High-Security Cylinder Selection Medeco Mul-T-Lock ASSA

Why this matters

A high-security cylinder serves three jobs: resist forced entry (pick, drill, bump), control unauthorized key duplication, and provide an audit trail when keys are reissued. The three platforms that dominate North American high-security commercial work - Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and ASSA - solve the problems differently. The locksmith who specs the cylinder family without understanding the key-control architecture and the rekey logistics commits the customer to a 10-year contract that may not fit their access model. This article gives the platform tradeoffs that drive the spec.

What "high security" actually means

Two listings define the bar:

  • UL 437 - Standard for Key Locks. Tests pick resistance (10 minutes minimum) and drill resistance (5 minutes minimum) for high-security listings. Most professional-grade cylinders carry UL 437.
  • ANSI / BHMA A156.30 - Specifications for High-Security Cylinders. Grades 1 and 2 high-security classifications include attack resistance and key-control criteria.

A cylinder marketed as "high security" without UL 437 and BHMA A156.30 listings is marketing copy, not a high-security product. Verify the markings before specifying.

Medeco - rotating-pin platform

Medeco cylinders use rotating bottom pins that must reach the correct elevation and rotation simultaneously to align the shear line. The key bitting carries both vertical depth and angular orientation; angular cuts are made by a Medeco-specific cutting machine. Strengths: patent-protected blanks under dealer-only distribution, ARX hardened pins resisting drilling, sidebar plus rotating pin geometry resisting picking and bumping, mature in commercial K-12, healthcare, multi-family, and government accounts. Constraints: key duplication requires a factory-authorized dealer with a signature card from the customer of record; restricted blank lead times are real on large rekeys.

Mul-T-Lock - telescoping-pin (pin-in-pin) platform

Mul-T-Lock cylinders use pin-in-pin construction: each pin chamber contains an outer pin with an inner pin nested inside. The key has dimples on both sides that must reach two correct elevations per chamber. Strengths: high theoretical key space supporting large master-keyed systems without code overlap, hardened steel inserts resisting drilling, patent-protected blanks (Interactive+, MT5+, Classic Pro), modular design where the same key blade serves cylinders, padlocks, cam locks, and electronic add-ons across a facility. Constraints: dimple cutting requires Mul-T-Lock-specific equipment; master keying logic differs from traditional pin-tumbler practice and requires platform-specific training.

ASSA - sidebar plus angled-pin platform

ASSA (ASSA Abloy Twin) uses angled key cuts combined with a sidebar that must align before the plug rotates. The Twin family stacks two sets of pin chambers - primary tumblers and a sidebar - that must both align. Strengths: Twin and Twin Exclusive publish strong pick / bump resistance in independent testing; patent-protected blanks under restricted geographic distribution; common platform in Scandinavian, European, and North American commercial work; aggressive drill protection. Constraints: geographic distribution can affect availability outside major metros; specialty key-cutting equipment required.

Side-by-side comparison

The platforms are functionally equivalent at the security level for typical commercial work. The differentiator is usually local dealer support, the customer's existing keyway commitment, and the master-keying complexity. All three carry comparable UL 437 pick and drill resistance, comparable BHMA A156.30 ratings, and comparable patent-protected restricted-blank programs. Medeco and Mul-T-Lock have the widest US dealer cutting-equipment base; ASSA is leaner but established in major metros.

Key control architecture

All three platforms support restricted-key programs where blanks are sold only to the authorized dealer under contract, signature cards gate every cut, an audit log tracks every key issued, and an end-of-program rekey follows signatory departure. This is the actual security feature for most customers. The lock cylinder resists physical attack for minutes; the key control program prevents unauthorized duplication for years. Spec'ing the cylinder without spec'ing the restricted-key contract leaves the customer with a high-security lock and a hardware-store-duplicatable key.

Patent timeline matters

Each platform has versioned generations as patents expire. Medeco's original Biaxial patent expired; the current generation is M3 and X-CORE. Mul-T-Lock's Classic and Interactive patents expired; the current generation is Interactive+ and MT5+. ASSA's earlier Twin patents expired; the current generation is Twin Exclusive and Twin Maximum. When a customer's installed platform has reached patent expiration, aftermarket blanks become available and the key-control program is no longer patent-enforceable. Migration to the current-generation platform restores key control - a real conversation, not a planned-obsolescence gambit.

Retrofit and hardware compatibility

Most high-security cylinders are designed as drop-in replacements for standard ANSI A156.5 mortise cylinders, A156.13 commercial mortise locks, A156.2 cylindrical locks, and small-format and large-format interchangeable core housings. Verify three things at spec time: cylinder length matches the door thickness and lock case; cam or tailpiece matches the lock case; and the existing strike and hardware grade match the new cylinder's expected installation. A Grade 1 cylinder in a Grade 3 lockset is wasted spend.

When high security is the wrong answer

  1. Single-family residential where no master-key system exists and the customer will not maintain a restricted-key program. A BHMA Grade 1 conventional cylinder delivers most of the security without the long-term key-control overhead.
  2. High-turnover environments (short-term rentals, dorm-style housing) where rekey frequency makes restricted blanks a procurement burden.
  3. Customers unwilling to sign the dealer agreement that gates blank distribution.

A high-security cylinder installation is not finished until the customer's named signatory has signed the dealer agreement and the key-issue log is established. Selling cylinders without setting up the key-control protocol gives the customer half a security system - the half that does not actually prevent unauthorized duplication.
