FMC Talstar Pro Mosquito Barrier Mix and Application Spec

Why this matters

Mosquito barrier programs are a high-margin add-on for residential PMP routes, but the gap between a 28-day knockdown and a 10-day complaint call is almost always a mix or application error, not the product. FMC Talstar Pro (bifenthrin 7.9 percent) is the most-used SPC bifenthrin formulation in the US barrier market, and its label permits a wide concentration range. Senior techs need a defensible spec for residential lot sizes, equipment selection, and mix concentration so the route is consistent across techs and the callback rate stays under 5 percent. This document is the standard your training and your QA audits should reference.

The SC formulation is essential. Older WP and EC bifenthrins separate, foul nozzles, and burn ornamentals. Do not substitute Bifen IT, Bifen XTS, or other re-labeled bifenthrins without re-reading the rate table; concentrations differ.

Mix concentrations by target

The Talstar Pro label provides a range. Pick from this internal table and document on the work order.

  • Standard mosquito barrier (adulticide, residential turf and shrub): 0.5 fl oz Talstar Pro per gallon water (roughly 0.02 percent finished)
  • Heavy pressure mosquito barrier (waterfront, wooded lots, May to August in the Southeast): 1.0 fl oz per gallon (roughly 0.04 percent)
  • General perimeter pest band (in combination service): 0.5 to 1.0 fl oz per gallon
  • Tick barrier with mosquito service: 1.0 fl oz per gallon, focus 3 ft up the woodline edge

Maximum bifenthrin AI per acre per year is 0.4 lb (label), which equates to roughly 80 fl oz Talstar Pro per acre annually. On a typical quarter-acre residential lot you are nowhere near the cap; on HOA common areas track cumulative use.

Equipment selection

The barrier outcome is decided by droplet size more than by AI rate.

  • Standard residential service: backpack mist blower (Stihl SR 450, Solo 451, or Birchmeier Eldorado). Output 100 to 200 micron VMD droplets that adhere to leaf undersides where resting adults sit.
  • Large lots (over 0.5 acre): truck-mounted skid sprayer with a JD9-C gun, hollow-cone disc 1.5 or 2.0, 150 to 250 psi. Adjust gun for fan pattern not stream.
  • ULV cold foggers (London Fog, Curtis Dyna-Fog): permitted but lower residual; reserve for pre-event same-day knockdown, not barrier service.

Avoid airless paint sprayers and standard pump-up B and G sprayers for barrier work. Droplet too big, residue uneven, leaf coverage poor.

Application protocol

Treat the perimeter of the maintained yard plus the resting habitat where adult mosquitoes hide during daylight.

  1. Walk the property first. Tip standing water, document conditions in the service ticket, dose any unrecoverable water with VectoBac WDG (Bti) or methoprene briquets.
  2. Brief the customer on re-entry, post the EPA-required notification sign if state law requires (FL, NY, CT, MA).
  3. Treat undersides of shrub and tree leaves up to 10 ft, focus shaded north and east sides of structures.
  4. Treat tall grass and groundcover along property lines, fence rows, and woodline edges.
  5. Treat exterior structure walls up to 3 ft, foundation band, and the underside of decks where airflow is dead.
  6. Do not treat open lawn surfaces, flowering ornamentals during peak pollinator hours, water features, or vegetable gardens.
  7. Document gallons applied, lot size, and weather (temp, wind, precip forecast). Talstar Pro label prohibits application when wind exceeds 10 mph.

A typical quarter-acre residential lot consumes 1.5 to 3 gallons of finished spray. If you applied less, you under-treated the resting habitat.

Pollinator protection

The Talstar Pro label and EPA bee advisory box prohibit application:

  • To blooming crops or weeds when bees are foraging (sunrise to roughly 2 hours before sunset for honeybees)
  • Within 24 hours of forecasted rain that could move residue to flowering plants
  • Direct contact spray on visible bees, including bumblebees and solitary natives

Plan service for early morning before pollinator activity, or late evening after foraging ends. Skip flowering azalea, holly, clover patches, and any tree in bloom. If the customer has a beehive, follow EPA Bee Advisory and a state-specific apiary registry check (e.g., FDACS apiary inspection rule 5B-54).

Mix procedure to avoid nozzle plugging

The SC formulation will settle in a closed tank within 24 hours. Mix every tank.

  1. Fill tank one-third with clean water
  2. Shake Talstar Pro jug for 10 seconds
  3. Measure with a graduated cylinder, not a cap
  4. Add to partially filled tank with agitator on
  5. Top off with water, continue agitation 60 seconds
  6. Use within 24 hours; bifenthrin SC stable, but tank-mix biological additives (Bti, IGR) are not

If your back-pack mist blower nozzle clogs mid-route, the SC has settled. Pull strainers, flush with clean water, restart the mix.

Documentation that holds up in a complaint

Every barrier service ticket should record: EPA Reg No applied, total finished gallons, ounces of concentrate, lot size, equipment, weather, applicator license number, and a sketch or photo of treated areas. State pesticide enforcement (FL DACS, NY DEC, CA DPR, TX SPCS) routinely audit barrier accounts after pollinator-kill complaints. The Manuall service template should pre-fill these fields.
