Why this matters

Rodent device placement fails when it is placed where the rodent was seen instead of where it travels. Rodents follow established runways along edges, and three physical signs tell you where those runways are: rub marks (the grease-and-dirt smear from fur on a repeatedly used path), gnaw marks (where they chew an entry or a hard surface), and tracks (footprints and tail drags in dust or on a tracking patch). Each sign answers a different question. Rub marks trace the regular travel route, gnaw marks locate entry points and access into food or void, and tracks confirm current activity and direction. Reading which sign tells you what is the difference between traps on the runway (catches) and traps in the open (ignored).

Symptom presentation

On inspection you find dark greasy smears along baseboards, pipe penetrations, and joist edges; chewed corners on doors, packaging, wire insulation, or entry gaps; and footprint or tail-drag patterns in dust, flour spills, or on a placed tracking patch. The customer rarely notices any of these; they report droppings or a sighting. The value you add is reading the trail signs to map the runway and the entries, because that is where devices go. Rats produce heavier, more obvious rub marks than mice because of their size and oilier fur; mouse signs are fainter and require a flashlight at a low angle.

Quick checks

Read each sign for what it uniquely tells you:

  • Rub marks: dark, greasy smears at fur height along edges, around pipe and beam penetrations, and at the top and bottom of squeeze-through gaps. They mark a repeatedly used route. Fresh marks smear when touched; old marks are dry and hard.
  • Gnaw marks: chewed edges, enlarged holes, and tooth grooves on wood, plastic, packaging, or soft metal. They locate entries and access points into food and voids. Fresh gnawing is light-colored and rough; old gnawing is darkened and smooth.
  • Tracks: footprints and tail drags in dust or on a tracking patch (a thin talc or non-toxic dust line). They confirm current activity, direction of travel, and species by print size.
  • Cross-check freshness on all three so you place against the active path, not an abandoned one.

Branch on what you need to know, and read the sign that answers it.

  1. You need to find where to place traps and stations (the travel route): read rub marks. They trace the runway the rodent uses every night. Place snap traps perpendicular to the runway with the trigger toward the rub mark, or stations directly on the run. A trap off the runway, even a few inches, is far less productive.
  2. You need to find and seal entries: read gnaw marks. They locate where rodents enter the structure or access food and voids. Each gnaw point at an entry is an exclusion target; seal with rodent-proof material after confirming the population is being controlled.
  3. You need to confirm the runway is active right now: read tracks. Lay a tracking patch across a suspected rub-marked run and read prints in 24 to 72 hours. Fresh prints confirm an active route and tell you direction; no prints suggest an abandoned or wrong path.
  4. Signs conflict (rub marks present but no fresh tracks): the runway may be historical. Re-confirm with a tracking patch before committing device labor, and look for a newer parallel route.
  5. Species in question: print size on the tracking patch and rub-mark heaviness separate mouse from rat, which changes device size and placement height (roof rats run overhead, Norway rats and mice run at grade).

Confirming diagnosis

Confirm the active path with a tracking patch placed across the rub-marked runway: fresh footprints and tail drags within 72 hours prove the route is in use and show direction. Confirm entries with the gnaw marks plus a light test (light visible through the gap from inside). Pair fresh rub marks plus fresh tracks plus a located gnaw entry, and you have the complete map: route, activity, and door. Devices placed against that map catch; devices placed against a sighting do not.

Remediation

Place traps and stations on the confirmed active runway (read from rub marks, verified by tracks), perpendicular to travel with proper trigger orientation, against the wall edge where rodents run. Seal the gnaw-located entries with rodent-proof material once the population is controlled (sealing first can trap rodents inside). Remove harborage along the run. Document the runway, entries, and device locations so a follow-up reads the same map instead of starting over.
