Door Will Not Latch Strike Plate Versus Frame Versus Hinge Decision Tree

Why this matters

A door that will not latch is the most common handyman service call after drywall. The customer experiences the symptom (door does not close, door does not stay shut, door catches before fully closing) and assumes the problem is at the latch. The actual fault can be at the strike plate position, the frame condition, the hinge condition, the door condition itself, or a structural shift in the wall. Diagnosing the wrong component triggers a wasted truck roll for a follow-up. This decision tree walks a technician through field-observable evidence to isolate the cause before any screwdriver comes out.

Symptom presentation

Capture five facts. Symptom type (will not latch at all, latches sometimes, catches at top of door, catches at bottom of door, catches on side of door, rubs the floor, swings open or closed on its own). When the symptom started (recently, gradually over months, seasonally - summer versus winter). House age and recent events (recent humidity change, recent settling, recent renovation, recent slamming or impact damage). Door type (interior hollow core, interior solid core, exterior insulated metal, exterior wood, sliding pocket). Position of the strike on the latch face when door is closed.

A door that has caught at the top in summer for three years is a different repair than a door that suddenly will not latch after a heavy slam last week.

Quick checks

Close the door slowly with the latch retracted (handle held in retracted position) until the latch face contacts the strike plate. Mark the position of the latch on the strike plate with a pencil. The latch should align centered on the strike plate hole. Off-center alignment shows you which direction the strike needs to move or which direction the frame has shifted.

Inspect the strike plate condition. Is the strike plate secure (no movement when pressed)? Are the screws tight? Is the strike plate flush with the frame face or set into a mortise? Is there visible damage to the strike plate (deformed metal, worn beveled edge, missing dust box behind it)?

Inspect the hinges. With the door open, press up and down on the door at the latch edge. Significant movement at the latch edge (over 1/8 inch) indicates loose hinge screws or worn hinge knuckles. Look at the gap between the door edge and the frame on the hinge side - the gap should be uniform top to bottom. Variation indicates a hinge issue.

Check the door for warp. Sight down the latch edge from top to bottom. A straight edge indicates the door is flat; a curve or bow indicates the door is warped. Heat and humidity warping is most common on interior hollow-core doors in bathrooms and exterior doors with sun exposure.

Check the frame for square. Use a level on the hinge-side frame and on the top of the frame. Out-of-plumb hinge side or out-of-level head indicates frame settle or shift.

Isolation tree

Branch A: Latch contacts strike plate above the strike hole, frame is plumb, hinges are tight, door is flat. Strike plate position is low. Repair: enlarge the strike hole upward with a file, or remove the strike plate and re-mortise it upward. Single-visit repair.

Branch B: Latch contacts strike plate below the strike hole. Strike plate position is high, or the door has sagged at the latch edge from a hinge issue. Inspect hinges first. If hinges are tight and door is not warped, file the strike hole downward or re-mortise the strike plate. If hinge screws are loose or the upper hinge is pulling out of the frame, repair the hinge first (Branch D).

Branch C: Latch contacts strike plate too far left or right (does not align with strike hole horizontally). Frame has shifted or strike plate was mounted at wrong horizontal position. Inspect frame for plumb. If plumb, file the strike hole or re-mortise. If frame is out of plumb, the underlying cause is structural shift (settling, framing movement) and the strike repair may not hold long-term.

Branch D: Hinge screws loose, especially upper hinge pulling away from frame, door drops at latch edge. Hinge failure. Tighten existing screws first. If screws spin without grabbing, the screw holes in the frame are stripped. Repair options: install longer screws (3 inch structural screws that reach into the framing behind the jamb), drill out and dowel the existing screw holes with hardwood plugs and re-drill, or replace the hinge with a heavier-duty hinge. The 3-inch structural screw fix is the most common single-visit repair and addresses both the immediate fault and the long-term frame attachment to the structural framing.

Branch E: Door is warped (visible curve when sighting down latch edge). Door warp. Most common on interior hollow-core bathroom doors from humidity. Options: replace the door, install a flexible weatherstrip on exterior doors that can take up the warp, or accept the cosmetic issue if the latch can still function. Heat-and-humidity warp on a hollow-core door is rarely repairable; replacement is the typical recommendation.

Branch F: Frame is out of plumb or out of square, related symptoms present (cracks in drywall, sticking doors elsewhere, sloping floors). Structural shift. Reframe the door opening, or address the underlying structural cause first. Refer to a structural specialist if foundation settlement is the root cause. Patching the strike plate or hinge will produce a recurring failure.

Branch G: Door rubs floor at one corner, swings closed on its own. Out-of-plumb hinge side allowing the door to swing under gravity. Shim the bottom hinge to bring the door into plumb. Re-hang procedure if shim cannot achieve plumb.

Branch H: Door catches seasonally (winter only or summer only). Humidity expansion and contraction. Plane the catching edge minimally if the catch is consistent and the door must function year-round, but acceptable cosmetic margin should remain so the door does not show a visible gap in the off-season.

Confirming diagnosis

Branch A through C confirmation: latch position marked on strike plate with the door slowly closed at retracted latch state, alignment offset measured.

Branch D confirmation: visible movement at hinges under hand pressure, screw threads spinning when tightened, gap variation in hinge-side door margin.

Branch E confirmation: straight-edge or visual sight down door edge showing curve.

Branch F confirmation: frame plumb and level measurements outside tolerance, related structural symptoms in the same wall plane.
