Bayer Temprid FX Vs Suspend PolyZone Rotation Decision

Why this matters

Temprid FX (now branded under Envu after the Bayer pest-control divestiture) and Suspend PolyZone are the two products most general-pest crews reach for on exterior perimeter and broad-spectrum interior accounts. They are not interchangeable. Temprid FX is a dual-active suspoemulsion pairing imidacloprid (neonicotinoid, IRAC Group 4A) with beta-cyfluthrin (pyrethroid, IRAC Group 3A). Suspend PolyZone is a single-active polymer-encapsulated deltamethrin (Group 3A) suspended concentrate. Rotating between them only buys you resistance management if you actually move off the shared Group 3A pyrethroid chemistry. Pick wrong and you build pyrethroid resistance in your worst accounts while believing you rotated. Pick the residual wrong and you burn through extra service visits on a porous substrate. This article fixes the decision on label-rate fact and IRAC mode-of-action logic, not habit.

Both products are FIFRA-registered restricted-use-eligible in some states and carry enforceable labels. The label is the law (FIFRA Section 12(a)(2)(G)). Apply only to listed sites, at listed rates, with listed PPE. Beta-cyfluthrin and deltamethrin are highly toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates and to bees; do not allow runoff to storm drains or water, and do not apply to blooming vegetation when pollinators are active. Imidacloprid carries pollinator-protection language. Verify your state's current registration and use-restriction status before service.

The options

Temprid FX: imidacloprid + beta-cyfluthrin. Label perimeter dilution commonly 8 mL per gallon (general/maintenance) up to 16 mL per gallon for heavier listed pests; the dual active means a single product covers both a contact-active pyrethroid knockdown and a slower systemic-class neonic action against listed insects. Useful where you want one product to span ants, occasional invaders, and some hard-to-kill listed pests. Imidacloprid resistance in some German cockroach and certain fly populations is documented, so the neonic half is not a universal fix.

Suspend PolyZone: deltamethrin in a polymer matrix. Label dilution commonly 0.25 to 1.0 fl oz per gallon depending on target and surface. The PolyZone polymer is the differentiator: it locks the active into a film that resists rain wash-off and UV and abrasion on porous exterior substrates (concrete block, weathered siding, mulch-adjacent foundation). Long residual on the surfaces that normally chew through a bare SC. Single active, Group 3A only.

When Temprid wins

Choose Temprid FX when the account needs genuine broad-spectrum coverage across listed pests where the neonic adds a mode of action the pyrethroid alone misses, and when the population has no known imidacloprid resistance. It is the stronger pick for mixed ant-plus-occasional-invader exteriors, for listed pests where Suspend's single active underperforms, and as the resistance-rotation partner against a pure pyrethroid program because it brings IRAC 4A to the rotation. Confirm target pests are on the Temprid label before substituting it for a single-active product.

When Suspend PolyZone wins

Choose Suspend PolyZone when residual longevity on a punishing exterior substrate is the limiting factor, not spectrum. PolyZone's wash-off and UV resistance keeps deltamethrin working on rained-on, sun-baked, porous foundations far longer than a bare suspoemulsion, which directly cuts callbacks on quarterly perimeter routes. It is also the cleaner choice where the account or jurisdiction restricts neonicotinoids (some municipal pollinator ordinances and certain HOA/spec requirements exclude imidacloprid), since Suspend carries no neonic. Single-active simplicity also lowers mixing-error risk for newer technicians.

When neither rotation actually rotates

The trap: alternating Temprid FX and Suspend PolyZone is NOT a true IRAC rotation for the pyrethroid-susceptible portion of the target population, because both contain a Group 3A pyrethroid (beta-cyfluthrin and deltamethrin respectively). If your problem pest is resistant to pyrethroids, swapping these two leaves the pyrethroid pressure unchanged and only Temprid's imidacloprid half differs. For real resistance management against a confirmed pyrethroid-resistant population, rotate to a different IRAC group entirely: a Group 4A or 4C product, a Group 7 IGR added to the program, a non-pyrethroid bait (Group varies by active), or a Group 22A indoxacarb formulation where labeled. Use Temprid-vs-Suspend rotation for residual and spectrum variety, not as your sole anti-resistance strategy.

Field decision flow

  1. Identify the target pests and confirm they appear on the label of the product you intend to use. If a key pest is Temprid-only or Suspend-only, the label decides for you.
  2. Check for a known resistance history at this account or in this pest population. If pyrethroid resistance is suspected, neither product alone solves it: add a different IRAC group (IGR, bait, or Group 4-only product) rather than alternating these two.
  3. Assess the exterior substrate and weather exposure. Porous, rain-exposed, UV-heavy foundations favor Suspend PolyZone for residual. Mixed-pest exteriors with no neonic restriction favor Temprid FX for spectrum plus a second mode of action.
  4. Check jurisdictional and account restrictions. Neonicotinoid ordinances or pollinator-protection requirements rule out imidacloprid, pushing the choice to Suspend.
  5. Set the dilution at the labeled rate for the confirmed target and surface. Do not default to the maximum rate; use the listed maintenance rate unless the target pest's label entry specifies higher.
  6. Document the IRAC group used each visit so the rotation log shows actual mode-of-action movement, not just a brand swap. Plan the next visit's product to change IRAC group when resistance pressure is the concern.
