Item-by-Item Pricing Model

Why this matters

The item-by-item pricing model is the alternative to truckload pricing. It works well for specific applications: single-item pickups, mattress disposal, appliance removal, e-waste, and other specialized items. A contractor who can quote both ways (truckload AND item-by-item) captures customers in both situations.

When item-by-item makes sense

Single item

  • Customer wants only one item removed
  • Truckload pricing is overkill
  • Specific pricing per item

Specific items with disposal costs

  • Mattresses (some areas)
  • Refrigerators (refrigerant recovery)
  • TVs / electronics (e-waste)
  • Tires
  • Each has specific disposal fee
  • Item-by-item pricing reflects

Customer with mixed items

  • Some single special items
  • Some general junk
  • Combination pricing

Per-item add-ons

  • Customer paying for truckload
  • Plus extra for special items

Specific items considerations

Mattresses

  • Many states have mandatory mattress recycling (CA, CT, RI; spreading)
  • Specific facility required
  • Fee passed to customer
  • Or contractor absorbs (charges similar to other items)

Refrigerators / freezers

  • Contain refrigerant (R-22, R-134a, R-410A)
  • EPA requires refrigerant recovery (Section 608)
  • Specific facility / refrigerant recovery
  • Fee passed to customer

Electronics

  • E-waste regulations vary by state
  • Many states require specific recycling
  • Some materials prohibited from landfill
  • Fee varies

Tires

  • Cannot go to standard landfill
  • Tire recycling facility
  • Per-tire fee

Hazardous materials

  • Paint, chemicals, batteries
  • Specific facility required
  • Often refused by junk removal companies
  • Customer's responsibility typically

Large items needing disassembly

  • Hot tub requires disassembly
  • Pool table requires partial disassembly
  • Significant labor; higher price

Customer's understanding

For each customer:

Explain pricing model

  • "We typically price by truckload"
  • "Specific items have extra disposal fees"
  • "Total cost calculated together"

Quote upfront

  • Walk through items
  • Calculate
  • Provide total

Avoid surprise

  • Customer agrees to total before pickup
  • No surprise charges

Bundled pricing

Some companies bundle:

  • Single mattress only: a modest cost
  • Mattress + bed frame: a moderate cost
  • Whole bedroom (mattress + frame + dresser): a significant bundle price

This simplifies the customer's decision.

Item categories

Standard general

  • Furniture, boxes, miscellaneous
  • Truckload pricing applies

Appliances (with refrigerant)

  • Refrigerators, freezers, AC units
  • Refrigerant recovery fee

Electronics

  • TVs, computers, monitors
  • E-waste fee

Construction debris

  • Drywall, lumber, concrete
  • Per-yard pricing

Yard waste

  • Branches, leaves
  • Per-yard pricing

Specialty (hazmat, etc.)

  • Often refused
  • Customer responsibility

Service options beyond removal

Donation pickup

  • Items go to donation center
  • May be free or reduced cost
  • Customer feels good about disposal

Recycling

  • Specific items go to recycling
  • May be free for some items
  • Specific facility

Demolition

  • Larger jobs include demolition
  • Hot tub disassembly
  • Shed removal
  • Pricing significantly higher

Common pricing mistakes

Quoting truckload for single item

  • Customer pays for capacity they don't use
  • Customer dissatisfied

Item-by-item for full house

  • Adds up to more than truckload
  • Customer dissatisfied with total

Forgetting specific item fees

  • Truckload pricing without refrigerant fee
  • Loss on the job

Inconsistent pricing

  • Same item priced differently for different customers
  • Trust erodes

No itemization

  • Customer doesn't understand what's being charged
  • Disputes

Specific scenarios

Customer with single mattress

  • Item-by-item: a modest cost
  • Quick visit

Customer with whole-room furniture

  • Truckload pricing
  • Plus mattress fee if applicable

Customer with garage cleanout

  • Truckload pricing
  • Plus appliance fees for any appliances

Customer with construction debris from remodel

  • Per-yard pricing
  • Plus standard pickup fee

NEVER accept hazardous materials (paint, chemicals, batteries) on a standard junk removal route without specific authorization and equipment. These materials require specific handling and disposal; refusing standard disposal may result in regulatory penalties for the contractor. Politely decline; refer the customer to the local hazardous waste facility.
