Loctite PL vs Titebond vs Gorilla Glue Selection
Why this matters
Three brands cover 80% of handyman bonding decisions: Henkel Loctite PL family (construction adhesive in caulk-tube cartridges), Franklin International Titebond (PVA and aliphatic wood glues), and Gorilla Glue (polyurethane and PVA wood glues). Each is engineered for a different bond geometry, substrate set, gap-filling tolerance, and moisture-cure profile, and substituting one for another on the wrong job is the most common reason a callback shows up on day three. This article maps the three families to the actual decisions: subfloor squeak, baseboard to drywall, deck board to joist, cabinet face-frame to box, exterior trim, and the wet-substrate cases where polyurethane wins. Real ASTM ratings and OEM cure times are pulled from the published data sheets.
The three families at a glance
Loctite PL series: solvent-based or polymer-based construction adhesive in a 10-oz or 28-oz caulk tube. Bonds wood, drywall, concrete, masonry, foam board, ceramic. Gap-filling up to 3/8 inch. Tensile strength ranges from 100 to 500+ psi depending on the SKU. Cures by solvent evaporation (PL Premium uses moisture-cure polyurethane chemistry).
Titebond: aliphatic resin emulsion (yellow glue) and polyvinyl acetate (white glue) wood glues. Bonds wood-to-wood at structural strength. ANSI/HPVA Type I or Type II water-resistance ratings depending on grade. Cures by water absorption into the wood substrate.
Gorilla Glue (original): one-part moisture-cured polyurethane. Bonds wood, stone, metal, ceramic, foam. Expands 3x to 4x during cure as it reacts with substrate moisture. Tan foam squeeze-out that must be scraped after cure.
Gorilla Wood Glue: PVA wood glue, ANSI/HPVA Type II water-resistant. Direct competitor to Titebond II.
The Loctite PL lineup
PL Premium MAX (3X) Construction Adhesive: polyurethane-based, 800 psi tensile strength per Henkel published data, paintable after 24 hours, bonds wet or frozen lumber per the can. Use for subfloor-to-joist (meets APA AFG-01 and ASTM D3498), exterior trim, sill plate to foundation, deck board to joist.
PL 400 Subfloor and Deck Adhesive: VOC-compliant, 300 psi tensile, meets APA AFG-01 and ASTM D3498. The classic subfloor adhesive for stopping floor squeak in new construction. Less aggressive than PL Premium but the workhorse.
PL 200 Projects Construction Adhesive: lower-strength, paintable, interior or exterior. Picture-rail mounting, foam-board lamination, decorative paneling. Not for structural or load-bearing.
PL 8X Heavy-Duty: solvent-based, 500+ psi tensile, fast tack. Use when the substrate cannot be clamped (vertical bonds, overhead bonds).
PL 530 Foamboard Adhesive: low-solvent, will not melt EPS or XPS foam. The only PL SKU rated for direct contact with polystyrene insulation.
The Titebond lineup
Titebond Original (red label): ANSI/HPVA Type I rejected, interior use only. Set time 30-60 minutes, full cure 24 hours. Tensile bond strength on yellow pine roughly 3,600 psi per Franklin published data. The interior cabinet shop standard.
Titebond II Premium (green label): water-resistant, ANSI/HPVA Type II pass. Set 30-60 minutes, full cure 24 hours. Tensile bond strength roughly 3,750 psi. Use for exterior cabinetry, exterior trim joints with minimal weather exposure, kitchen and bath casework.
Titebond III Ultimate (blue label): waterproof, ANSI/HPVA Type I pass. Set 30-60 minutes, full cure 24 hours, longer open time (10 minutes vs 5 for Original). Tensile bond strength roughly 4,000 psi. FDA-approved for indirect food contact (cutting boards, butcher block). Use for exterior wood joints with full weather exposure, marine, food-contact projects.
Titebond Quick and Thick: high-viscosity PVA, gap-filling up to 1/16 inch. Use when joinery is sloppy and the joint will not close fully under clamp.
The Gorilla Glue lineup
Gorilla Glue (original polyurethane): one-part moisture-cured polyurethane. Clamp time 1-2 hours, full cure 24 hours. Bonds dissimilar substrates (wood to metal, wood to ceramic, wood to stone). Expands 3x-4x during cure - the gap-filling is foam, not solid resin, so the cured foam has very different mechanical properties than the cured solid in a tight joint. Mist one substrate with water before clamping; polyurethane needs moisture to cure.
Gorilla Wood Glue: PVA wood glue, ANSI/HPVA Type II water-resistant. Direct competitor to Titebond II. Set 20-30 minutes, full cure 24 hours.
Gorilla Construction Adhesive: 100% silane-modified polymer (SMP). Paintable, low odor, bonds wet substrates. Direct competitor to PL Premium.
The decision tree
Subfloor squeak from below, joist accessible: Loctite PL 400 or PL Premium MAX shot from below into the gap between subfloor and joist plus a screw from below. PL only, not wood glue - the joint is gap-filling on dimensional lumber, not a tight wood-to-wood bond.
Subfloor squeak from above, no access below: not an adhesive job. Use Squeeeeek-No-More breakaway screws (Counter Snap) through carpet, or face-screw with Senco trim screws into the joist through finished flooring. Adhesive will not reach the joint.
Baseboard to drywall: Loctite PL 200 or PL 8X in a continuous bead, plus 18-gauge brads every 16 inches. Not wood glue - the substrate is drywall paper, not wood, and PVA does not bond drywall to wood.
Cabinet face-frame to box (interior cabinet build): Titebond Original or Titebond II, with brad pins to hold. PVA is the structural adhesive here; the bond strength exceeds the wood.
Deck board to joist on a new deck: PL Premium MAX or PL 400 between joist and board, plus deck screws or hidden clips. PL only - the lumber moves seasonally and PVA is too rigid for the wet-dry cycle.
Exterior trim joinery (mitered corners, scarf joints in exposed locations): Titebond III at the joint plus mechanical fastener. Type I waterproof rating handles full weather; the Type II Titebond II will fail at exposed mitered corners over 5+ years.
Cutting board or butcher block edge glue-up: Titebond III. FDA indirect food contact approval is the only PVA wood glue in the household-name lineup with that rating.
Wood to metal, wood to ceramic, wood to stone: Gorilla Glue (polyurethane). PVA does not bond non-porous substrates; PL works but the polyurethane bonds tighter on porous-to-non-porous joints.
Wet lumber, frozen lumber, lumber that cannot be allowed to dry: PL Premium MAX or Gorilla Construction Adhesive. PVA glues require substrate moisture below 20% for full cure; polyurethane chemistries actively use water to cure.
