Why this matters
A cabinet door that drifts out of alignment again within days of a careful three-axis hinge adjustment is telling you the problem is not in the hinge cams; it is in something the hinge cannot compensate for. European concealed hinges give you depth, height, and side-to-side adjustment, but they assume a square box, sound screw purchase, and a flat door. When the box has racked, the mounting screws have stripped, the door has warped, or the cup bore is blown out, the hinge will hold a setting for a day and then slip or the geometry will simply not converge. Knowing whether the fault is the hinge or the box saves you from chasing reveals around a face frame forever and tells you when the real fix is re-securing a screw, re-squaring a cabinet, or replacing a door rather than turning another cam.
Symptom presentation
Watch which reveal is wrong and whether it changes. A door whose top reveal tightens while the bottom opens up, growing over hours of use, is sagging: the hinge is pulling out of the panel or the door is too heavy for the hinge count. A door cocked diagonally that you cannot square with side adjustment usually sits on a racked or out-of-square box. A door that touches its neighbor on one side only, and re-touches after you reset it, points to slipping mounting plates or a stripped screw that walks under load. A door bowed so the center hits but the corners gap is warped. Open and close it: if the door springs or the hinge clicks oddly, the cup or arm may be damaged. Note whether both hinges or only one are misbehaving, because a single bad hinge localizes the fault.
Quick checks
Check the box for square first with a tape across both diagonals; equal diagonals mean a square box, and a difference means the cabinet is racked and no door adjustment will hold. Press on the door near each hinge and feel for a hinge plate that shifts against the cabinet wall, which means loose plate screws. Tug the hinge cup in the door; a cup that wobbles in its bore means stripped or blown-out particleboard around the 35 mm bore. Lay a straightedge across the door face and look for a bow. Confirm the screws bite: back one mounting-plate screw out a turn and feel whether it grabs fresh material or spins. Count the hinges against the door size and weight, because an oversized or solid door on only two hinges sags no matter how you set the cams.

Branch 1, box is out of square (unequal diagonals): re-square and re-anchor the cabinet to the wall and to its neighbors before touching the hinge. The door problem is a symptom of a racked carcass. Branch 2, box is square but mounting-plate or cup screws are stripped: the hinge slips under load and re-misaligns. Re-secure the screws into fresh material. Branch 3, box square and screws sound but the door is warped: side and height cams cannot remove a bow; the door needs flattening or replacement. Branch 4, box, screws, and door are all good but the hinge arm or cup is bent, the cam is worn, or the spring is weak: the hinge itself is failing and the setting will not hold. Replace the hinge. Branch 5, geometry simply will not converge because the door is too heavy for two hinges: add a hinge or upgrade to a higher-load hinge.
Confirming diagnosis
Confirm Branch 1 by clamping the box square and re-checking the door reveals; if they snap into line when the box is forced square, the carcass is the cause. Confirm Branch 2 by removing a mounting screw and inspecting the hole: chewed, oversized, or dusty threads confirm stripping. A screw that no longer holds torque confirms it. Confirm Branch 3 with a straightedge and feeler; a gap over roughly 1/16 inch across the door is a meaningful warp that the hinge cannot fix. Confirm Branch 4 by swapping a suspect hinge with a known-good one of the same type and seeing whether the door holds its setting. Confirm Branch 5 by hanging the door and watching whether the lower reveal opens immediately under the door's own weight, which means the hinge count is undersized for the load.
Remediation
For a racked box, shim and re-fasten the cabinet to the studs and screw adjoining boxes together so the carcass is square and stays square, then adjust the door. For stripped plate screws, fill the hole with glue and a hardwood dowel or toothpicks, or step up to a larger or longer screw that finds fresh material, and reset the plate. For a blown-out cup bore, glue and dowel the bore or move to a hinge with a cup-reinforcing collar; a badly blown bore means a new door. For a warped door, try clamping with a counter-bow over time on a solid panel, but plan to replace a warped MDF or veneer door, since they rarely recover. For a worn or bent hinge, replace it with the correct overlay and arm type. For a heavy door, add a third hinge or switch to a heavy-duty hinge rated for the weight, then run the standard depth-height-side adjustment sequence to dial in even reveals. Work the adjustment in a fixed order so settings do not fight each other: set depth first so the door sits at the right overlay and the gasket seals, then height so the top and bottom rails align across a run of doors, then side-to-side so the vertical reveals match the neighbors. Lock each cam before moving to the next axis, and on a bank of doors set the worst offender to the center reference and bring its neighbors to match it rather than chasing each door independently.
