Pool Equipment Pressure Issues

Symptom

Customer reports issues at the pool equipment pad - pressure too high (filter pressure climbing), pressure too low (no circulation), or fluctuating. Filter pressure is the most-misunderstood pool indicator + the most diagnostic. Right reading is the difference between "everything is normal" + "the filter needs immediate attention."

Likely Causes - High Pressure

  • Dirty filter (sand + DE filters most commonly; cartridge less commonly) - 60 %
  • Restricted return-side plumbing (valve partially closed, return jet blocked) - 15 %
  • Heater bypass valve closed when shouldn't be - 10 %
  • Failed pressure gauge (incorrect reading) - 8 %
  • Closed return valves - 5 %
  • Other - 2 %

Likely Causes - Low Pressure

  • Suction-side air leak - see Pump Air Lock HowTo - 30 %
  • Failed pump (impeller wear, capacitor) - 25 %
  • Blocked skimmer (debris) - 15 %
  • Skimmer / pump basket clogged - 12 %
  • Closed suction valve - 8 %
  • Loss of prime - 7 %
  • Other - 3 %

Diagnostic Steps

For high pressure:

  1. Read the gauge. Note current reading + compare to "clean filter" baseline (typically 10 - 15 psi for residential).
  2. Calculate pressure rise from baseline. A 5+ psi rise indicates the filter needs cleaning OR backwashing.
  3. Check post-filter pressure (if your gauge is at pump). Difference > 8 - 10 psi = filter restricted.
  4. Inspect return-side valves. All open? Any partially closed?
  5. For DE filters: check element condition during clean; old elements break down + pressure rises faster.
  6. For sand filters: check sand condition; old sand (5+ years) fragments + creates the same problem.

For low pressure:

  1. Check water level + skimmer basket. Common quick fixes.
  2. Inspect suction-side plumbing for air leaks per Pump Air Lock HowTo.
  3. Test pump alone by removing filter from the loop temporarily; if flow normalizes, filter is restricted.
  4. For pumps that hum but don't pump: likely capacitor or impeller jam.

Resolution

High pressure:

  • Dirty filter: backwash (sand / DE) or clean (cartridge) per protocol.
  • Restricted plumbing: clear blockage or reopen valves.
  • Old DE elements: replace.
  • Old sand: replace; full filter rebuild quote (separate service).

Low pressure:

  • Air leak: see Pump Air Lock HowTo.
  • Failed pump: see Replace a Pool Pump HowTo.
  • Blockage: clear + verify normal flow.
  • Loss of prime: refill pump housing + restart.

Verification

  • Pressure within normal range (10 - 18 psi for residential clean filter)
  • Steady flow at all return jets
  • No air bubbles in pump basket
  • Skimmer pulling debris correctly
  • Customer demonstrates understanding of pressure baseline + when to call

Filter pressure climbing rapidly (within hours of cleaning) signals a problem beyond normal debris - algae bloom in suspension OR a torn cartridge / failed sand letting debris through (then re-clogging immediately). Don't just clean repeatedly; diagnose the source.
