Why this matters
Fiberglass and vinyl-lined pools both fail; they fail differently and need different repair approaches. A pool tech who treats a fiberglass crack like a vinyl tear (or vice versa) makes the problem worse and creates an unfixable situation. Customer expectations also differ: fiberglass is sold as 25-year-life premium product; a repair raises concerns about whether the pool is "ruined". Vinyl is sold as 7 to 12 year service life with planned liner replacement; a tear in year 5 is annoying but expected. Setting the right expectation and matching the repair to the substrate is the diagnostic edge.

Repair procedure for spider cracks (most common)
- Drain pool to expose the crack
- Clean the surface around the crack with acetone
- Open the crack with a Dremel or sharp tool (V-groove the crack to 1/8 inch wide for filling)
- Vacuum debris from the groove
- Mix gel-coat repair compound to match color (test on scrap or hidden area)
- Apply repair compound, slightly proud of surface
- Allow to cure (typically 24 hours)
- Sand smooth with progressively finer grits (start 220, finish 1500)
- Polish with buffing compound
- Wax to protect
For a spider crack network covering more than a few square feet, the repair becomes economically equivalent to a full re-coat (which is its own specialty).
Repair for structural cracks
A linear crack passing through the laminate (not just gel coat) is a structural concern:
- Drain pool
- Clean crack thoroughly
- Grind crack open to expose underlying laminate
- Apply structural epoxy primer
- Apply structural fiberglass cloth + epoxy in layers (typically 2 to 3 layers for residential)
- Cure (24+ hours)
- Top-coat with gel-coat matched to surrounding color
- Sand and polish
Structural fiberglass repair is a specialized skill; many pool techs sub it to fiberglass specialists. Pricing varies by repair size and travel; the sub's quote sets the floor.
Bond-line failure
The bond line between two molded fiberglass sections (the seam where the two pool halves were joined at manufacture) can fail with age. Symptoms: crack along the seam, often at the deepest part of the pool.
Repair is significantly more complex; often requires the manufacturer's specific bond-line repair kit and procedure. Cost: a significant cost.
For older bond-line failures on out-of-warranty pools, the cost-benefit may favor replacement of the entire pool rather than continued repair.
Osmotic blistering
Blisters form when moisture penetrates the gel coat into the laminate. Common in pools with frequent low pH (acid water) or excessive chlorine.
Small individual blisters: open with a knife, drain the moisture, clean, fill with epoxy, top-coat. Each blister is 15 to 30 minutes of work.
Widespread blistering: indicates underlying chemistry problem. Address water chemistry before repair; otherwise blisters return. Severe widespread blistering may require full re-coating.

Patch repair (most common)
- Locate the hole
- Clean a 4 to 6 inch area around the hole
- Apply a vinyl patch over the hole using vinyl adhesive
- For underwater patches: vinyl patch kits with underwater adhesive work on small holes (under 1/2 inch)
- For above-water patches: clean and dry the area; apply patch with adhesive; allow 24 hours cure
- Verify the patch holds (water loss test over 48 hours)

Locating a slow leak
For vinyl liner pools with slow water loss but no visible tear:
- Bucket test (compare pool water loss to evaporation in a bucket on the pool deck) - identifies whether the loss is a leak vs evaporation
- Dye test (add food coloring near suspected leak; watch for dye drawn into the leak)
- Listening for inflow at skimmer / return jets / lights with a stethoscope
- Inspect liner-to-wall interface for separation
A leak rate over 1/4 inch per day is a real leak (not evaporation). Below that, evaporation is likely.
Liner replacement decision
When the vinyl liner is over 10 years old, faded, or has multiple repairs, replacement is often the right call:
