Why this matters

BHMA / ANSI grade designations on door hardware tell the customer how many cycles, how much torque, and how much abuse the product is built to absorb. Grade 1 is commercial-heavy-duty; Grade 2 is light-commercial / heavy-residential; Grade 3 is residential. A Grade 3 deadbolt on a commercial entry fails in 18 months; a Grade 1 deadbolt on a residential door is unnecessary spending. This article gives the grade definitions per BHMA A156 series, the test categories that drive the grading, and the application matrix that pairs the right grade to the right opening.

BHMA / ANSI A156 series

BHMA (Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association) develops the ANSI A156 series of door hardware standards. Each part covers a specific product family:

What gets tested

A typical lock-set grading test covers:

  1. Operational cycles - how many open / close / lock / unlock cycles the product survives before failure. Grade 1 cylindrical lockset (A156.2): 800,000 cycles. Grade 2: 400,000. Grade 3: 200,000.
  2. Strength - lateral force the lock can resist on the latch or bolt. Grade 1 deadbolt (A156.36): 1,000 lbf bolt strength. Grade 2: 800 lbf. Grade 3: 650 lbf.

The cycle count is the operational deliverable a facility manager cares about: a Grade 1 lockset at 800,000 cycles handles a busy office entry through a 25-year service life; Grade 3 at 200,000 cycles is sized for a residential door at a few cycles per day.

Cylinder grade vs. lock-set grade

A lock-set carries a grade for the body and trim, and the cylinder carries a separate grade per A156.5. The grades do not have to match - a Grade 1 lock body can carry a Grade 1 standard cylinder or a Grade 1 high-security cylinder (A156.30) depending on the security model. Three combinations to know:

  1. Grade 1 lock + Grade 1 standard cylinder - commercial baseline.
  2. Grade 1 lock + Grade 1 high-security cylinder (A156.30) - commercial with key control and elevated attack resistance.

A high-security cylinder in a Grade 3 lock body is wasted - the lock body fails before the cylinder is challenged.

Reading the markings

BHMA-certified product carries markings indicating:

  1. The applicable A156 standard part (e.g., "A156.2").
  2. The grade designation (e.g., "Grade 1").
  3. The manufacturer name and model.
  4. Finish designation per BHMA A156.18 (e.g., 626 for satin chrome).

A "Grade 1" claim without the BHMA mark is marketing, not certification. Verify the certification before specifying for commercial work.

ADA accessibility considerations

ANSI A117.1 (Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities, referenced by the IBC) sets accessibility requirements that interact with hardware:

  1. Door operating force - no more than 5 lbf for interior doors (a higher force may apply for fire-rated and exterior doors per code).
  2. Door hardware operable without tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist - lever handles, push / pull plates, or accessible knobs.
  3. Mounting height - door hardware between 34 and 48 inches above the finished floor.

Lever handles dominate commercial work because they satisfy the no-tight-grasping requirement. Knobs are typically restricted to back-of-house and residential applications.

Hinge selection - A156.20

Hinges are graded per A156.7 (Template Hinges for Doors), with grades tied to door weight class and frequency of operation. A heavy commercial door with high traffic needs hinges sized to the cycle count and weight; under-sized hinges sag, the door drops, and the lock alignment fails. Three hinges per door is the commercial standard for doors over 80 inches tall.

Cost vs. grade conversation

Customers often ask why the Grade 1 lock is more than the Grade 3 equivalent. The honest answer:

  1. The Grade 1 case is built from heavier material with tighter tolerances.
  2. The Grade 1 components (springs, levers, cams) are sized for the higher cycle count.
  3. The Grade 1 finish withstands more aggressive cleaning and weathering per A156.18.

Over a 25-year service life on a busy commercial door, the difference is paid back several times over by avoided replacement. The lifecycle math favors Grade 1 anywhere the cycle count justifies it.

When grade is wrong on the survey

A common survey finding: existing Grade 3 hardware on a commercial entry that is failing. The recommendation is upgrade to Grade 1 with documented justification. The customer's facility manager defends the budget on the cycle-count math, not on the locksmith's preference.
