Festool Domino Vs Kreg Pocket Screw Decision

Why this matters

Two joinery systems dominate handyman work: Festool Domino (loose-tenon mortise, premium tool MSRP roughly $1,200 to $1,500 for the DF 500 Q-Set) and Kreg pocket-screw jigs (small-jig MSRP under $200). They are not interchangeable. A handyman building a face frame with a Domino is using a Tesla for a UPS route; a finish carpenter assembling heirloom furniture with pocket screws is making a cabinet that will not survive the customer's grandchildren. The buy-vs-don't-buy framing below applies to a tech deciding which to add to the truck or shop next.

Symptom presentation (the customer ask)

"Build face frames for cabinet doors" - pocket screws. "Build a bookcase to match my mid-century Danish dining table" - Domino. "Repair antique dresser drawer" - Domino, or by-hand mortise-and-tenon if the original joint is visible. "Mount this floating shelf" - neither; French cleat or heavy-duty wall anchor. "Glue up this 32 inch wide tabletop from 6 inch boards" - Domino for alignment, glue alone for strength.

Quick checks

Joint stress profile. Tension across the joint (chair leg): the joint must resist pullout. Pocket screws have moderate tension resistance because threads engage end grain, the weakest grain for screw bite. Domino tenons have high tension resistance - face-grain insert in face-grain mortise, glued on four faces. Joint visibility. Pocket-screw holes are visible from the back as ovals; caps hide them but are obvious in stain-grade. Domino tenons are completely invisible. Assembly speed. Pocket screws are fastest for face-frame or cabinet-box assembly. A 32-cabinet kitchen face-frame run is hours faster with pocket screws. Wood species. End grain is hostile to pocket screws and fine for Domino mortises. Hardwood (oak, maple, cherry) is fine for both. Knotty SPF is bad for pocket screws (knots split).

Isolation tree (which to use)

Step 1: Face frames for cabinets, paint-grade or stain-grade where the pocket holes face the wall. Pocket screws. Kreg K5 or Foreman, #7 fine-thread screws for hardwood face frames, #8 coarse-thread for softwood. Glue the joint with Titebond II as well; pocket screws alone hold but glue plus screws produce a face frame that does not racks over time.

Step 2: Furniture-grade visible joinery where the joint must be invisible. Domino. DF 500 with 5mm or 6mm tenons for face frames; 8mm or 10mm for table aprons, chair rails, structural members. Festool publishes the tenon-to-board-thickness rule: tenon thickness should be roughly one-third of board thickness, never more than one-half.

Step 3: Edge-glued panels (tabletops, shelf glue-ups). Domino for alignment only. The glue line in an edge-glued panel is stronger than the wood; the Domino is acting as a clamp aid and alignment aid, not as the structural element. 6mm or 8mm tenons spaced 8 inches apart are sufficient for alignment.

Step 4: Repair of existing furniture. Inspect the original joint. If the original is a through-mortise visible from outside, repair it as a mortise-and-tenon - Domino is acceptable if the mortise can be re-cut cleanly. If the original is a doweled joint (common in 1980s-2000s mass-produced furniture), Domino is the closest modern equivalent. Pocket screws are inappropriate for any visible-surface furniture repair.

Step 5: Construction-grade work (deck framing, fence panels, shed walls). Neither. Use lag screws, structural screws (GRK RSS, Spax PowerLag), or proper structural connectors (Simpson Strong-Tie). Pocket screws and Domino tenons are not engineered fasteners.

Confirming the right tool for the job (buy-or-don't-buy framing)

The buy-vs-don't-buy threshold for a Domino set: you are doing more than one furniture-grade build per quarter, AND those builds are paid at a rate that covers shop time, AND you have the shop space and dust collection to use the tool properly. If you are running mostly service calls (drywall patches, mounted shelves, faucet swaps), the Domino sits in a case for months and does not pay back its MSRP.

The buy-vs-don't-buy threshold for a Kreg jig: any handyman doing more than one face-frame, cabinet build, or paint-grade carpentry job per year benefits. The K4 ($130 MSRP range), K5 ($175 range), or 720 Pro ($200 range) all pay back in a single small job. The Kreg Foreman ($600 range) is the production tool and only makes sense for cabinet shops or finish carpenters running many face frames.

Festool dominoes are consumables; budget for tenons by size and species. The proprietary tenon shape is patented and only Festool sells them.

Pocket-screw consumables are Kreg branded screws (or compatible third-party like Spax PSC or Powerhead) with the correct Maxi-Loc or pan head profile. Standard wood screws do not work because the head geometry must match the pocket bottom.

Remediation (when you picked wrong)

Pocket-screw joint that pulled out in tension: screw stripped or wood split. Convert to Domino if the workpiece can be salvaged. Domino joint that failed in shear: tenon undersized or glue cure rushed. Cut a larger mortise, install a thicker tenon (8mm where you used 6mm), glue with proper cure time per Titebond's chart. Face frame that racked after a year: pocket screws used without glue, or wrong screw size for species. Disassemble, re-glue, re-screw - hardwood gets fine-thread (#7), softwood gets coarse (#8). Glue line that opened on an edge-glued panel: undersized clamp pressure or boards jointed with hollow gap. Re-joint, re-glue at 125 to 175 psi for hardwood, 100 to 150 for softwood per Titebond.

Pocket-screw joints are not appropriate for safety-critical assemblies (chair legs supporting an adult, table legs supporting heavy loads, weight-bearing shelving). Pocket screws are mechanical assembly aids; in load paths where joint failure could injure the customer, use Domino, dowel, or traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery. A handyman who shipped a chair built with pocket screws inherits product-liability exposure that no joint-strength chart will excuse.
