Tile Grout Cracks Back Only At Tub Corner Decision Tree
Why this matters
Grout that keeps cracking out of the exact corner where the tile wall meets the tub - and nowhere else in the field - is almost never a grout-quality problem. That joint is a change-of-plane between two materials that move independently (a tub that deflects when filled and a rigid tile wall), and rigid grout in a moving change-of-plane joint is wrong by code and by the trade handbook. Re-grouting it with the same hard grout guarantees the crack returns and lets water into the wall behind. This tree separates the textbook fix (replace the grout there with a flexible sealant in a proper movement joint) from the cases where the real cause is a deflecting tub, a missing backer/waterproofing, or a debonded tile.
Symptom presentation
- A clean crack reopens in the grout (or the grout crumbles out) along the tub-to-tile and wall-corner change-of-plane lines, every time it's re-grouted.
- Field grout elsewhere is fine.
- The crack opens when someone stands in or fills the tub and partly closes when empty.
- Sometimes a hollow sound or movement in the bottom course of tile, or a musty smell hinting at water behind.
Quick checks
- Identify the joint. Tub-to-tile and inside vertical corners are movement joints (changes of plane), not field joints. The TCNA handbook and ANSI A108 call for a flexible sealant there, not cement grout.
- Load the tub. Have water in the tub or step in and watch the joint. Visible opening under load confirms tub deflection driving the crack.
- Tap the lower tiles. A hollow ring at the bottom course suggests debonding from movement or a substrate issue.
- Check for water signs. Soft grout, staining, or odor means water has already gotten behind and the assembly, not just the grout, may be compromised.
Isolation tree
Step 1 - Is the cracking confined to change-of-plane joints (tub line, inside corners), with the field intact? If yes, this is the standard movement-joint failure (Step 2). If field grout is also cracking or tiles are loose, the substrate is suspect (Step 3+).
Step 2 - Movement-joint remedy (the common case). Rake out the cement grout from the tub-to-tile line and the affected corners to a clean, sound depth. Install a proper flexible movement joint: a backer rod or bond-breaker where the joint is deep, then a 100% silicone or approved sealant color-matched to the grout. This lets the tub deflect against the wall without tearing a rigid joint. Do not fill change-of-plane joints with cement grout again.
Step 3 - Tub support / deflection. If the joint opens dramatically under load, the tub may be under-supported (no mortar bed under a fiberglass/acrylic tub, or loose ledger). A tub that drops 1/8 in or more when filled overstresses even a sealant joint. Remedy: stabilize the tub - support the base with structural shimming/mortar per the tub maker, secure the flange - then redo the movement joint.
Step 4 - Substrate and waterproofing. If lower tiles are hollow, the grout was wet/soft, or there's odor, the cause runs deeper than the joint:
- No movement accommodation plus a water-sensitive substrate (green board or paper-faced drywall behind tile in a wet area) leads to swelling, debonding, and recurring cracks. Wet-area tile belongs on cement board or a waterproof membrane over a code substrate.
- If water has rotted the backer, the corner will keep failing until the wall is opened, the substrate replaced with the correct backer/membrane, and the tile reset.
Step 5 - Debonded tile. Reset any hollow/loose bottom-course tiles with the correct thinset to a sound, waterproofed substrate before doing the final movement joint; a tile that's debonded will telegraph movement into the joint no matter what you fill it with.
Confirming diagnosis
Isolated when the cracking is confined to change-of-plane joints over a sound, supported tub and intact substrate - in which case the flexible-sealant movement joint is the correct, durable fix - versus cracking accompanied by tub deflection, hollow tiles, or water damage, which points to tub support or substrate/waterproofing repair first. Confirm the fix by loading the tub after the sealant cures: a properly detailed movement joint flexes and stays watertight; if a freshly sealed joint still tears, the tub is moving too much and needs support, or the substrate behind has failed.
Remediation
- Standard fix: replace cement grout at the tub line and inside corners with a backer rod/bond-breaker and 100% silicone (or approved flexible sealant), color-matched.
- Tub deflection: support and secure the tub per the manufacturer, then redo the joint.
- Failed substrate: open the wall, install cement board or a waterproof membrane over a code substrate, reset tile, then the movement joint.
- Hollow tiles: re-set with correct thinset to sound, waterproofed substrate.
- Always maintain change-of-plane and perimeter joints as flexible movement joints going forward.
