Cartridge vs DE vs Sand Filter Decision Matrix

Why this matters

Filter selection at install or replacement sets the maintenance cadence and the trouble-call frequency for the next 5-10 years of that pool. Cartridge, DE, and sand each have a place; the wrong place buys the customer pressure-rise calls, the next tech a cleaning every two weeks, and ultimately a complaint that "the pool was never clean." A decision matrix lets a tech defend the selection with a customer who saw a YouTube saying the opposite. The right answer changes by pool volume, plumbing layout, water source, water-restriction regime, and whether the pool runs a heater or salt cell.

Symptom presentation - what the customer is asking

Customer brings one of three asks: their existing filter is at end of life and they want guidance on what to replace it with; a builder is asking the spec for a new pool; or the tech is being asked to retrofit one type for another after a string of cleaning calls. The decision changes by question.

Quick checks before the matrix

  1. Pool volume in gallons and target turnover (typically 8-10 hr).
  2. Pump type and rated flow (VSP, single-speed, two-speed, GPM at typical RPM).
  3. Plumbing size (1.5 inch is universal resi; 2 inch lets sand and DE breathe; 2.5 inch on larger pools).
  4. Water source. Hard well water punishes DE grids and cart pleats. Soft city water is gentler.
  5. Local water restrictions on backwash discharge. Some jurisdictions prohibit backwash to storm drains.
  6. Whether there is a heater, salt cell, in-floor cleaner, or solar that has a minimum flow rate.

The matrix - feature by filter type

Filtration fineness (micron rating)

  • Cartridge: 10-15 microns typical, some new high-efficiency carts at 5 microns.
  • DE: 3-5 microns, finest of the three.
  • Sand: 20-40 microns typical, down to 5-10 microns with zeolite or specialty media.

For a customer who values water clarity above all else (vanishing edge, photo-ready, glass-tile), DE is the leader. For an average suburban customer who wants clear water and minimum hassle, modern cartridge does the job.

Cleaning method and frequency

  • Cartridge: hose rinse every 2-6 weeks, full chemical soak twice a year, full replacement every 1-3 years. No backwash discharge.
  • DE: backwash and recharge every 2-4 weeks, full breakdown and grid clean annually, grid replacement every 3-5 years. Backwash discharges DE-laden water - some jurisdictions require a separation tank.
  • Sand: backwash every 2-4 weeks, media replacement every 5-7 years. Backwash discharges sand fines.

For a customer in a water-restricted area, cartridge wins. For a customer who refuses to remember monthly tasks, sand wins (lowest skill, longest interval). For a customer who wants the cleanest water and accepts the most service, DE wins.

Flow rate and pressure drop

  • Cartridge: lowest pressure drop when clean, fastest pressure climb when loaded (high surface area but small pleat passages clog quickly under organic load).
  • DE: moderate drop when clean, moderate climb (DE itself is the consumable filter media).
  • Sand: highest pressure drop when clean (deep bed), slowest climb (huge holding capacity for dirt before pressure spikes).

For an old plumbing run with a single-speed pump, sand provides the most forgiving pressure curve. For a VSP that runs at low RPM most of the day, cartridge gives the cleanest flow at low speeds.

Footprint and weight

  • Cartridge: tall slim tank, easy to fit on a tight pad. 4-cart tanks 300-500 sq ft.
  • DE: medium tank, heaviest when full of water and DE.
  • Sand: wide squat tank, heaviest because of sand (300-600 lbs of media plus water).

For a tight equipment pad, cartridge wins.

Wear on equipment downstream

  • Cartridge: lowest particulate pass-through, cleanest water through the heater, cell, and chlorinator.
  • DE: lowest particulate pass-through when grids are healthy, highest if grids are torn (DE in the pool, white floor dust, grit in the cell).
  • Sand: highest particulate pass-through; over 10-plus years, fines wear pump seals and heat exchanger tubes.

For a pool with a high-end Pentair MasterTemp or Raypak gas heater plus salt cell, cartridge or DE protect the heat exchanger and cell better.

Water-source compatibility

  • Hard water (calcium 400-plus ppm): scales DE grids fast, hardens cart pleats. Sand is the most tolerant.
  • High iron well water: stains all three but sand cleans easiest. Cart pleats stain permanently brown.
  • Heavy organic load (heavy trees, near-coastal pollen): cart with degreaser soaks handles best; DE channels under heavy organic; sand passes too much.

Decision rules - call by the customer profile

Use these as starting positions, then adjust for above factors.

  • Suburban 20K-gallon vinyl liner, no cover, family of 4, average tree load, VSP, no salt: cartridge.
  • 30K-plus gallon plaster pool, vanishing edge, photo-ready clarity required: DE.
  • 15K gallon vinyl liner, retired owner who refuses monthly cleaning, no heater: sand with zeolite.
  • Salt pool, gas heater, hardwood floor, customer travels: cartridge for cell protection.
  • Commercial light-duty (HOA pool, daycare): sand for low skill, predictable backwash cadence.
  • Customer in California or AZ with strict water reuse: cartridge (no backwash discharge).
  • Pool with high iron well-water fill: sand with specialty iron-removal media.

Confirming the choice

Pull last 12 months of service tickets on the existing filter. Count cleanings, pressure-rise complaints, and downstream issues (heater calls, cell faults). A customer with 8 cleanings on a sand filter and three "weak return" calls is over-filtering for the water clarity they care about and is a cartridge upgrade candidate. A customer with a cartridge filter and a long history of cloudy-water complaints is a DE candidate.

Remediation - matching pump and plumbing

Whichever filter wins:

  • Filter rated sq ft should exceed pump's rated GPM at typical operating RPM. Undersized filter is the most common install mistake.
  • Plumbing should be at least as large as the filter port; reducing from 2 inch plumbing to 1.5 inch filter is a flow penalty that the customer will feel.
  • Bypass or controller integration for heater and chlorinator min flow.
