Interior Door Rubs Only In Humid Season Decision Tree

Why this matters

A door that drags the jamb in July but swings free in January is the second-visit callback waiting to happen. The obvious move, planing the edge until it clears, fixes the summer symptom and creates a winter gap the homeowner sees from across the room. The real question is whether the wood is moving (seasonal moisture cycling), the frame is moving (settlement, hinge migration), or the door is permanently deformed (warp, delamination). Each has a different remedial path, and only one of them tolerates planing. Misreading a swelling door as a sagging door wastes a return trip and a refinish. This tree separates moisture-cyclic rub from mechanical sag so the fix survives the next season change.

Symptom presentation

Capture six facts before touching a tool. Where the door rubs: top rail, latch-side stile, hinge-side stile, or bottom rail. When it rubs: only in summer or rainy months, only after rain events, or worsening every year regardless of season. Door type and core: hollow-core interior, solid-core, panel, or slab with veneer. Room: bathroom, kitchen, laundry, or interior dry room (humidity source matters). Whether other doors in the same hall rub at the same time (whole-house humidity versus single door). Whether the latch still catches when the door is forced past the rub.

A door that rubs the latch-side stile every August and clears in October across a whole hallway is a humidity story. A door that rubs the top corner and gets worse every single year is a sag or settlement story.

Quick checks

Read indoor relative humidity with a hygrometer. Wood movement is real at 50 percent RH and dramatic above 65 percent; an unconditioned bathroom can sit at 70 to 80 percent during shower season. Note the reading on the work order so the homeowner understands the mechanism.

Sight down both stiles for warp. A flat edge that rubs uniformly is swelling; a curved edge that touches at one point is warp.

Check the reveal (the gap between door edge and jamb) all the way around with the door nearly closed. A uniform reveal that has simply closed up points to swelling or whole-frame movement. A reveal that is tight at the top latch corner and wide at the bottom hinge corner points to hinge sag.

Press up and down on the latch edge with the door open. Movement over 1/8 inch means loose or stripped hinge screws, which mimics seasonal rub.

Tap the rub zone with a moisture meter pin probe if available. A reading 4 to 6 percentage points higher than a dry-room reference door confirms active moisture uptake.

Isolation tree

Branch A: Latch-side stile rubs, reveal uniform, multiple doors in the home affected, RH above 60 percent, moisture meter elevated. Whole-house seasonal swelling. Do not plane. Remediate the humidity (bath exhaust fan, dehumidifier, run the HVAC fan) and the doors free themselves. Planing now guarantees a winter gap.

Branch B: Single bathroom or laundry door rubs in shower season, others fine. Localized moisture. Verify the exhaust fan moves air (tissue-hold test at the grille) and is ducted to outside, not the attic. Correcting ventilation is the durable fix; minimal edge easing is acceptable only if the homeowner accepts a small off-season gap.

Branch C: Top latch corner tight, bottom hinge corner wide, worsens yearly, hinge screws loose or stripped. Hinge sag, not humidity. The door is dropping at the latch edge as the upper hinge pulls out of the jamb. Repair the upper hinge: install 3-inch screws reaching the framing, or dowel and re-drill stripped holes. This raises the latch corner and reopens the rub at the top.

Branch D: One point of the stile touches, edge visibly curved when sighted. Warp. Hollow-core doors warp from one-sided moisture exposure (bathroom side wet, hall side dry). Warp is generally not correctable; recommend a solid-core replacement for wet rooms.

Branch E: Bottom rail drags the floor or threshold, reveal otherwise uniform. Either swelling at the unsealed bottom edge (most factory doors leave the bottom raw) or settlement. Check whether the floor or threshold itself moved. If the bottom edge is raw and swollen, seal it after easing; raw end grain wicks moisture fastest.

Branch F: Door rubs and the surrounding wall shows new drywall cracks, other doors stick, floor slopes. Structural movement, not wood movement. Address the framing or foundation cause before adjusting the door; any door fix is temporary.

Confirming diagnosis

Swelling (Branches A, B, E): uniform reveal closure, elevated RH, moisture meter delta, seasonal correlation, multiple doors or a wet room.

Hinge sag (Branch C): diagonal reveal pattern (tight top-latch, wide bottom-hinge), latch-edge play under hand pressure, year-over-year progression.

Warp (Branch D): visible curve on a sighted edge, single contact point, one-sided moisture exposure.

Structural (Branch F): correlated cracks, sloping floor, multiple sticking openings on the same plane.

Remediation

For confirmed seasonal swelling, the order of preference is: control humidity, then seal raw edges, then plane only as a last resort and only the minimum needed for clearance at the worst-case season, leaving a hairline winter reveal rather than a daylight gap. When planing is unavoidable, scribe the rub line with the door closed against the jamb, remove material in light passes, then prime and paint the bare wood the same visit; unsealed planed edges swell faster than the factory finish you removed. For hinge sag, fix the hinge attachment first and recheck the reveal before deciding any edge work is needed; the sag fix often eliminates the rub entirely. Always document the humidity reading and the mechanism on the invoice so a return call in the opposite season is not logged as a defect in your work.
