Bed Bug Pyrethroid Resistance Decision Tree

Why this matters

Cimex lectularius populations across the US carry knockdown-resistance (kdr) mutations and metabolic resistance to pyrethroids at frequencies above 80 percent in field-collected strains (Romero, Potter, Haynes; J. Med. Entomol. 2010; Zhu et al. 2010). A senior tech who reaches for Suspend SC or Demand CS on a hotel-room re-infestation is throwing money at a population that will not die. The decision is not whether to switch products; it is which non-pyrethroid pathway to choose, in what sequence, with what evidence. This tree drives that call when a callback ticket lands or a 30-day follow-up shows live activity.

First-pass evidence the tech captures on site

Before choosing a chemistry, document:

  • Live count: how many adults, nymphs, and shed exoskeletons in 10 minutes of inspection
  • Stage profile: a population with mostly adults plus eggs is recently treated; nymphs of mixed stage means the population is breeding through your treatment
  • Locations: bed seams only, headboard, baseboard, wall voids, electrical outlets, adjacent units
  • Prior product use: ask the customer or read your own service history. If pyrethroid SC was used in the last 90 days and activity persists, treat as resistant.
  • Trap data: ClimbUp interceptor counts if deployed at the prior service

If prior treatment was pyrethroid only and live activity persists at 14 days, stop using pyrethroids as the primary AI. Move to the branch logic below.

Branch 1: confirmed pyrethroid resistance, single dwelling, no immunocompromised occupant

Recommended chemistry stack:

  • Neonicotinoid plus pyrethroid combo: Temprid SC (imidacloprid 21 percent plus beta-cyfluthrin 10.5 percent) at the higher label rate (8 ml per gallon for bed bugs)
  • Plus desiccant: CimeXa (silica gel) dusted into wall voids, outlets, bed frame voids, behind headboard mounts
  • Plus mechanical: mattress and box-spring encasement (Protect-A-Bed Allerzip or equivalent) installed and not removed for 18 months
  • Plus heat: spot-heat the bed frame, headboard, and night stands to 122 F core for 90 minutes using ZappBug or equivalent if available

The Temprid SC label (EPA Reg No. 432-1483) explicitly permits a 28-day retreat interval. CimeXa dust does not degrade and stays active in voids until removed.

Branch 2: multifamily, multiple adjacent units active, no heat budget

Heat is not feasible at scale without rental. Build a chemical-plus-monitoring protocol:

  • Bedlam Plus (sumithrin plus MGK 264 plus imidacloprid) on mattress seams, label-permitted contact use
  • Transport (acetamiprid 8.5 percent plus bifenthrin 11.8 percent) on baseboard, wall-floor junction, void edges
  • CimeXa silica into electrical boxes (power off first), wall voids, and under baseboards
  • Two-week follow-up with ClimbUp interceptors at all bed legs, document counts

Treat adjacent units (above, below, left, right) at the same visit. Cimex traffic via wall-plate gaps is the most common re-infestation vector in multifamily.

Branch 3: heat-resistant or vulnerable occupant restriction

If the occupant is immunocompromised, an infant, or a daycare, restrict to:

  • Vacuum and steam (Vapamore MR-100 or equivalent, 240 F at the nozzle)
  • CimeXa dust into voids only, surfaces wiped clean
  • Encasements
  • Mattress and bedding hot-wash 130 F, dry on high 30 minutes
  • Active monitoring with ClimbUp at all bed legs

No spray AI of any kind. Document the restriction reason in the service ticket.

Branch 4: hospitality account, occupied room, immediate vacate not permitted

The Marriott / Hilton bed-bug SOPs require:

  • Same-day inspection by a licensed PMP
  • Room placed out of order minimum 24 hours
  • Heat treatment to 135 F structural minimum for 4 hours, with thermocouples logged
  • Post-heat residual: Crossfire (clothianidin 4.6 percent plus metofluthrin 0.6 percent plus piperonyl butoxide 26 percent), labeled for bed bugs and effective on pyrethroid-resistant strains per Lockwood et al. 2017
  • 14-day and 30-day re-inspection with photo documentation

Crossfire (EPA Reg No. 1021-2569-67437) was specifically registered with non-pyrethroid efficacy data. It is the right last-line residual when pyrethroids fail.

What you do not do

  • Do not stack a second pyrethroid (Demand on top of Suspend, Bifen on top of Talstar). Both hit the same target site.
  • Do not dilute Temprid SC below the bed-bug-specific rate (8 ml per gallon). The lower 4 ml general-pest rate fails on bed bugs.
  • Do not skip the encasement. Without it, every retreat is fighting the same eggs hidden in mattress seams.
  • Do not promise a one-visit fix. Two visits at 14-day spacing is the minimum, three is typical, multifamily can take six.

Documentation that protects the account

Per service, log:

  • EPA Reg No of every product applied
  • Mix concentration and total volume
  • Locations and surface count treated
  • Interceptor or trap counts
  • Occupant briefing acknowledgement (preparation sheet signed)
  • Photos of evidence at first visit, photos of absence at follow-up

The Manuall service ticket template should mandate these fields for any bed-bug job. The data is your defense in a property-manager lawsuit or a state DACS investigation.

Do not apply any liquid pesticide to a mattress surface that is not labeled for direct mattress application. The Temprid SC label restricts mattress application to seams and tufts; Bedlam Plus is one of the few products labeled for direct mattress surface use. Misapplication is a FIFRA violation and a documented occupant-exposure liability in personal-injury suits. Read the label every time.
