Pool Cleaner Bag Tear: Tolerable vs Replace-Now Condition Threshold Decision Tree
Why this matters
A pool cleaner debris bag (or filter cartridge on a robotic unit) that has lost integrity stops capturing fines, recirculates silt back into the pool, and loads the main filter on the next pump cycle. Replace too early and you waste consumables; leave it too long and the cleaner becomes a debris pump, dragging filter pressure up several psi between weekly visits and triggering avoidable backwash cycles. Field techs need a repeatable rule for what tear, weave-thinning, or seam separation crosses the line from cosmetic to functional failure, so the call is the same regardless of which tech is on the route.
Symptom presentation
Typical visit findings that prompt the question: visible slit or hole on the bag belly, frayed mesh at the cuff or seam, a bag that has gone limp and no longer holds shape when wetted, or a cleaner that ran the full cycle but the pool floor still shows a uniform silt film. On pressure-side cleaners the customer may report the bag "balloons funny" or pops off the throat. On suction-side cleaners the symptom is recurring skimmer-basket fines after each cleaner pass. On robotic units the equivalent is a fine-debris cartridge that shows tracking marks, end-cap separation, or a pleat that has collapsed flat.
Quick checks at the cleaner
Drain and invert the bag over a 5-gallon bucket. Rinse with a garden hose at fixture pressure (roughly 40 to 60 psi nozzle) and watch the mesh:
- Hold the wet bag up to sky or a bright work light. Look for daylight through the body of the mesh, not just at the cuff weave.
- Run a fingertip along every visible seam. Any seam where the stitch has pulled and the two panels separate more than 1/8 inch under light tension is a functional failure.
- Pinch and pull the mesh perpendicular to the weave at a representative belly spot. If the weave opens to a visible square aperture and does not spring back, the elasticized capture is gone.
- Inspect the cuff or zipper closure. A cuff that no longer cinches tight on the throat lets debris bypass into the discharge stream regardless of bag condition.
Decision thresholds
Use these observable thresholds to call tolerable vs replace-now. No estimates, no judgment calls; measure or compare against the threshold and act.
Replace now if any one of the following is true:
- Any through-tear longer than 1 inch on the bag body, regardless of location.
- Two or more pinhole or abrasion holes within a 3-inch radius (cluster wear indicates substrate failure, not isolated damage).
- A seam separation longer than 1/2 inch under light tension.
- Weave aperture has opened to where a grain of dry pool-deck sand (roughly 0.5 mm) passes through under finger pressure.
- Cuff or throat-clamp closure no longer seats; you can rotate the bag freely on the throat by hand.
- Bag is limp when wet and does not balloon under cleaner discharge (pressure-side only; indicates fabric stretch beyond elastic limit).
- For robotic cartridge: any pleat collapsed flat against an adjacent pleat, or end-cap glue line lifted from the media.
Tolerable, monitor next visit, if all are true:
- Largest tear is under 1 inch and on the side panel, not the belly.
- No more than one pinhole in any 3-inch radius.
- Seams intact under light pull.
- Weave still snaps back when stretched.
- Cuff cinches and holds position through the cycle.
Document the tolerable finding with a photo and a measured note (for example, "0.6 inch slit, side panel, no fines pass-through observed"). If two consecutive visits log a tolerable tear, replace on the second visit; cumulative wear catches up faster than a single inspection captures.
Confirming diagnosis when the call is ambiguous
If thresholds are borderline, run the cleaner for one full cycle, then pull the bag and check the skimmer and pump basket for fines that match the pool-floor silt color. Fines in the basket after a single cycle confirm the bag is bypassing and should be replaced regardless of the visible damage assessment. On robotic units, run a 1-hour floor-only program over a known-silted area, then inspect the cartridge: a cartridge that holds its capture (debris seated in the pleats, water exiting the discharge clear) is still functional; a cartridge that releases a plume when lifted is not.
For pressure-side units, observe the bag inflation. A healthy bag inflates uniformly and discharges water from the throat back-flow port in a clear stream. A failed bag inflates partially or unevenly and discharges visibly cloudy water, indicating bypass.
Remediation
When replacing, match bag mesh rating to the dominant debris load:
- All-purpose mesh for mixed leaf and silt: standard original equipment bag.
- Fine-silt mesh for pollen, algae fines, and dust environments: finer-aperture bag, expect shorter cycle range before bag loads.
- Leaf-bag or oversized bag for heavy organic load: coarser aperture, accepts larger debris volume.
Replace the throat clamp or cuff retainer if it shows fatigue cracks. On robotic units, replace the cartridge end-cap o-ring whenever swapping the cartridge if the o-ring shows compression set or surface scoring. After replacement, run a short verification cycle and re-check the pool basket for fines pass-through before leaving site.
Update the route sheet with the date and condition note. A bag that lasted significantly less than the route-average lifespan points to either an underlying mesh-quality issue (lot variance) or an upstream cause such as a torn skimmer basket allowing oversized debris through the cleaner intake. Run that follow-on diagnosis before assuming the bag itself was at fault.
