Generator Remote Monitoring Platforms
Why this matters
A standby generator that customer hasn't looked at in 6 months may already be in fault when an outage occurs. Generac's Mobile Link, Kohler's OnCue, Cummins's PowerCommand, and the various third-party monitoring platforms exist specifically to catch faults before they matter. A monitored generator that throws "low battery" in October is repaired in October; the same generator without monitoring throws "low battery" in February during an outage and fails to start. The monitoring service costs a modest per year per generator; the alternative is calling the customer with the bad news after the outage. The contractor who explains monitoring value and gets the customer subscribed extends the equipment life, prevents emergencies, and creates ongoing service relationships.
What monitoring platforms do
Modern generator monitoring:
- Continuous status: utility / generator / fault states
- Fault alerts: push notifications when something is wrong
- Exercise verification: confirms weekly exercise ran successfully
- Run-hour tracking: how many hours on this oil, this filter
- Battery monitoring: voltage, charge state, prediction of replacement
- Fuel level (some): for propane installs with telemetry tanks
- Service reminders: when to schedule the next service
- Remote start / stop (some): for testing or specific scenarios
- Historical data: trends in run-time, frequency, voltage stability
The platform may be:
- Brand-integrated (Generac Mobile Link, Kohler OnCue, Cummins PowerCommand)
- Third-party (Telgen, Magnis, Genaccess, Power Plus)
- Cloud-only vs on-site server-based
For residential, the brand-integrated platform is almost always the right choice (no additional hardware, lowest cost, integrated with the generator's own controls).

- Cellular service: a modest per year (Mobile Link 4G or 5G subscription)
- Wi-Fi: free if the customer's home Wi-Fi reaches the generator

- Features: full status, fault alerts, run-hour tracking, service reminders
- Connects to: most modern Generac Guardian, Protector, EcoGen residential models
- Setup: requires a Generac Mobile Link cellular module (per the application) added to the generator at install or after
Kohler OnCue
- Cellular connection
- Subscription: ~a modest per year
- App: OnCue Plus
- Features: similar to Mobile Link
- Connects to: Kohler residential standby
- Some Kohler models have OnCue integration as standard; others require an add-on module
Cummins PowerCommand
- Cellular connection (PowerCommand Cloud)
- Subscription typically: a moderate per year (varies by tier)
- Features: full status, fault alerts, on-demand testing, asset management
- More commonly used in commercial; residential variant available
Briggs and Stratton InfoHub
- Less common; specific Briggs models
- Cellular or Wi-Fi
Honda EU (portable)
- Newer Honda inverter models have Bluetooth monitoring
- Range-limited; not for remote standby

Setup procedure (Generac Mobile Link example)
The Generac Mobile Link is the most common residential monitoring add-on. Setup:
Step 1: Acquire the module
- 4G LTE Cellular Module: ~per OEM
- 5G LTE Cellular Module: newer; similar price
- Wi-Fi Module: lowest-cost option (if customer Wi-Fi reaches the generator)
Step 2: Install the module
- Disconnect power to the generator
- Open the generator enclosure
- Locate the module install location (specific bracket inside the cabinet)
- Mount the module
- Connect to the generator's communication bus per the install instructions
- Connect the antenna (cellular requires antenna mounted on the cabinet exterior, oriented for signal)
- Reconnect power
Step 3: Activate the cellular subscription
- Visit mobilelink.generac.com or use the Mobile Link app
- Enter the module's serial number
- Provide customer billing information for subscription
- Activate the cellular service
Step 4: Pair to customer's app
- Customer downloads Mobile Link app
- Customer creates account
- Customer enters module serial number
- Customer's account is paired to the generator
- Generator appears in the app
Step 5: Configure alerts
- Define which faults trigger push notifications
- Define which faults trigger email (if customer wants email backup)
- Define quiet hours (no notifications overnight if preferred)
- Define service contractor: contractor's contact info can be added so faults notify the contractor too
Step 6: Test the monitoring
- Initiate a test exercise from the app
- Verify the generator starts
- Verify the app shows the running state
- Verify push notification of test exercise
- Cancel the test
Contractor-side use
For the contractor:
- Monitor multiple customer generators from one app account
- Receive alerts for customer generators (with customer permission)
- Schedule service visits based on run-hour thresholds
- Diagnose faults remotely before visiting (sometimes resolves the issue with customer guidance)
- Provide proactive service that the customer hasn't asked for
A contractor with 50 monitored generators sees patterns: model X has more frequent fault Y; certain installations have battery issues at certain ages. This pattern recognition improves future installs.
