Cabinet Door Sags More in Summer Than Winter: Temporal Single-Observable Diagnosis

Why this matters

A cabinet door that rubs or sags noticeably in summer but clears up by winter is not broken - it is telling you exactly what is happening. The seasonal pattern eliminates random causes and points to one of three mechanisms. A tech who adjusts a European hinge in January will find the door rubbing again by July if the underlying cause is wood expansion, because the hinge adjustment just removed the winter clearance. Diagnosing the correct branch before adjusting saves a callback six months later.

The three temporal causes

Cause 1: Solid-wood or wood-core door panel absorbs summer humidity. Solid wood and MDF-core doors take on moisture in humid months and shed it in dry winter months. The door panel grows dimensionally - primarily in width and height - which increases its weight and shifts its center of gravity outward on the hinge axis. The increased lever arm magnifies the sag force on the hinges, and a door that barely cleared the cabinet floor in winter now drags by summer.

Signs: the door's gap at the top hinge side decreases in summer; the bottom corner opposite the hinge swings downward and may contact the cabinet body or adjacent door. The sag is uniform from top to bottom of the door - the whole door drops, not just one corner.

Cause 2: Hinge cup not fully seated in the bore. European concealed hinges (35 mm cup) rely on a fully seated cup in the bore for alignment. A cup that is slightly loose or installed at a shallow depth lets the door shift under load. In winter, low humidity causes the cabinet body to contract slightly, which actually reduces the hinge cup's lateral movement. In summer, the cabinet body expands and the loose cup has more freedom to shift. The sag appears seasonal but is fundamentally a marginal installation.

Signs: the hinge cup can be wiggled in the bore by hand. The sag is more pronounced at one hinge (the loose one) than the other. Tightening the hinge mounting screws temporarily resolves the sag.

Cause 3: Soft-close mechanism binds at expanded geometry. Some soft-close cartridges have a narrow operating window. When the door panel expands in humidity, the door's geometry changes slightly - it no longer hangs at the same angle it did when the soft-close was calibrated. The soft-close resists the out-of-geometry position, which reads as a sag or binding drag that gets worse in summer. In winter, the door contracts back into the cartridge's operating range and the drag disappears.

Signs: the binding or drag sensation is felt only at the end of the closing travel, not at the start. Disabling the soft-close cartridge (most have a tension adjustment that can be backed off to zero) temporarily eliminates the drag.

Diagnosis sequence

Step 1: Check the hinge cup seating. With the door open, press on the hinge cup from the door side. Any movement means the cup is loose - this is Cause 2 regardless of season. Tighten or replace the cup fasteners and re-evaluate.

Step 2: Measure the door gap in season. With calipers or a feeler gauge, measure the gap between the door top edge and the cabinet face frame at the hinge side and the latch side. A gap that is noticeably smaller at the top hinge side in summer than in winter (more than 1/16 inch differential) confirms door expansion (Cause 1). Photograph and record measurements for comparison.

Step 3: Test the soft-close. Back off the soft-close cartridge tension to minimum. Close the door slowly by hand. If the drag disappears at minimum tension, Cause 3 is confirmed. Restore tension and plan a hinge height/lateral adjustment to re-center the door's geometry.

Repair by cause

Cause 1 (wood expansion): Adjust the hinge height screw to restore clearance using the summer measurement as the set point. Accept that in winter there will be a larger gap - this is the nature of solid wood. Advise the customer. If the expansion is severe (more than 3/16 inch seasonal change), recommend replacing the door with an MDF-core or thermofoil door, which is dimensionally stable year-round.

Cause 2 (loose cup): Tighten the hinge mounting screws. If the bore is stripped, plug the screw holes with toothpick and wood adhesive, allow to cure, and re-drive. If the bore itself is oversized, the hinge cup and insert must be replaced with a 35 mm cup that includes a locking insert. After securing the cup, adjust hinge height and lateral position for correct door alignment.

Cause 3 (soft-close binding): Adjust hinge height and lateral screws so the door hangs in the correct geometry at summer expansion dimensions. Restore soft-close tension. Confirm smooth operation through the full close travel.
