Mosquito Program Design + Operations

Purpose

Define the residential mosquito control program. Demand is large + seasonal - per residential property per season + per follow-up visit (typically monthly April - October). Mosquito services drove the fastest-growth segment in pest control 2018 - 2024. Done well, they're sticky + high-margin. Done sloppily, the customer's neighbors complain about drift + the customer cancels.

Scope

Applies to:

  • Residential yard mosquito programs (barrier treatment + larvicide)
  • Pre-event mosquito treatment (parties, weddings)
  • Mosquito surveillance + identification
  • Customer education on personal protection

Excludes: municipal vector control (specialty contractor work + state-licensed); commercial property programs (similar process but separate scope); standing-water source elimination on adjacent properties.

Responsibilities

  • Technician runs barrier + larvicide treatments + customer-side inspection
  • Operations schedules monthly visits across the customer base
  • Customer must address adjacent standing water + landscape practices that promote breeding

Mosquito biology basics

Most residential pest mosquitoes are Aedes (especially Aedes albopictus = Asian tiger mosquito) or Culex.

  • Eggs laid on or near water-holding containers
  • Larvae develop in 5 - 14 days depending on temperature
  • Adults live 2 - 4 weeks; female bites for protein to develop eggs
  • Adults disperse 100 - 400 yards from breeding site
  • Daytime feeders: Aedes (most aggressive biters in residential yards)
  • Dusk + dawn feeders: Culex (also primary West Nile vector)

Program design

Step 1: Initial assessment

Walk the entire property + identify:

  • Standing water (gutters, planters, dog bowls, kid toys, bird baths, drain pans, tarps, low spots)
  • Tree holes + bromeliads + plant axils (bamboo, banana, large hostas)
  • French drains, downspout extensions
  • Shaded resting habitats (dense shrubs, ivy, unmowed grass)
  • Adjacent property risks (neighbor pool, drainage swale)

Document with photo. Customer cannot fix what they don't know about.

Step 2: Source elimination (customer + technician)

  1. Customer responsible: dump standing water in containers, clean gutters, fix yard drainage
  2. Technician treats sources that cannot be eliminated:
  • Bromeliads + plant axils: water-soluble methoprene (IGR) or Bti
  • Catch basins, drains, low spots that hold water: Mosquito Dunks (Bti) or methoprene briquets
  • Ornamental ponds: Bti or fountain pump (moving water doesn't breed)

Step 3: Larvicide application (program backbone)

  • Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis): biological, OMRI-listed, very specific to mosquito larvae + black fly. Safe for pets, birds, fish, beneficial insects.
  • Methoprene: insect growth regulator; prevents larvae becoming adults. Longer-lasting; less specific but still very low non-target impact.
  • Apply to standing water + larvicide reservoirs

Step 4: Barrier adulticide spray

This is the visible treatment customers see + pay for.

  • Backpack mist blower with pyrethroid (bifenthrin, lambda-cyhalothrin) OR botanical (essential-oil products like Essentria IC3, EcoVia EC) for organic programs
  • Application targets resting habitats: dense vegetation, shrub interiors, fence lines, deck undersides, garage door areas, downspout splash zones
  • Application rate per product label
  • DO NOT spray flowering plants (kills bees + butterflies)
  • Spray to wet but not dripping
  • Dry time 30 - 60 minutes typical; customer + pets indoors during

Step 5: Customer education + protection

  • Personal repellent (DEET, picaridin, OLE / PMD) - pest control company sells or recommends
  • Yard practices: keep gutters clean, dump containers, manage drainage, light landscape grading
  • Mosquito-repelling landscape plants (effectiveness limited but customer-pleasing)
  • Outdoor fans for patios (mosquitoes are weak fliers; fans displace them)

Monthly visit (after initial assessment + setup)

  1. Property walk - re-inspect standing water
  2. Add Mosquito Dunks where new standing water identified
  3. Barrier spray refresh
  4. Documentation + photo

Typical visit: 30 - 50 minutes per residential property.

Pre-event

Customer hosting a wedding, party, outdoor event:

  1. Schedule treatment 24 - 48 hours BEFORE event
  2. Aggressive barrier spray of all event areas (yard, patio, walks, parking)
  3. Larvicide every container + drain
  4. Recommend outdoor fans + zone-control fogger for evening
  5. Customer warned: not 100% protection; combine with personal repellent for guests

Disease vector + public health

Some areas + situations escalate beyond standard residential program:

  • West Nile (Culex), Eastern Equine Encephalitis (Culiseta), Zika (Aedes), Chikungunya (Aedes), Dengue (Aedes)
  • Vector-positive surveillance from public health department
  • Routes serving high-risk customers (immunocompromised, infants, elderly) - emphasize prevention

In any vector-positive announcement, communicate to customers + step up program intensity.

NEVER fog or spray adulticide during the day when bees + pollinators are active. Bifenthrin + lambda-cyhalothrin are HIGHLY toxic to bees. Time barrier sprays for early morning (before bee flight) or late evening (after bee flight returned to hive). Avoid flowering vegetation entirely. State pesticide enforcement audits + neighbor complaints over bee kills are a serious threat to the business. Customer education on this is also retention insurance.

Insurance + license

  • State pesticide applicator license required for adulticides
  • General liability covering vector control work
  • Bee-kill exclusion language reviewed with insurer; not all policies cover this
