Interior Carry-Out vs. Window vs. Exterior Door: Access Route Decision Tree
Why this matters
A wrong route decision on a large or awkward item does more damage in thirty seconds than the removal itself. A piano dragged through a doorway that is two inches too narrow takes out both door casings; a treadmill walked through a finished hallway to avoid a short carry leaves scuff trails on freshly painted walls; a safe tilted wrong on a staircase can injure the crew or crack the stair tread. The access route decision is a pre-lift commitment: once the item is in motion, course corrections are expensive and sometimes impossible. A five-minute measurement and routing conversation before any item moves prevents the majority of avoidable property damage claims in residential and small-commercial junk removal.
Measure before committing
The minimum measurements to take before committing to a route:
- Door opening width (frame to frame, not casing to casing) and clear height.
- Door swing clearance: does the door swing into the path of travel? Can it be removed from its hinges in under two minutes?
- Hallway width at its narrowest point, including any light switch plates or handrails that reduce clear width.
- Stairwell width, tread depth, and the height of the soffit or ceiling above the landing - this last one catches crews who can get the item to the landing but cannot angle it upward past the ceiling.
- Item dimensions: width, depth, height, and diagonal dimension. For sofas, sectionals, and mattresses, note whether the piece is flexible enough to flex around a turn.
A rule of thumb: for rigid items, you need at least three inches of clearance beyond the item's largest cross-section on every axis of the carry path. Less than three inches means the route is not confirmed; it means you need to measure every restriction individually before committing.
The route decision tree
Branch 1 - standard interior carry-out
Use this route when: door opening width exceeds the item's largest cross-section by at least three inches, the hallway and any turns are clear, stairs (if present) have adequate tread depth and soffit clearance, and finished surfaces along the route are protectable with moving pads and corner guards.
Protect the route before the lift: lay a runner on finished wood or tile floors along the carry path, apply corner guards to every door casing and wall corner the item will pass within arm's reach of. Protect the floor at the exit threshold; the exterior step-down is a common drop point.
Branch 2 - interior carry blocked: try the exterior door first
Before going to a window, evaluate every exterior door on the ground floor. Exterior doors are typically wider than interior passage doors (often 36 inches clear vs. 30 to 32 for interior), they swing outward onto a porch or landing where the crew has recovery room, and removal does not require a ladder or window disassembly.
If the item is on an upper floor, check whether a side or rear exterior door and a short staircase provides a more protected route than carrying the full length of the main interior staircase past finished railings and walls.
If the item is too large for any exterior door: move to window assessment.
Branch 3 - window removal
Window removal is warranted when: no door or staircase path offers adequate clearance, the item is on an upper floor with a window that opens to a safe lowering zone, and the window opening (once the sash and trim are removed) will clear the item's diagonal dimension with working room.
Window removal is overkill when: the item can fit through a door opening if a door is removed from its hinges (a two-minute operation with standard tools that avoids any structural opening); or when the window opens to a second-story drop without a safe lowering rig.
Before removing a window sash or frame, document the window condition with dated photos on the job record. Note any pre-existing cracks in the glass or frame, failed seals on IGU panes, and paint condition. This documentation is the baseline for any post-job dispute about damage.
Remove the sash only, not the frame, unless the frame itself is the clearance restriction. A sash-only removal is reversible in under ten minutes and leaves the structural opening intact. Frame removal requires that you understand the window type (wood double-hung, vinyl replacement, aluminum slider) and have the correct hardware to reinstall. If in doubt, stop and consult with the customer before removing frame material.
Use a mechanical advantage rig (furniture straps over a door jamb or beam, or a rated lifting strap from a ground-level anchor) when lowering items through upper-floor windows. Never hand-lower a heavy rigid item from an upper-floor window with crew grip alone.
Documentation steps before any frame or sash is removed
- Photograph the window from inside and outside, capturing the full frame, sash condition, and glass.
- Confirm with the customer in writing (a signed job note or a text reply) that window removal is authorized and that reinstallation to original condition is included in the scope.
- Note the window brand and model if visible on the frame hardware - this informs reinstallation and any parts sourcing if a hardware piece is damaged during removal.
- After reinstallation, photograph the window again and confirm with the customer that the window operates correctly (opens, closes, locks) before leaving the site.
Floor and surface protection during the carry
Regardless of route: place moving blankets or carpet protection film on all finished floors along the carry path. Place corner protectors on every wall corner and door casing within the swing arc of the item. For items heavier than one crew member can safely hold static, use a furniture dolly or appliance dolly rated for the item's weight on flat runs; for stairs, use a stair-climbing dolly or a proper two-person strap carry with a spotter at the base.
Do not slide rigid items on hardwood, tile, or polished concrete - even with a moving blanket underneath, the item's weight concentrates at contact points and can indent or scratch the surface.
