Deck Board Replacement

Why this matters

A homeowner with a 15-year-old deck commonly has several boards that are rotted, split, or damaged. The work is straightforward but requires matching the existing boards (wood species, size, finish), driving screws correctly into the existing joists, and verifying the underlying structure is sound. When to replace individual boards

  • Specific boards rotted, cracked, or split

When NOT to replace (recommend rebuild):

  • Joists or supporting structure rotted

Materials

Procedure

Step 1: Identify the boards to replace

Walk the deck:

  • Check each board for soft spots, splits, rot
  • Probe suspicious spots with a screwdriver or awl
  • Mark each board to be replaced with chalk or tape

Step 2: Assess underlying structure

  • Inspect joists for rot
  • Verify joist hangers are intact
  • Check ledger board (where deck attaches to house) for soundness
  • Identify any structural issues before replacing boards

If the structure is compromised, address that first or recommend rebuild.

Step 3: Remove failed boards

For each board:

  • Locate the screws (visible from the top)
  • Back out the screws with a drill driver
  • For screws that won't back out:
    • Drill the head off
    • Pull the board up
    • Remove the remaining screw shaft with pliers
  • For severely deteriorated boards, the board may break during removal; collect all pieces

Some boards are nailed (older decks):

  • Pry the board up gently from one end
  • Work along the length
  • Remove nails

Step 4: Inspect joists

Now that the boards are off:

  • Check each joist for soundness
  • Look for rot, splits, or insect damage
  • If joist damage is significant, address before replacing boards (sister a new joist alongside or replace joist if accessible)

Step 5: Measure and cut replacements

  • Measure the existing board span
  • Cut replacement boards to match (typically slightly oversize, then trim to fit)
  • Apply wood preservative to all cut ends (especially pressure-treated lumber)

Step 6: Install replacement boards

For wood boards:

  • Position the board on the joists
  • Maintain typical 1/8 to 1/4 inch gap between boards (for water drainage, board expansion)
  • Drive 2 screws per joist (typically 3 inch deck screws)
  • Drive screws straight; don't over-tighten (causes splits)
  • Check alignment as you go

For composite boards:

  • Use the manufacturer's specific fastener (typically hidden fastener system)
  • Follow the manufacturer's gap and installation specs
  • Composite expansion / contraction is significant; allow proper gaps

For the first and last boards:

  • Often the trim board against the house or end
  • May need special handling for tight fit

Step 7: Verify the installation

  • Walk on each new board; verify firmness
  • No bouncing or movement
  • Boards aligned with adjacent boards
  • No protruding screws or sharp edges

Step 8: Stain or treat (optional)

If the new boards need to match the existing color:

  • Allow new boards to acclimate (typically 30 days for pressure-treated)
  • Apply matching stain or sealer
  • For some woods, multiple coats over the season

Joist replacement / sistering

If a joist is rotted but the rest of the structure is fine:

Sistering a joist

  • Cut a new joist piece the same length as the failed section
  • Attach to the failed joist with bolts or lag screws (one every 12 to 16 inches)
  • The new joist takes the load
  • Cheaper than full replacement

Full joist replacement

  • Disconnect the joist from the ledger and the beam
  • Slide out the failed joist
  • Slide in the replacement
  • Re-attach to ledger and beam

This is more invasive and typically requires removing nearby boards.

Ledger board considerations

The ledger board attaches the deck to the house:

  • Critical structural element
  • Should be properly flashed (water shield)
  • Should be securely attached (lag bolts or specific deck-ledger fasteners)

Failed ledger board = deck collapse risk. Recommend professional inspection if ledger looks compromised; not typically a handyman repair.

Pressure-treated lumber considerations

Pressure-treated lumber:
