Fixed Rodent Entry Now Noise from Different Void: Second-Fault Masking Decision Tree
Why this matters
You sealed the obvious entry on the last visit. The customer signed off, the trap line stopped catching, the attic ran quiet for a week. Today they call back: noise is back, but from a different void. The bedroom wall, not the attic. The basement rim, not the kitchen toe-kick. The garage soffit, not the gable vent.
This is the classic second-fault masking pattern in rodent work. The first repair was real. It closed a real entry and cut off a real signal. The second fault was always there, sharing the property with the first, and the first fault was loud enough to mask it. Now that the loud one is gone, the customer hears what was always there.
The risk of misreading this is two-sided. Call it a new infestation and you charge for a service the original exclusion arguably should have prevented. Call it a missed entry on the original work and you give away a re-trip on what is genuinely a separate event. The tree below sorts which is which.
What second-fault masking looks like in rodent work
A property with active rodents almost never has exactly one entry path, exactly one harborage, and exactly one feeding source. Mice and rats find what is available. A typical mid-aged residential property under pressure will have three to seven exploitable conditions: a primary entry the animals prefer, one or two secondary entries used less often, and several harborage and travel options inside.
When you find and seal the primary, the population does one of three things:
- Existing animals already inside shift travel routes to other voids they were using less frequently. Same population, different audible location.
- A secondary entry that was always there becomes the new primary, and the customer-side population stabilizes or grows again.
- A separate population that was sharing the property through a different entry becomes the only audible activity.
All three look the same to the customer: "We fixed it, now it is back, but in a different spot."
The decision tree
Run on first re-inspection. Stop at the first match.
Is the new noise location reachable from the originally sealed entry by a continuous void path (same stud bay, shared joist cavity, connected attic plenum)? If yes, GO TO internal-shift path. Animals already inside are using a quieter route now that the primary travel route is closed off behind sealed exclusion.
Is the new noise in a void with NO continuous internal connection to the originally sealed area (different floor, separated by a fire-stopped wall, on the opposite side of a slab break)? If yes, GO TO second-entry path. A different outdoor entry is feeding this void.
Were monitors or traps placed at the new location on the original visit? If yes, check catch and consumption. Zero activity on the original monitors plus new activity now means the second entry recently became active, possibly due to seasonal pressure (cold front, dry spell, neighbor abatement). If non-zero activity was logged on the original visit and not addressed, the original scope missed it.
Is the new void co-located with a recent change on or near the property (new neighbor exclusion, vegetation cut back, dumpster removed, construction starting next door)? If yes, GO TO pressure-shift path. The population is the same; the path of least resistance just changed.
Are droppings, smear marks, or rub trails at the new location older than the time since the original visit (yellowing droppings, dust accumulated on smears, dried gnaw edges)? If yes, this is a missed pre-existing fault. The original inspection did not cover the void.
Are the new signs all fresh (dark droppings, no dust, sharp gnaw edges)? If yes, this is post-original activity. Sort between internal shift, new entry, and pressure shift using the path you reached above.
Internal-shift path
The original exclusion closed the loudest route. The animals already inside the structure are using quieter routes. The population has not changed; the sound location has.
Action: trap aggressively inside the connected void path. Set traps on travel evidence (rub marks, droppings concentrated in runways), not where the customer hears noise. Re-inspect every connected void on the same floor and the floor above and below. Do not assume the original exclusion failed. It did not. The work to do now is interior removal, not more exclusion.
Second-entry path
A separate outdoor entry exists. The original inspection scope did not cover it, or it was a closed entry that opened (failed seal, deteriorated flashing, settling) after the original visit.
Action: full perimeter re-inspection focused on the side or elevation closest to the new audible activity. Look for the same exclusion candidates as the original: utility penetrations, foundation-to-sill gaps, roof-to-wall junctions, gable vents, dryer and bath vent covers, garage seal failures, weep holes wider than a US quarter inch. Seal the new entry. If the original scope clearly excluded the new area (different elevation, attached garage, detached structure), this is reasonably a chargeable scope expansion. If the original scope was "full perimeter exclusion" and the new entry is on the same perimeter, the conversation tilts toward a warranty re-trip.
Pressure-shift path
The animals are the same. Their access to the property changed because the property's competitive ecosystem changed. A neighbor sealed their building, vegetation was removed and harborage moved, a food source was eliminated nearby, or weather pushed pressure indoors.
Action: document the change driving the pressure shift. Re-inspect with that change in mind. The customer needs to understand that exclusion is not static; pressure changes will surface entries that were uncompetitive a month ago. This is normal IPM work, not a service failure.
Why this read matters for the next conversation
Customers in the second-fault scenario are usually frustrated and looking for someone to blame. The honest read is that the first repair worked. What is back is not the same problem. Naming the pattern clearly, on first inspection, gets the conversation onto solving the new fault rather than relitigating the old one. The tree above gives the tech the language and the evidence to make that case at the door, with the droppings and the smear marks they can show the customer, before any work begins.
