Portable Generator Use + Safety Reference

Overview

Portable generators are common but cause hundreds of carbon monoxide deaths annually. As locksmiths/technicians often consulted on emergency power, knowing portable generator safety is essential.

Critical safety: carbon monoxide

CO is odorless, colorless, deadly.

Sources:

  • Exhaust from generator engine
  • Any combustion engine

Risk level:

  • 70 ppm: mild headache after 1-2 hours
  • 200 ppm: severe headache + nausea after 2-3 hours
  • 800 ppm: dizziness + nausea after 45 minutes; death after 2-3 hours
  • 1,600 ppm: headache + nausea immediately; death after 1 hour

A portable generator inside a garage can reach 1,000+ ppm within 10 minutes.

Rules:

  • NEVER run a portable generator indoors - not in garage, not in basement, not in shed, not even with door open
  • Generator must be outside, 20+ ft from house openings
  • Exhaust direction: away from doors, windows, vents
  • CO detector indoors: every floor of home with sleeping area

Despite these warnings, 70-80 Americans die from CO poisoning during outages each year. Always educate customers.

Generator placement during use

Minimum distances:

  • 20 ft from any building (some areas require 25+)
  • 15 ft from any window or door
  • Never closer to AC intake (CO drawn into home)

Surface:

  • Dry, level, fire-resistant
  • Concrete, gravel, paving (NOT grass or wet ground)
  • Out of weather (rain/snow can damage)
  • Some generators have weather-resistant features; check spec

Refueling:

  • Generator must be COOL (15-30 minutes after shutdown)
  • Refueling hot generator = fire risk
  • Outside, away from ignition sources

Connection methods (most dangerous topic)

Method 1: Extension cords (safest portable)

  • Generator outside; extension cords to appliances inside
  • 12-gauge minimum, 50-100 ft maximum
  • Heavy-duty outdoor cords only
  • Run cords under door if needed (with door slightly open + sealed)
  • Each appliance: one cord (don't daisy-chain)

Method 2: Generator transfer switch (proper installation)

  • Permanent transfer switch at panel
  • Generator plugs into outlet, transfers selected circuits

Method 3: Generator inlet (with transfer switch)

  • Inlet box (outdoor receptacle) connects to transfer switch
  • Generator cord plugs into inlet
  • Better than other methods for ease + safety

What NEVER to do (illegal, dangerous):

Backfeed:

  • Plug generator cord into outlet
  • Generator energizes home wiring
  • Generator output goes BACKWARD through panel into utility lines
  • Lineman repairing utility lines gets electrocuted by your generator
  • CRIMINAL CHARGES POSSIBLE if a lineman dies from your backfeed
  • ILLEGAL EVERYWHERE

If a customer is doing this, intervene + recommend transfer switch ASAP.

Reverse-plug "suicide cord":

  • Plug with male ends on both sides
  • Plugs into generator + into outlet
  • Same backfeed risk + creates exposed energized prongs
  • ILLEGAL + deadly

Fuel handling

Gasoline:

  • Approved fuel containers only
  • 5-gallon max per container
  • Fresh fuel (degrades in 3-6 months without stabilizer)
  • Stored in well-ventilated area
  • Away from ignition + heat sources
  • Generator shutdown + cool before refueling

Propane:

  • Tank in vertical orientation
  • Approved tank fittings
  • Storage outdoors only

Diesel:

  • Less flammable but still hazardous
  • Approved containers

Operating procedure

Starting:

  1. Place generator outside, 20+ ft from home
  2. Connect fuel if not direct-connected
  3. Open fuel valve
  4. Set choke ON
  5. Pull start cord OR turn key
  6. Allow warmup (1-2 minutes)
  7. Set choke OFF
  8. Verify smooth operation

Loading:

  1. Connect heaviest load first (e.g., AC pump)
  2. Wait 30 seconds for generator to stabilize
  3. Add additional loads gradually
  4. Never exceed generator capacity (printed on data plate)

Shutdown:

  1. Disconnect loads
  2. Run unloaded for 30-60 seconds (cool down)
  3. Turn off fuel
  4. Allow remaining fuel to burn out (carburetor) OR turn off ignition
  5. Let cool before refueling

Maintenance

Before every storm season:

  • Test run (5-10 minutes)
  • Verify fuel: fresh, in container, accessible
  • Verify oil level
  • Verify spark plug functional
  • Test outlet receptacles

During use:

  • Check oil level every 6-8 hours of run time
  • Refuel as needed (after cool down)

After use:

  • Clean exterior
  • Drain old fuel OR add stabilizer for storage
  • Store in dry location

Long-term storage:

  • Drain fuel + run dry, OR use stabilizer
  • Disconnect spark plug
  • Cover lightly (but allow air circulation)

Buying advice for customers

Sizing for portable:

  • 3-5 kW: essential circuits only (fridge, lights, phone charger)
  • 5-7 kW: above + small AC OR microwave
  • 7-10 kW: above + medium AC + multiple essentials
  • 10+ kW: borderline whole-house but typically standby

Features to look for:

  • Electric start (vs pull start)
  • Built-in fuel gauge
  • GFCI outlets (required by 2020 ANSI)
  • Low-oil shutoff
  • Wheel kit (for portability)
  • Hour meter

Brands:

  • Honda, Yamaha: premium, quiet, reliable
  • Generac, Kohler: mid-tier, good value
  • Champion, DuroMax: budget, less refined

Inverter generators

Newer technology:

  • Cleaner power output (for sensitive electronics: laptops, TVs, medical devices)
  • Quieter operation
  • Higher fuel efficiency
  • 25-50% premium price

Worth the premium if customer has expensive electronics OR noise concern.

Code reminders

  • EPA + ANSI standards: most modern generators comply
  • Carbon monoxide detection: ANSI/CSA standard now requires CO detection that shuts off generator in elevated CO situations
  • Fuel cap leak: ANSI requires cap that prevents leaks

Standards from 2020 onwards represent significant safety improvement.

Customer education at install / sale

Every customer should know:

  • Where generator goes (outside, 20+ ft, exhaust away)
  • How long it runs on a tank (typical 5-10 hours for portable)
  • Fuel handling safety
  • Connection method (extension cords vs proper transfer switch)
  • When to refuel (after cool-down)
  • Storage for hurricane season
  • CO detector check before storm season

When customer needs upgrade

If customer has portable + repeatedly uses during outages:

  • Sell standby generator
  • Permanently installed
  • Auto-start, no refueling
  • Whole-house power
  • 5x cost but transforms outage experience

NEVER let a customer operate a portable generator inside their garage, even with door open. CO accumulates faster than ventilation can clear. 70-80 Americans die from this annually. If you see a customer doing this, intervene + educate. Lives are at stake. The customer often doesn't understand the risk; they need to hear "this can kill your family."
