It requires regular servicing and enough device density to keep pace. It is the default interior method where bait is restricted or risky.

Baiting (rodenticide in tamper-resistant stations) drives population numbers down quickly and covers exterior and inaccessible areas. It is the right tool for exterior perimeter pressure and large exterior populations. It carries real hazards: secondary poisoning of predators and pets, primary risk to children and non-targets, and carcasses decomposing in inaccessible voids. Regulation restricts where and how it can be used, especially interior placements.

When exclusion wins

Exclusion wins as the permanent layer in every structure, and as the lead method wherever entries are findable and sealable: residences, light commercial, and any account where the customer wants the problem solved rather than managed indefinitely. It is mandatory in food facilities and child-care settings as the primary strategy because it removes the need for ongoing toxicant. The constraint is labor and access; complex older structures take real time. Exclusion always pairs with trapping to clear the rodents already inside before or as you seal.

When trapping wins

Trapping wins for interior removal in any sensitive setting: food-handling facilities (where rodenticide interior use is restricted), homes with children or pets, child-care, and healthcare. It wins when you need a confirmed catch and a recovered carcass rather than a rodent dying in a wall. It is the correct interior method under audit schemes (AIB, SQF, BRC) that mandate non-toxic interior monitoring and trapping. Trapping also wins when the population is small enough to clear with device density and servicing.

Trapping loses against a large exterior population spread over ground where you cannot place and service enough traps; that is bait-station territory.

When baiting wins

Baiting wins on the exterior perimeter and for large or inaccessible exterior populations: tamper-resistant stations around a structure's perimeter, agricultural and warehouse exteriors, and heavy exterior pressure trapping cannot keep pace with. It reduces numbers fast and covers ground trapping cannot. It is generally restricted or prohibited interior in food-handling and child-present settings, so its role there is exterior-only. Even where allowed, use only EPA-registered products in tamper-resistant stations per label, and account for carcass and secondary-poisoning risk.

Baiting loses interior in any sensitive setting, and loses whenever the carcass-in-void odor or non-target risk outweighs the speed benefit.
