Why this matters

Narrow stairs are one of the most common causes of mid-job price disputes and injury incidents in residential and storage-facility cleanouts. When a pre-quoted job assumes normal truck-to-door access but the actual path runs through a stairwell under 36 inches wide, the original scope breaks down. Recognizing this early determines whether the job proceeds at quoted price, requires a scope conversation, or needs a different access route entirely.

Identifying a narrow-stair condition

Before any item moves, walk the full path from the item location to the truck. Flag the stairwell if any of the following are true:

  • Width between handrails or walls is under 36 inches
  • There is a landing with a 90-degree turn
  • Ceiling above the stair drops below 7 feet at any point
  • The stair surface is open-tread (gaps between treads create footing risk with large items)

Measure width at the narrowest point. A stairwell that reads 34 inches at the top riser but 29 inches at a landing turn is constrained by the turn, not the top measurement.

Branch 1: Items fit if repositioned

Items that are flat, flexible, or can be tilted vertically often clear stairwells narrower than their footprint suggests.

Test each bulky item before committing:

  • Carry vertically: a 48-inch-wide bookcase may carry through a 32-inch stair on its side if it is under 32 inches deep
  • Carry at an angle: sofas and mattresses often pivot diagonally through a 90-degree landing
  • Assess corner clearance: the critical constraint at a landing turn is the diagonal of the item, not its longest dimension

If repositioning works, proceed. Use two people minimum on anything over 75 lbs. Assign one person to guide from the bottom and one to control weight from above. Keep the item moving steadily - stopping mid-stair with a heavy load shifts the center of gravity unexpectedly.

Grip protection: gloves are required on all carry work. Items with metal corners, glass panels, or exposed hardware can cut unprotected hands on tight maneuvers.

Branch 2: Items require disassembly

Large items that cannot be repositioned to fit - sectional frames, metal shelving units, bed frames with headboard and rail combined, washer-dryer pedestals welded to the unit - need to be broken down before the stair carry.

Before quoting or committing to disassembly:

  1. Identify whether the item can actually be disassembled. Flat-pack furniture with cam locks comes apart. Solid-welded metal shelving does not.
  2. Estimate time. A queen bed frame with four bolts takes 10 minutes. A floor-to-ceiling metal shelving system takes 30-45 minutes per unit.
  3. Communicate scope change if the original quote assumed standard removal. Disassembly time and any tool use is additional labor unless the quote explicitly included it.

Carry pieces down in order: heaviest structural pieces first, smaller pieces last. This avoids stacking lightweight debris on top of items that still need to come down.

Branch 3: Items cannot move through the stair at all

Some items are structurally unable to pass a narrow stair under any configuration:

  • Riding lawn equipment
  • Full-size appliances (upright refrigerators, chest freezers, full laundry units) in stairwells under 30 inches
  • Pool tables or billiard slates (slate must be disassembled by a specialist; do not attempt solo)
  • Safes over a certain weight class on open-tread or aged wooden stairs

When an item cannot be moved through the stair safely, the alternatives are:

  • Window removal: customer authorizes temporary window removal by a qualified person so the item can be lowered by strap from the exterior. Requires customer sign-off and is typically billed separately.
  • Exterior door access: if a bulkhead, exterior hatch, or basement walk-out door exists, assess that route first before proposing window removal.
  • Item abandonment: if no safe route exists, the item stays. Document this in writing on the job record and have the customer acknowledge before leaving. Do not attempt unsafe carries under pressure.

Stair load capacity

Residential stairs in structures built before 1980 may not be engineered for repeated heavy load passes. Signs of concern: flex or bounce underfoot, audible creak or pop on a single step, visible crack at a stringer. If stairs feel compromised, stop and consult the customer. Proceeding with heavy loads on structurally suspect stairs is a liability event.

Pricing implications

If the pre-quoted price assumed standard flat-floor or normal-stair access:

  • Narrow stair with repositioning only: typically absorbs into job if time adds under 20 minutes
  • Disassembly required: scope conversation before work proceeds; document agreement
  • Alternate access route (window, exterior door): quote as separate line item before work begins

Never adjust the final price silently. State the change, explain the reason, and record the customer's agreement before adding to the invoice.
