Perimeter vs Crack-and-Crevice vs Broadcast Application Decision Matrix
Why this matters
The same pesticide product can be applied as a perimeter band, as a precise crack-and-crevice injection, or as a broadcast surface coverage, and the choice is not preference: it is dictated by the target pest's biology, the use site, and the legal limits printed on the label. Choosing broadcast where the label only permits spot or crack-and-crevice indoors is a federal violation that also wastes product and exposes occupants. Choosing crack-and-crevice for a perimeter-foraging ant whose colony lives in the lawn wastes the visit. This matrix routes the method by pest behavior, treatment zone (interior versus exterior), label permissions, and the IPM goal of placing the minimum effective amount exactly where the pest contacts it. It exists so a technician decides the method deliberately, with the label open, rather than defaulting to last visit's spray pattern.
The three methods defined
Perimeter (exterior band) application: a treated band around the structure's foundation, typically a few feet up the wall and a few feet out onto the adjacent soil or hardscape per the label, intercepting pests as they approach or attempt entry. It is an exterior, structure-focused barrier or transfer zone, not an indoor method.
Crack-and-crevice application: precise placement of small amounts of material directly into cracks, crevices, voids, and harborage openings where pests live and travel, using a crack-and-crevice tip, bait, dust, or foam. The product goes into the gap, not onto the open surface. This is the cornerstone indoor IPM method because it puts active where the pest is and keeps it off occupant-contact surfaces.
Broadcast (surface) application: relatively uniform coverage over a broad surface area, such as a lawn, a turf area, or a large outdoor expanse. Indoors, broad surface spraying is heavily restricted or prohibited by most modern labels; broadcast is primarily an outdoor turf and landscape method for soil-dwelling and lawn pests.
When perimeter wins
Perimeter is the method when the target is an exterior-originating pest that approaches the structure to enter or forage: occasional invaders (millipedes, sowbugs, ground beetles, springtails), exterior-foraging ants whose colony is outdoors, spiders working the foundation, and overwintering pests staging on the exterior. The colony or population lives outside; the goal is to intercept at the building envelope.
Perimeter shines because it treats the approach corridor without putting product indoors, fits routine quarterly residential service, and pairs with non-repellent chemistry for transfer to outdoor colonies. The label governs how high up the wall and how far onto adjacent surfaces you may treat, and impervious-surface runoff restrictions under recent label changes limit broadcasting onto driveways and walks. Perimeter is the wrong choice when the pest is already breeding indoors (a wall-void colony, a German cockroach population, bed bugs): a band outside does nothing for an interior resident population.
When crack-and-crevice wins
Crack-and-crevice is the method when the pest lives and breeds inside the structure in defined harborage: German cockroaches in kitchen and bath voids, ants nesting in wall voids, stored-product pests in pantry seams, and any indoor target where precision placement reaches the harborage. It is also the default indoor method whenever a label restricts indoor use to crack-and-crevice or spot treatment, which most modern indoor labels do.
Crack-and-crevice wins because it delivers active exactly where the pest contacts it, uses the least material, keeps product off occupant surfaces (counters, floors, toys), and satisfies the IPM and label mandate for targeted indoor placement. It pairs naturally with baits, dusts, and foams for void work. It is the wrong choice when the target is a soil or turf pest, or an exterior-foraging population whose source is outdoors, because injecting voids does nothing for a lawn-based colony.
When broadcast wins
Broadcast is the method for outdoor turf and soil pests distributed across an area: lawn-infesting ants (with a nest network in turf), fleas and ticks in yard habitat, fire ants across a broad turf area, mole crickets, and chinch bugs. The pest is spread over ground, so coverage must be spread to match.
Broadcast wins outdoors because the target population is areal, not a point source, and only uniform coverage contacts a distributed pest. It is paired with granular formulations and irrigation-in instructions per the label for soil pests. Broadcast is almost never correct indoors: most labels prohibit broad indoor surface spraying, and doing it needlessly coats occupant surfaces and violates the use-site terms. Reserve broadcast for the outdoor areal targets the label explicitly permits.
Field decision flow
Start with where the pest lives, not where the customer sees it. If the breeding source is inside the structure in defined harborage, the answer is crack-and-crevice plus baits and voids; do not band the exterior and call it done. If the source is the exterior and the pest is entering or foraging at the envelope, the answer is perimeter, governed by label height, distance, and impervious-surface limits. If the source is the lawn or soil and the pest is spread across turf, the answer is broadcast with the labeled granular or liquid for that area. Then open the label and confirm the method is permitted for that exact use site: many products that allow perimeter exterior use restrict indoor use to crack-and-crevice or spot only, and broadcast indoors is the exception, not the rule. When two methods both apply (a German roach problem with exterior support, a perimeter ant with an indoor satellite), layer them by zone: crack-and-crevice and bait indoors, perimeter outdoors, never broadcast indoors. The minimum effective placement that the label permits is always the right answer.
The product label is federal law under FIFRA. Application method, use site, rate, and indoor-versus-outdoor restrictions printed on the label are enforceable; applying broadcast where the label permits only crack-and-crevice or spot, or treating a use site the label does not list, is a violation regardless of intent. Recent label revisions added impervious-surface and runoff restrictions on exterior applications to protect water.
