cartridge, inspect for tears and pleat damage, replace if either is present. Record the post-clean pressure as the new baseline on the filter label and in the service note.

If pressure does not drop to baseline after a full clean, the media is loaded with material that backwash and rinse cannot release (mineral scale, oil binding from a heavy bather load, or a flocculant that bonded to the media). The media must be replaced or chemically cleaned, depending on type.

For a deferred-clean call (finish route, return tomorrow), confirm the next stop is on the schedule and that no chemistry or heater faults will accumulate overnight at the current restricted flow.
