Spider Recurrence After Treatment Decision Tree
Why this matters
A customer who called for spider treatment and called back 21 days later is not telling the technician the spray failed. They are telling the technician that something about the property keeps producing spiders, and the technician's job is to find what that is. Spiders are predators - they go where the food is. Treating spiders with pyrethroid spray while leaving an attractive prey base (porch lights drawing moths, mulch beds full of crickets, dust-bowl of dead insects on the basement floor) is the pest control equivalent of mopping while the faucet runs. This tree separates spider recurrence into prey-base, harborage, exclusion-failure, and species-specific cases and routes the second visit to the actual cause.
Spider biology - the diagnostic frame
Spiders eat other insects. No prey, no spiders. Spider populations track prey populations with a 2-4 week lag. A property with abundant flying insects (moths at porch lights, gnats around water features) supports orb weavers in those zones. A property with abundant crawling insects (crickets, beetles in mulch, sowbugs in basement) supports wolf spiders, cellar spiders, and funnel weavers.
Spiders generally do not group or trail. Each spider holds a territory and forages independently. This means spray that kills the visible spider does nothing to the next spider that wanders in.
Common indoor species: cellar spider (long-legged, basement/garage corners, prey on other insects in the space), house spider (Parasteatoda tepidariorum, cobweb maker, common indoor), wolf spider (large active hunter, comes inside through gaps), funnel weaver (web sheets in mulch, corners of stairs).
Medically significant: brown recluse (south-central US, very specific geographic range, dark undisturbed harborages), black widow (under decks, in garages, in clutter outdoors).
Quick checks at the callback
Open the original ticket. What product was applied where? Was the prey-base condition documented? Were exclusion items documented?
Walk the property. Look at: porch light type (incandescent draws insects, LED less so), exterior light placement (close to doors = insects gather and enter), mulch type and depth at the foundation (deep mulch = harborage), garage door bottom seal, basement window wells, crawlspace vent screens.
Look at WHERE the spiders are showing up. Spiders at corners and ceilings indoors: cellar spider or house spider, indoor prey driving population. Spiders in window wells and at the basement door: ground-foraging wolf spider entering from outside. Spiders in garage corners: usually multiple species, often a combination of exterior entry plus indoor prey.
Path 1: prey-base problem
If the property has visible insect activity (moths at porch lights, midges around water, dead flying insects accumulated on basement floor, crickets in mulch, sowbugs under landscaping rock), the spider population will rebuild as fast as the spray dissipates.
Fix order:
Address the prey. Change exterior incandescent bulbs at front and back doors to yellow LED (Cree or Philips yellow bug-light tone). Insect attraction drops significantly. Move bright security lights away from doors. Customer education item.
Treat the prey. Pyrethroid perimeter spray addresses the prey-base insects (crickets, sowbugs, gnats) as well as foraging spiders. This is the right product application, but applied with the understanding that it suppresses prey rather than spiders directly.
IGR for accumulated dust-bowl prey indoors: vacuum and dispose of dead insect accumulation on the basement floor. This is a sanitation step that pays back in spider population reduction.
Path 2: harborage problem
Garage corners full of clutter, basement with piles of cardboard boxes, deep mulch beds at the foundation, woodpile against the house: every harborage supports a spider.
Fix order:
Customer-side. The customer is the only person who can clean the basement or garage clutter. The technician documents the harborage observations on the inspection report and recommends action.
Mulch depth and ground-contact wood. Mulch deeper than 2-3 inches at the foundation is harborage. Recommend reducing depth or pulling mulch back 6 inches from the foundation. Woodpiles against the house should be moved 10+ feet away.
Treat the harborage. Pyrethroid spray (bifenthrin Talstar Pro or lambda-cyhalothrin Demand CS) at all harborages: garage corners, behind exterior trash cans, in mulch beds at the foundation, under decks, in window wells. Multi-position treatment around the property creates a reduced-harborage zone.
Path 3: exclusion failure
If the spider sightings are in entry zones (basement window wells, around garage doors, at door thresholds), spiders are entering from outside through gaps.
Fix order:
Garage door bottom seal. A 1/4 inch gap = unlimited wolf spider entry. Replace with a thicker rubber seal (Universal Garage Door Bottom Seal, or a brush seal for heavy use).
Basement window well covers. Open window wells fill with leaves, debris, and ground-active spiders. Polycarbonate well covers (Maccourt or similar) seal them.
Crawlspace vent screening. Original 1/4 inch mesh allows spider entry; replace with 1/8 inch hardware cloth or use closed crawl vents with proper moisture management.
Door sweeps. Front and back exterior doors with worn weatherstrip. Install new door sweep (door sweep with brush or rubber gasket) plus weatherstrip.
Foundation slab penetrations. Plumbing, electrical, and HVAC penetrations at the foundation should be sealed with urethane foam (Great Stuff Pestblock) and finished with hydraulic cement or sealant.
Path 4: species-specific problem
Brown recluse (south-central US): treatment is more aggressive. Dust application (Tempo dust, deltamethrin) into wall voids, behind baseboards, in attic insulation. Glue boards for monitoring and population suppression. Customer education on clutter reduction (recluse loves dark undisturbed harborages: stored boxes, shoes left in dark closets, attic stored items). Treatment is multi-visit on a 30-day schedule.
Black widow: harborage-driven. Web inspection of garages, under deck rim joists, in crawlspaces. Treat individual webs and egg sacs with contact spray. Reduce harborage clutter. Customer warned about glove-and-light protocol when accessing webby areas.
Path 5: customer perception problem
