Bait vs Spray vs Fog Decision Matrix

Why this matters

Bait, spray, and fog (ULV space treatment) are three fundamentally different formulation strategies for the same problem, and a technician who defaults to one for every job is leaving 30-40% of treatments under-effective or over-applying chemistry. Bait works on social or trail-following insects that share the active ingredient peer-to-peer. Spray works on contact kill and residual barrier. Fog works on flying or aerosolizable insects in a defined airspace. Using bait for flying mosquitoes is wrong; using spray inside a cockroach harborage is counter-productive (causes bait aversion); using fog for bedbugs is theatrical without being effective. This matrix routes the formulation choice to the pest biology and the structural context.

The three approaches defined

Bait: a formulation (gel, granule, paste, liquid) containing a slow-acting active ingredient mixed with a phagostimulant (food attractant). The target insect consumes the bait and either dies or returns to the harborage to be groomed/fed-upon by other members, propagating the AI through the population. Slow by design (24-72 hour kill time typical) so the carrier insect survives long enough to share. Examples: indoxacarb gel for cockroaches, fipronil granular for ants, sulfluramid for fire ants, bromethalin block for rodents.

Spray (liquid residual): a formulation (suspension concentrate, microencapsulated, wettable powder) applied to surfaces at label rate to create a residual barrier or to contact-kill exposed insects. Fast contact kill plus 30-90 day residual depending on substrate and AI. Examples: bifenthrin SC for ant and roach perimeter, lambda-cyhalothrin for general pest perimeter, fipronil for non-repellent ant treatment.

Fog (ULV or thermal): a formulation aerosolized into an airspace to contact-kill flying or active insects in suspension or on exposed surfaces. Minimal residual. Examples: pyrethrin space spray for restaurant flying insect treatment, deltamethrin ULV mosquito barrier, water-based aerosol for stored product moth.

Decision drivers

Pest is social or trail-following (ant, cockroach, termite): bait is the primary strategy. Spray can be used as exclusion but never inside the bait zone.

Pest is solitary, fast, or contact-driven (spider, centipede, scorpion, occasional invader): spray is the primary strategy. Bait has no mechanism because there is no peer-to-peer sharing.

Pest is flying and active in defined airspace (mosquito in yard, fly in restaurant, flying insect in greenhouse): fog or barrier spray. Bait works only for specific flying-bait targets (housefly QuikStrike, fruit fly with vinegar trap).

Pest is hidden in inaccessible voids (subterranean termite, drywood termite, carpenter ant interior nest): liquid drench, bait station, or fumigation depending on access. Surface fog never reaches the target.

Bait selection by target

German cockroach: gel bait (Advion, Maxforce FC Magnum, Avert). Multiple pea-sized placements in harborage. Rotate AI on a 6-month cycle.

Argentine ant or odorous house ant: gel bait (Optigard Ant Gel, Advion Ant Gel) or liquid (Gourmet Liquid Ant Bait, Advance liquid). Place at trail points and at moist harborage zones. Pyrethroid spray destroys ant colonies in fragments and worsens the problem - non-repellent or bait only inside.

Carpenter ant: liquid bait (Advance Carpenter Ant Bait, Maxforce Carpenter Ant Bait) or non-repellent spray (Termidor SC, Taurus SC) at the parent colony entry. Indoor liquid bait + outdoor non-repellent spray is the IPM combination.

Subterranean termite: bait stations (Sentricon, Trelona ATBB) or liquid soil treatment (Termidor SC, Premise 75) - the bait-vs-liquid debate is its own decision tree and addressed separately.

Fire ant: granular bait (Extinguish Plus, Amdro Pro, Award Fire Ant Bait) broadcast over treatment area. Spread on a dry day, walk away. Fastest population-level result with the smallest amount of chemistry on the ground.

Rodent: bromethalin or bromadiolone block bait in tamper-resistant stations per FIFRA 24c requirements and most state pesticide regulations. Snap or glue trap supplements where bait is contraindicated (food facility, child or pet access).

Spray selection by target

Spider: pyrethroid (bifenthrin Talstar Pro, lambda-cyhalothrin Demand CS) at corners, behind furniture, garage doors, basement perimeters. Spray treats foraging adults but does not address the food source - reduce insect prey to reduce spider population.

Wasp and hornet: contact aerosol (Wasp Freeze, jet spray with quick-knockdown pyrethrin) at the nest with proper PPE. Residual treatment of nesting void with dust (deltamethrin Delta Dust or Tempo dust).

Scorpion: lambda-cyhalothrin (Demand CS) plus fluorescent UV inspection at night to confirm population. Heavy perimeter application around foundation and around exterior light sources.

Centipede, millipede, sowbug, occasional invader: bifenthrin or lambda-cyhalothrin perimeter and crack-and-crevice. Moisture remediation is the actual fix.

Fog selection by target

Restaurant flying insect (housefly, fruit fly, drain fly): ULV nighttime fog with pyrethrin in occupied space (after hours, before opening, customer cleared per label). Combined with drain treatment for drain fly and sanitation for fruit fly.

Mosquito barrier: backpack-mister fog with bifenthrin (Talstar Pro at label barrier rate) or pyrethrin ULV on a schedule. Misting systems with permethrin are an alternative for high-value residential. Larvicide (Bti, methoprene) at water sources is the IPM partner.

Stored product moth and beetle in a warehouse: pheromone monitoring plus IGR aerosol (Gentrol Aerosol) plus sanitation. Fog is supplement, not primary; the actual fix is finding and removing the infested product.

Bedbug: not a fog target. Fog does not penetrate harborages, does not survive long enough to kill, and creates a false sense of completion. Bedbug is heat or targeted insecticide work, never fog. Customers asking for "fog the bedrooms" are educating opportunities, not service opportunities.

When to combine

Cockroach IPM in a kitchen: bait inside (gel) + non-repellent spray exterior perimeter (fipronil or bifenthrin) + IGR (Gentrol). Three formulations, three roles, one IPM job.

Ant IPM around a foundation: bait at trail points (gel or liquid) + non-repellent spray on exterior soil at slab and at foundation (Termidor SC) + granular bait in mulch beds for fire ant or pavement ant. Mixed.

Mosquito service: barrier spray on vegetation + larvicide in standing water + ULV space treatment for an event-day knockdown. Three roles.

When chemistry is not the answer
