Bed Bug Heat Treatment
Why this matters
Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are insecticide-resistant + behaviorally elusive. Conventional chemical treatments require 3 - 5 visits over 6 - 12 weeks with high failure rate (40 - 60%). Heat treatment achieves complete kill in a single 6 - 10 hour treatment when done correctly. Service rates. Heat is the higher-margin + higher-success approach + customers who research will ask for it.
Heat-kill science
Bed bugs die at sustained temperatures:
- Adults + nymphs: 113°F / 45°C for 90 minutes OR 119°F / 48°C for 20 minutes
- Eggs: 122°F / 50°C for 90 minutes (the most heat-tolerant stage)
The treatment target: maintain 130 - 135°F (54 - 57°C) at the COLDEST point in the treated space for 90 - 120 minutes. The coldest point matters - overshoot air temperature happens easily; coldest-point lag is the gap that kills the protocol.
Equipment
Heaters
- Propane (direct-fired or indirect-fired): high BTU output, fast ramp, outdoor venting
- Electric (heat-treat dedicated units like Thermal Remediation, ThermaPureHeat): 240V dedicated circuits or generator power, no combustion in treated space
- Hybrid trailer-based systems
Fans
- Critical for thermal uniformity
- High-CFM circulation fans (5 - 10 per 1,500 sq ft house)
- Without fans, hot air stratifies + cold spots survive
Sensors
- Wireless temperature sensors placed at cold points BEFORE treatment
- Minimum 6 - 12 sensors per home; one per room + furniture-buried + closet floors
- Wireless to central monitor (Goji, Vaillancourt, ThermaSenseR)
Power
- Electric units require 50 - 100A typically per house
- Most residential service insufficient - bring generators OR plan for utility coordination
Pre-treatment customer prep (extensive)
Customer prep matters more than the treatment itself. Provide written + verbal instructions 7 - 10 days before:

- Aerosol cans (deodorant, hair spray, paint, cleaners) - explosion risk above 130°F
- Pressurized containers
- Wax candles + crayons - melt at 130°F + ruin furniture
- Vinyl records, photo negatives, magnetic tapes - heat damage
- Medications + supplements
- House plants
- Pets + fish tanks
- Wine, oils, liquor - heat damages
- Antique musical instruments, fine art
- Anything explicitly listed by customer
Items that STAY (treated in place)
- Furniture, mattresses, clothing on bed
- Books + paper (heat-tolerant)
- Most electronics (most rated to 140°F+ short-term)
- Mounted artwork
- Carpet, drapes, blinds
Customer + pets
- Vacate during treatment + cool-down (10 - 14 hours total)
- Pets out
- Aquariums covered + monitored OR removed
Treatment day procedure
Pre-arrival
- Verify customer completed prep - walk-through
- Photograph rooms BEFORE
- Document any pre-existing damage
- Customer signs liability release acknowledging heat-sensitive items left in space
Setup (90 - 120 minutes)
- Position heaters per square footage (typically 1 unit per 500 - 1,000 sq ft)
- Place fans for circulation; aim air flow toward potential cold spots (under furniture, inside closets, behind dressers)
- Open furniture: dresser drawers pulled out, closet doors open, mattress + box spring slightly opened, clothes hangers spaced
- Place 6 - 12 sensors at coldest expected points
- Vent or cover smoke detectors as needed
- Confirm power load
Heat ramp + soak (4 - 6 hours)
- Start heaters
- Monitor sensors continuously
- Target: 130 - 135°F at every sensor for 90+ minutes
- Walk the home every 30 minutes to verify fan placement + sensor function
- Adjust fans + heater positions if a sensor is lagging
Soak hold (90 - 120 minutes after coldest sensor reaches target)
- Maintain temperature
- NO sensor should drop below target during the hold
Cool-down + walk-through (60 - 90 minutes)
- Heaters off; fans continue
- Open windows once interior is below 100°F
- Inspect for visible bed bug kill (typically bugs flushed onto surfaces)
- Vacuum visible carcasses (HEPA vac)
- Final temperature log to customer
Post-treatment
- Customer returns to cooled-down home
- Mattress + box spring encasements installed (sealed for 12 months) to trap any survivors + monitor
- Monitoring with active monitors (Climbup interceptor traps under bed legs)
- 30-day follow-up inspection - if zero captures, success
- 60-day follow-up - final confirmation
Combined chemical (belt + suspenders)
Many heat treatments include light residual chemistry at perimeter as insurance:
- Diatomaceous earth around bed legs + room perimeter
- Light pyrethroid or pyrethrin perimeter dust
- Insect growth regulator wall void treatment
This catches bugs introduced post-treatment OR survivors that escaped via plumbing chases.
The single most common heat-treatment failure is COLD SPOTS at the back of dresser drawers + inside closet shoe-piles + under tightly-packed clothing. Bed bugs migrate AWAY from heat (positive thermotaxis is real, but extreme heat reverses it). Some bugs will burrow deeper into protected pockets where 130°F doesn't reach. The fix: PRE-TREATMENT prep separating + spreading dense storage, MULTIPLE sensors at every protected location, + fans aimed into closets + drawer interiors. Cold spots = survivors = retreatment = lost margin.
