Weatherstripping Replacement

Why this matters

Weatherstripping at doors and windows is the cheapest energy-efficiency upgrade in a home. A worn weatherstrip on a typical exterior door admits enough air through gaps to equal a 1-inch hole open continuously - draft, lost heat, lost cool, higher utility bills, comfort complaints. Replacing weatherstripping is 30 to 60 minutes per door at a modest in materials. Most customers don't think to ask; the handyman who walks through the home and identifies failed weatherstripping during another service call captures additional revenue and delivers a meaningful comfort improvement.

When to replace

Visible signs:

  • Brittle, cracked, or missing weatherstrip
  • Light visible through the closed door
  • Air movement felt around the closed door
  • Customer reports drafts
  • Door doesn't close tightly anymore (gasket compressed)

Recommended replacement interval:

  • Foam weatherstrip: 5 to 8 years
  • Vinyl weatherstrip: 10 to 15 years
  • Bronze or metal weatherstrip: 30+ years

Procedure for typical exterior door

Step 1: Identify the failing components

Walk around the door:

  • Top edge: weatherstripping
  • Vertical edges (both sides): weatherstripping
  • Bottom edge: sweep and/or threshold

Identify which components are failing.

Step 2: Choose replacement materials

For each component, select:

  • Same type as original (compatible installation)
  • Better-quality version if upgrading
  • Specific door types may need specific materials (storm door, sliding door, fire door)

Step 3: Remove old weatherstripping

For adhesive-backed:

  • Pull old strip off
  • Scrape residue with putty knife or razor blade
  • Clean surface with alcohol or denatured alcohol
  • Verify surface is smooth

For nailed:

  • Remove old nails
  • Fill any holes with wood filler if needed
  • Sand smooth

For track-in:

  • Lift weatherstrip out of track
  • Clean track

Step 4: Measure and cut

  • Measure the door edge length
  • Cut weatherstrip slightly longer (1/4 inch extra)
  • Cut clean (utility knife or sharp scissors)

Step 5: Install

For adhesive-backed:

  • Peel backing as you go
  • Press firmly against the surface
  • Don't stretch the material (causes shrinkage)

For nailed:

  • Position the strip
  • Tack lightly at corners
  • Drive nails (typically 4 to 8 inches apart)
  • Don't over-drive (compresses the material)

For track:

  • Slide into track
  • Verify it sits properly

Step 6: Door bottom (sweep or threshold)

Sweep:

  • Old sweep removal: unscrew or pull off
  • Position new sweep at door bottom
  • Mark mounting holes
  • Drill pilot holes
  • Mount with screws

Threshold:

  • More complex; involves the floor framing
  • Remove old threshold by unscrewing or prying
  • Position new threshold
  • Verify alignment with door
  • Mount per manufacturer (some screw into floor; some use adhesive)
  • Verify door clears the threshold when closing

Step 7: Test the door

  • Close the door
  • Check for drafts (hand at the edge during fan-on indoor; or light test - shine flashlight on door from outside in dark interior, look for light)
  • Adjust if needed (sometimes weatherstrip is too thick; trim)

Step 8: Verify operation

  • Door opens and closes normally
  • Latch engages
  • Lock works
  • No binding or rubbing

Common door scenarios

Standard exterior wood door

  • Weatherstripping on all 3 sides (top, both verticals)
  • Sweep at bottom
  • Threshold under door

Storm door

  • Magnetic weatherstrip around perimeter
  • Bottom sweep
  • Specific products for storm doors

Sliding glass door

  • Weatherstripping in tracks
  • More complex; sometimes specialty parts required

French doors

  • Multiple doors; each with its own weatherstripping
  • Astragal at the meeting point

Window weatherstripping

Most windows have built-in weatherstripping; replacement is sometimes possible:

  • Casement windows: tubular vinyl in track
  • Double-hung windows: pile weatherstripping in jamb track
  • Slider windows: track-based weatherstripping

Window weatherstripping replacement is more skilled; some weatherstripping is integrated and requires window-specific parts.

Common mistakes

  • Stretching weatherstrip during install: shrinks after install; gaps appear
  • Wrong type for the door: doesn't seal properly
  • Adhesive on dirty surface: doesn't bond; falls off
  • Compressed weatherstrip during install: door won't close properly
  • Not testing the door before leaving: customer discovers issues later

NEVER apply weatherstripping that compresses the door so much that the latch can't engage. The customer's door must function before, during, and after the service. If the weatherstripping prevents door operation, the door (or hardware) needs adjustment, OR thinner weatherstripping is needed.
