Transfer Switch Installation

Goal

Install an automatic transfer switch (ATS) that safely connects a standby generator to a home's electrical system. The transfer switch is what makes whole-house generators automatic - disconnects from grid, connects to generator, monitors for utility return.

Prerequisites

  • Transfer switch sized for service (200A for typical residential)
  • Electrical permit
  • Licensed electrician (legally required)
  • Tools: wire stripper, lugs, torque wrench, voltage meter
  • 2-4 hours per installation
  • Customer power off during work (or use temporary panel)

Types of transfer switches

Manual transfer switch:

  • Operator manually flips between utility + generator
  • Cheaper ()
  • Reliable but inconvenient
  • Best for: portable generators, infrequent use
  • NOT for whole-house standby

Automatic transfer switch (ATS):

  • Senses utility loss; transfers automatically
  • Returns to utility when restored
  • Used for: whole-house standby generators

Service-entrance transfer switch:

  • Combines main disconnect + transfer switch in one
  • More expensive but cleaner install
  • Often required by code in newer installations

Installation procedure

Step 1: Plan installation location

ATS goes between utility meter + main panel:

  • Outside next to meter: service-entrance-rated ATS
  • Inside, next to main panel: standard ATS
  • Conduit run from generator to ATS
  • Customer's preference + code requirements

Step 2: Shut down power

  1. Open utility main breaker (or disconnect at meter)
  2. Verify with voltage tester at panel
  3. Wear arc-flash PPE (face shield, gloves) per OSHA

Step 3: Mount the ATS

  1. Position on wall at code-required height + clearance
  2. Use proper anchors (drywall anchors NOT adequate; into stud)
  3. Level + plumb

Step 4: Run conduits

From utility meter → ATS:

  • 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" PVC or EMT
  • Sized for service amperage

From ATS → main panel:

  • Same size

From generator → ATS:

  • Already run (during generator install)

Step 5: Land utility conductors

  1. Bring utility feeders into ATS through utility-side conduit
  2. Strip insulation per torque chart
  3. Land on UTILITY side lugs
  4. Torque to manufacturer spec

Step 6: Land panel conductors

  1. Wire from ATS LOAD side → main panel
  2. Use same gauge as service
  3. Verify breaker(s) in main panel match feeder

Step 7: Land generator conductors

  1. From generator output → ATS GENERATOR side
  2. Verify size + insulation rating
  3. Torque to spec

Step 8: Land control wiring

  1. From generator → ATS (multi-conductor control cable)
  2. Communicates: start signal, generator-running signal, transfer signal
  3. Match wire-to-terminal numbers (manufacturer spec)

Step 9: Land neutrals + grounds

  1. Neutral from utility → ATS neutral bar → panel neutral bar
  2. Ground from utility → ATS ground → panel ground
  3. Separate neutral + ground at main service panel (NEC)
  4. Verify NEUTRAL is SWITCHED at ATS (4-pole switch) - required by code for grounded systems

Step 10: Restore power

  1. Verify all connections torqued
  2. Close service disconnect
  3. Verify voltage at ATS UTILITY side (240V)

Step 11: Test transfer switch

Mode 1: Utility present

  • Verify utility on
  • ATS shows utility position
  • Load served by utility
  • Generator NOT running

Mode 2: Simulate outage (verify auto-transfer)

  • Open utility disconnect (briefly)
  • ATS detects loss within 5-10 seconds
  • ATS sends start signal to generator
  • Generator starts (20-30 seconds typical)
  • ATS transfers to generator position
  • Load now served by generator

Mode 3: Restore utility (verify auto-return)

  • Close utility disconnect
  • ATS detects utility return
  • After delay (5-30 minutes, customer-configurable, prevents oscillation if utility intermittent), ATS transfers back to utility
  • Generator runs cooldown 1-2 min, shuts off

Step 12: Programming + customization

Programmable settings (typical ATS):

  • Transfer delay (default 10-30 sec)
  • Return delay (5-30 min)
  • Cooldown delay (1-2 min)
  • Weekly exercise day/time
  • Voltage tolerance bands

Set per customer preference (e.g., exercise Saturday morning, not Sunday night).

Critical code requirements

NEC compliance:

  • NEC 700: Emergency systems
  • NEC 702: Optional standby systems (whole-house most residential)
  • NEC 705: Interconnected electric power production sources (PV systems)

Specific requirements:

  • Switched neutral on grounded systems
  • Service-entrance rated ATS for service-disconnect applications
  • Working clearance at panel (30" wide, 36" deep)
  • Disconnect-able from utility-side (typically meter pull or main breaker)
  • Generator OUTPUT cannot back-feed to utility (mandatory)

Common pitfalls

  • No switched neutral: shock hazard, code violation
  • Generator + utility connected simultaneously: back-feed (kills lineman; major liability)
  • Incorrect generator wire size: voltage drop or overheat
  • Loose terminals: heat damage, failure
  • No load test: defects discovered when needed
  • Wrong ATS rating: under-sized for service amperage
  • Permit not closed: inspection failure
  • Mis-programmed delays: nuisance transfers

Wire sizing

For 200A service:

  • Main feeders: 2/0 copper or 4/0 aluminum
  • Control: 14-12 AWG multi-conductor

For 100A service:

  • Main feeders: #3 copper or 1/0 aluminum

Always verify with NEC tables for run distance + voltage drop.

Communication wiring

Generator-ATS communication:

  • Typically 14 AWG, 6-12 conductors
  • Some use shielded cable in noisy environments
  • Run in same conduit as power OR separate conduit

Wires:

  • Start signal (T1, T2)
  • Generator running confirmation
  • Generator alarm
  • Battery + charger
  • Status LEDs

Match wire color/numbers between generator + ATS per manufacturer.

Customer briefing

Show customer:

  • How to read ATS status (UTILITY / GENERATOR / OFF positions)
  • Manual operate (in case of emergency)
  • Where to reset breakers if tripped
  • Weekly exercise schedule
  • What to do if ATS fails to transfer (rarely happens; service call)

Permit + inspection

  • Schedule electrical rough inspection (if applicable)
  • Final inspection after wiring complete
  • Some jurisdictions require generator hook + transfer test in inspector's presence

NEVER WIRE A GENERATOR OUTPUT DIRECTLY TO THE MAIN PANEL WITHOUT A PROPER TRANSFER SWITCH. Even with a "manual disconnect" approach, the risk of accidentally back-feeding the grid is severe - utility lineman can be electrocuted by a generator they don't know is running. This is the #1 generator-related fatality cause. The transfer switch is non-negotiable; pay for the right ATS + install it correctly.
