Diagnose Pump Air Lock & Suction Issues

Goal

Diagnose + resolve a pool pump that's losing prime, sucking air, or running with air bubbles in the strainer basket. Common service call ("the pump won't keep up like it used to"). The diagnostic separates suction-side leaks (air entering the system) from low water level (skimmer pulling air) from valve issues.

Prerequisites

  • Pool plumbing toolkit (channel-lock pliers, screwdrivers)
  • Soapy water spray bottle (leak detection)
  • Pool putty or two-part epoxy (temporary repairs)
  • 30 - 60 minutes

Steps

  1. Observe the pump strainer basket. Open the lid (cut pump first), inspect:
  • Constant bubbles streaming through during operation = suction-side air leak
  • Occasional bubbles after the pump primes = water level too low
  • Heavy foam or churning water = severe air entry
  1. Check the water level first. Should be MID-SKIMMER (half-way up the skimmer opening). If lower, the skimmer occasionally pulls air; refill before continuing.
  2. Open + close skimmer valves systematically. Common installs have 1 - 3 skimmers, possibly a main drain. Isolate one at a time + observe:
  • If air stops when one specific skimmer is closed off, the air is entering at THAT skimmer's plumbing
  • If air continues regardless of skimmer position, the leak is between the manifold + pump
  1. Visual inspection of suction-side plumbing:
  • Look at PVC unions + threaded fittings - bubbles or condensation
  • Pump strainer lid o-ring - flat, dry, or visibly damaged
  • Pump basket lid - cracked or not tightening fully
  • Check valve (if installed) - flapper stuck open or seized
  1. Pressure-test the suction side (if leak isn't visually obvious):
  • Plug each return jet + skimmer with rubber freeze plugs
  • With water + closed system, look for a vacuum-leak (pump pulling water down the strainer area while plumbing holds full)
  1. Test the pump's seal area. Run pump 5 minutes; touch the motor end (rear of pump where motor meets housing). Water dripping there = failed shaft seal; pump runs but loses prime + the motor will eventually fail from water exposure.

Resolution

  • Low water level: refill to mid-skimmer level; customer education on rainwater + evaporation effects.
  • Cracked strainer basket: replace.
  • Loose union: hand-tighten + 1/4 turn. Avoid over-torque.
  • Failed skimmer plumbing: pool-putty temporary patch + recommend professional plumbing repair (excavation potentially needed).
  • Failed check valve: replace; clear the flapper area of debris.

Prevention

  • Annual pump inspection during pre-season tune-up catches o-ring + check-valve issues
  • Customer education on maintaining water level (don't let it drop below skimmer mid-line)
  • Regular pump-lid o-ring replacement every 2 - 3 years

A pump running dry (no water in the housing) overheats in MINUTES - the motor + shaft seal fail catastrophically. NEVER restart a pump that's lost prime without first refilling the strainer housing through the lid. The lid must be tightly sealed after refilling; otherwise prime is lost again immediately.
