Door Sag or Frame vs Lock: Which Causes Bolt Misalignment Decision Tree
Why this matters
When a deadbolt or latch will not seat cleanly into the strike, the temptation is to blame the lock and replace it. Most of the time the lock is innocent. The door has sagged, the frame has shifted, or the strike was never positioned right, and the bolt is hitting metal it should be clearing. Swapping a healthy cylinder onto a misaligned door produces the same complaint and a callback. Diagnosing whether the misalignment lives in the door, the frame, the hinges, or genuinely in the lock keeps you from selling hardware that fixes nothing and points you at the real adjustment.
Symptom presentation
Bolt misalignment shows up as:
- Bolt or latch hits the strike face and will not enter, or enters only with a lift or shove of the door.
- Key throws hard or stops because the bolt is dragging the strike lip.
- Door must be pulled or lifted to lock, then springs back when released.
- A bright wear line or gouge on the strike or the bolt face.
- The complaint is recent and tied to weather, settling, or a slammed door.
Quick checks
- Open the door and throw the bolt into air. Smooth and full travel means the cylinder and bolt are healthy and the problem is purely positional.
- Mark the bolt face with a marker or lipstick, throw it gently against the closed strike, and read the witness mark. Where it lands tells you which way to move.
- Watch the gap (reveal) around the door. A widening gap at the top of the latch side and a tight gap at the bottom is the signature of hinge sag.
- Grab the knob and lift. If the bolt suddenly aligns when you lift the door, the door has dropped on its hinges.
- Check the hinge screws. Loose or stripped top-hinge screws let the door swing down on the latch side.
- Measure the reveal at the top, middle, and bottom of the latch edge with a tape or a coin. A consistent gap (commonly an eighth of an inch on an interior door) is healthy. A gap that narrows from top to bottom by more than a sixteenth of an inch is measurable sag and confirms the latch edge has dropped. Quantifying the reveal turns "it looks off" into a number you can act on and recheck after the fix.
Isolation tree
Branch 1, witness mark high on the strike, reveal tight at top. The door has sagged: the latch edge dropped. Causes: loose or stripped top hinge screws, worn hinge pins, a heavy door on undersized hinges. Confirm by lifting the door and watching the bolt align. Fix at the hinge, not the strike.
Branch 2, witness mark low on the strike, reveal tight at bottom. The door rose or the bottom hinge pulled out, less common. Reseat the bottom hinge or shim the top.
Branch 3, witness mark toward the stop or away from the stop (bolt too far in or out horizontally). The frame or strike position is the issue, or the door is not closing to a consistent stop. The frame may have racked from settling. Adjust or relocate the strike, or shim the frame.
Branch 4, bolt binds only in certain weather. Wood swelling or thermal frame movement. Seasonal. Relieve the strike mouth for clearance and address weatherstripping or sealing.
Branch 5, bolt smooth open, misaligned closed, hinges tight, reveal even. The strike was simply mounted off, or the door prep and frame prep do not register. Reposition the strike to the bolt's true path.
Branch 6, bolt itself sluggish even in air. Now the lock is implicated: a tired bolt spring, a bent bolt, or a worn deadbolt mechanism. Service or replace the lock, then recheck alignment.
A point on deadbolt throw depth that catches techs out: a residential deadbolt should project a full inch into the strike and frame when fully thrown. If the door has sagged enough that the bolt only catches the strike lip, the customer may report the door as locked when the bolt is barely engaged, a security problem masquerading as an alignment nuisance. Confirm the bolt throws its full design projection into a clean strike pocket after any alignment correction, not just that it turns.
Confirming diagnosis
The defining test is the door-open throw. A bolt that extends fully and smoothly into air has a healthy lock; everything else is door, frame, hinge, or strike. From there, the witness mark plus the reveal pattern point to the specific cause: high mark with top-tight reveal equals hinge sag; horizontal offset equals strike or frame; seasonal equals swelling. Prove the cause before you drill or replace anything.
Remediation
- Hinge sag: replace top-hinge screws with longer screws into the stud, tighten all hinges, replace worn pins, or add a hinge for a heavy door.
- Frame or strike offset: relocate the strike to the bolt path, enlarge or file the strike opening, shim the frame square.
- Seasonal swelling: relieve the strike, improve sealing, or plane the binding edge.
- Genuine lock fault: replace the bolt spring or the lock and reverify alignment.
Recheck the door-closed throw with the customer's key after every adjustment.
