Smoke Detector Replacement
Why this matters
Smoke detectors save lives; the NFPA's annual statistics consistently show that working smoke alarms cut the death rate from house fires by approximately 50 percent. Detectors expire after 10 years (the sensors degrade); customers often don't realize this. A handyman who can identify expired detectors during another service call, replace them efficiently, and explain the requirement to the customer captures additional revenue and provides life-safety value. The work is also straightforward; tens of millions of smoke detectors are replaced annually in the US.
When to replace
Replace smoke detectors:
- Every 10 years (sensor expiration)
- After fire damage
- When customer reports chirping or false alarms
- After flood or water damage
- When customer renovates kitchen or other smoke source nearby
- When existing detector is missing (per code, every dwelling has them)
Types of detectors

Code requirements (residential)
Per IRC R314 and most state codes:
- One smoke detector per sleeping room (each bedroom)
- One smoke detector in the hallway outside each sleeping area
- One smoke detector on each floor of the dwelling, including basement
- Interconnected (when one alarms, all alarm) - required by IRC since 2009 for new construction
- Hardwired with battery backup - required in some jurisdictions; older homes often battery-only
Verify current local code. Some jurisdictions require:
- Photoelectric in bedrooms
- Combined smoke + CO at specific locations
- Sealed 10-year battery sensors (vs replaceable battery)

Procedure for typical battery-powered replacement
Step 1: Identify the existing detector
- Note the brand, model, age (often printed on the back)
- Verify the mounting type (screws into ceiling)
- Note the alarm pattern (typical 3 short beeps for smoke; 4 for CO)
Step 2: Disconnect existing detector
- Remove from mounting base
- For battery-powered: simply unscrew or twist
- For hardwired: turn off power at the breaker first (verify dead)
Step 3: Remove the mounting base
- Unscrew the mounting base from the ceiling
- Some bases are attached with anchors; some directly to drywall
- For wired-in detectors: capping the wires before removing
Step 4: Install new mounting base
- Position the new mounting base where original was
- Verify alignment with the ceiling (level)
- Drive screws into ceiling joists if possible, or use anchors
- Connect wiring if hardwired (match color codes; black to black, white to white, ground to ground)
Step 5: Install new detector
- Install new battery (if not sealed)
- Press detector onto mounting base
- Verify firm attachment
- Test the alarm (press the test button)
Step 6: Restore power (if hardwired)
- Restore breaker
- Verify detector LED indicates power
- Test alarm
Step 7: Document
- Note date of installation
- Customer keeps record (or written reminder for 10-year replacement date)
- Walk the customer through testing procedure
Replacing a hardwired detector
For hardwired detectors:
Step 1: Disconnect power at breaker
- Verify breaker controls the detector circuit
- Lock and tag
- Verify dead with voltage tester
Step 2: Remove old detector
- Twist or unscrew from mounting base
- Disconnect harness if equipped (push button to release)
Step 3: Remove mounting base
- Unscrew from ceiling
- Note wire connections
Step 4: Install new mounting base
- Match wire connections (typically black-black, white-white, ground-ground)
- For interconnected detectors, a third "interconnect" wire (often orange or yellow)
- Verify all connections via wire nuts; tape with electrical tape
Step 5: Install new detector
- Connect harness to detector
- Press onto mounting base
- Verify attachment
Step 6: Restore power and test
Special situations
Chirping detector (low battery)
- Replace the battery
- Test the detector
- If chirping continues despite new battery, the detector is failing; replace entire detector
Detector keeps alarming for no reason
- Clean the detector (dust on sensor)
- Verify proper installation (no obstruction)
- If false alarms persist, sensor may be at end of life; replace
- Some detectors are sensitive to humidity; consider relocation if installed in bathroom area
Interconnected detector replacement (one of many)
- Replace one detector
- Verify all detectors in the interconnected network still function
- If one detector causes the network to fail, may need to replace multiple
Hardwired to a circuit that's been disconnected
- Investigate why power was disconnected
- Often customer removed an old detector that was malfunctioning
- Restore the circuit or convert to battery-only (some models support both)
Carbon monoxide detectors
CO detectors:
- Required by many state and local codes
- Often combined with smoke in modern detectors
- Sensors typically last 5 to 10 years
- Replace per manufacturer schedule
Placement:
- Each level of the home
- Near sleeping areas
- Not in the same locations as smoke detectors (kitchen, bathroom can be near smoke; CO is more general)
Common smoke detector mistakes
- Reusing expired detectors: false sense of safety
- Wrong battery: doesn't fit; or wrong voltage
- Mounting in wrong location: too close to kitchen (false alarms) or too close to bathroom (humidity)
- Wires disconnected when removing old detector: detector inoperative; not testable until power restored
- Painting over detector: blocks sensor; detector won't work
- Customer doesn't know how to test: weekly self-test not done
