Termite Treatment Options - Liquid, Bait, and Localized
Why this matters
Termite damage costs U.S. homeowners and businesses billions of dollars annually per industry trade-association estimates. Treatment choices have evolved significantly - the trench-and-soak approach of the 1980s has been replaced by non-repellent liquid termiticides and below-ground bait stations, each with distinct advantages and price points. A pest-control company that can clearly explain the options to a customer wins the work; a company that pushes a single product loses to competitors who present the full picture.
Termite biology - the basics
Subterranean termites (Reticulitermes and Coptotermes in the US) form colonies in soil and forage through mud tubes for cellulose (wood). Drywood termites (Incisitermes) live entirely within wood without ground contact. Most U.S. residential termite work addresses subterranean species; drywood treatment is regional (warmer states) and uses different methods.
Subterranean colonies:
- Single colony may contain 100,000 to several million termites
- Workers forage continuously, returning to the central colony
- Reproductive swarmers emerge seasonally (spring through summer)
- Mud tubes are the bridge between soil and wood
- Damage is internal to the wood; surface appears intact until severe
Treatment categories
Liquid termiticides (the most common approach)
A continuous treated zone of insecticide-treated soil around the foundation perimeter. Termites traveling through the soil contact the insecticide and either die immediately (older products) or carry the active ingredient back to the colony (modern non-repellent products).
Modern non-repellent termiticides are the standard of care:

The "non-repellent" aspect is critical. Older repellent products (synthetic pyrethroids like permethrin) caused termites to avoid the treated zone - and if there was a gap, termites went around. Non-repellent products allow termites to pass through unknowingly, contact the insecticide, then carry it back to the colony, killing many additional termites via "transfer effect."
Application method:
- Trench around the foundation 4-6 inches wide, 4 inches deep (where slab construction or perimeter footing)
- Apply diluted product at specified rate per linear foot
- Soak depth: typically applied directly to soil; back-fill
- Plus drill-and-inject through slab where foundation construction requires (interior wall lines, garage floor)
- Plus treatment of any plumbing penetrations, joints, expansion strips
The technician must hold the appropriate state structural pest control license to perform termite treatment.
Bait stations (Sentricon and competitors)
Below-ground bait stations positioned at regular intervals around the foundation. Termites enter the station, feed on the cellulose-based bait, and carry chitin-synthesis-inhibitor (Sentricon's noviflumuron) or similar growth-regulator chemistry back to the colony. The colony cannot molt and dies over weeks to months.
Sentricon system (the dominant brand):
- Bait stations installed every 8-20 feet around the foundation
- Monitoring inspection every 3 months initially, then 6-12 months for maintenance
- Active ingredient: noviflumuron (chitin synthesis inhibitor)
- Documented colony eliminations in independent research
- Annual renewal contract
Alternative bait systems:
- Hex-Pro / Advance Termite Bait System (Whitmire Micro-Gen) - diflubenzuron
- Trelona (BASF) - novaluron
- Recruit IV / FirstLine (BASF) - diflubenzuron
Advantages:
- Lower chemical load than liquid (small bait quantity vs. 50-200 gallons of diluted liquid)
- Can be added to occupied homes without significant disruption
- Suitable for properties with wells, sensitive ecosystems
- Documented colony elimination (not just zone treatment)
Disadvantages:
- Slower initial knockdown - colony elimination over months
- Active monitoring required (ongoing service contract)
- More expensive over multi-year periods
- Less effective when other food sources compete
Localized / spot treatments
For specific drywood termite infestations or limited subterranean activity:

Localized treatment is appropriate when:
- Drywood termite swarm in a specific wall or piece of furniture

- Customer wants minimum-disruption approach
It is NOT a substitute for full treatment when termites are colonizing the structure broadly.

When quoting termite treatment:
