Cabinet Door Sags Only On Upper Uppers After Rehang Decision Tree

Why this matters

A kitchen rehang where every door lines up except the tall doors on the high upper cabinets is a classic "the variable is the door, not your work" trap. The reflex is to keep cranking the hinge adjustment screws, but a door that sags only on the upper uppers is telling you the load and the box are the issue: taller/heavier doors on those cabinets, fewer or undersized hinges, mounting plates pulling out of particleboard, or a cabinet box that was never plumb and only shows it on the longer door. Endless hinge tweaking on a stripped plate screw or an under-hinged door just moves the gap around. This tree separates a hinge-adjustment fix from a hinge-count, fastener, or box-square fix.

Symptom presentation

  • Tall upper-cabinet doors hang low on the latch side; the reveal opens at the top and closes at the bottom.
  • The problem appears only on the cabinets up high (often the over-fridge or over-range tall doors), not the standard 30 in uppers.
  • Door corner contacts the neighbor or the face frame; soft-close no longer pulls flush.
  • Hinge adjustment screws are at or near the end of their travel and the sag persists.

Quick checks

  1. Count and size the hinges. A door taller than ~40 in or heavier than the 2-hinge rating needs three hinges. Two hinges on a tall upper door will always sag.
  2. Check the mounting-plate screws. Wiggle the door; a plate that moves means the screws have stripped out of the particleboard or melamine box side. This is the single most common after-rehang sag.
  3. Sight the box for square. Hold a level on the cabinet side and across the face frame. A box that's out of plumb shows up on a tall door as a tapered reveal even with perfect hinges.
  4. Confirm hinge-arm seating. A hinge clip not fully snapped onto the plate sits proud and drops the door.

Isolation tree

Step 1 - Does the door move on the box when you push the closed door's free corner? If the whole hinge plate shifts, the fault is fastener pull-out (Step 2). If the plate is rock-solid and the door still sags, go to Step 3.

Step 2 - Fastener pull-out. Remove the door, back out the plate screws, and inspect the holes. Spun, oversized, or blown-out holes in particleboard won't hold a standard screw. Remedies in order of preference:

  • Relocate the plate slightly to fresh material and re-drill.
  • Glue and dowel/plug the hole, let cure, redrill.
  • Step up to a coarse-thread #8 or a confirmat-style cabinet screw sized for engineered panels. Avoid longer screws that punch through the cabinet side or into the adjacent box.

Step 3 - Hinge count and rating. With plates solid, weigh or estimate the door. A tall solid or 5-piece door on two hinges exceeds the per-hinge load and the lower edge droops. Add a third (or fourth) hinge centered between the existing pair, bore the matching plate hole, and redistribute the load. This alone fixes most "ran out of adjustment" sags.

Step 4 - Box square. With enough correctly seated hinges and solid plates, recheck the reveal. If the door still tapers, the cabinet box itself is out of plumb - common on the high tall cabinets that were shimmed last during the original install. Check the cabinet's level and the face-frame plumb. Re-shim or re-screw the cabinet to the wall to bring the box back to plumb; the door reveal follows the box.

Step 5 - Hinge adjustment, last. Only after plates, hinge count, and box are right do you use the three Euro-hinge adjustments: side/lateral screw for left-right reveal, the cam/depth screw for in-out, and the vertical (slot on the plate) for up-down. If you're at the end of adjustment travel, you skipped Step 2, 3, or 4.

Confirming diagnosis

Isolated when the corrective action - re-anchored plate, added hinge, or re-plumbed box - brings the door reveal parallel top-to-bottom and the soft-close pulls flush without the door corner kissing its neighbor. Cross-check by opening and closing several times: a door fixed only by maxing the adjustment screws will creep back; a door fixed at the plate/hinge-count/box level holds. Verify the fastener fix by pushing the closed door corner - no plate movement.

Remediation

  • Pulled plate screws: relocate to fresh material, or plug-and-redrill, or step up to coarse-thread/confirmat cabinet screws rated for engineered panels.
  • Under-hinged tall door: add a hinge (three on doors over ~40 in or above the 2-hinge load rating), bore the plate hole, rebalance.
  • Out-of-plumb box: re-shim and re-screw the cabinet to studs to restore plumb before final door adjustment.
  • Final hinge tuning: use lateral, depth, and vertical adjustments to dial the reveal once the structural items are solid.
  • For chronic engineered-panel pull-out, consider through-mounting or a backer where access allows.
