Generator Briggs Fortress No Crank vs No Start Fault Tree
Why this matters
On a Briggs and Stratton Fortress (and the related Standby line) home standby, the single most important branch point at the start of any no-run call is whether the engine cranks. "No crank" and "no start" are entirely different failure families: no-crank lives in the battery, starter, and start-signal circuit; no-start (cranks but will not fire) lives in fuel and ignition. Techs who skip this split waste a visit pricing a carburetor when the real problem is a dead battery, or vice versa. Establishing crank-or-no-crank in the first two minutes routes the entire rest of the diagnosis. This tree forces that split, then walks each family to a confirmed cause with real readings.
Symptom presentation
The unit fails to run on the weekly exercise or on an outage. The defining observation is what the starter does when start is commanded: total silence or a single click (no crank), versus the engine spinning briskly but never catching (no start). The controller may show an overcrank lockout (which implies it did crank - a no-start) or a battery/start fault (which points at no-crank). The customer's "it just clicks" vs "it spins but won't catch" usually tells you the branch before you arrive.
Quick checks
- Command a start and listen. Solenoid click with no rotation, or dead silence, equals no-crank. Brisk rotation with no firing equals no-start.
- Measure battery voltage at rest and during the start attempt. A Fortress battery should sit near 12.6 V static; if it collapses below about 9.6 V on the attempt, the battery or a cable connection is the fault.
- Confirm the unit is in AUTO and not in OFF; confirm any DC control fuse is intact.
- For a no-start, confirm spark and gas: NG/LP selected correctly, valves open, inlet pressure within OEM spec (about 5 to 7 in WC NG, 10 to 11 in WC LP vapor).

NO-CRANK FAMILY
Branch A1 - Dead or weak battery. The most common no-crank. Static voltage low, or full at rest but collapsing on the attempt. Load-test or measure cranking voltage; below the controller brownout floor it will not crank or will brown out mid-crank. Clean and torque both cable ends - a corroded or loose terminal mimics a dead battery. Replace a battery that will not hold cranking capacity and confirm the charge circuit is restoring it during run.
Branch A2 - Start-signal / control-fuse / mode. If the battery is strong but the engine never even tries to crank, the start command is not reaching the starter. Confirm AUTO mode, an intact DC control fuse, and that the controller is issuing the start (it should during a simulated outage). A blown control fuse or a unit in OFF leaves a healthy battery doing nothing.
Branch A3 - Starter motor or solenoid. Strong battery, good start command, but only a click or nothing: test the starter solenoid and motor. A solenoid that clicks but does not engage, or a starter with an open winding or worn brushes, will not turn the engine. Verify voltage reaches the starter on the attempt; if voltage is present and it will not spin, the starter/solenoid is the fault.
Branch A4 - Mechanical seizure or hydrolock. Rare but real: if the engine is mechanically locked the starter cannot turn it. With power isolated, confirm the engine rotates by hand. A hydrolocked cylinder (fuel or oil intrusion) or a seized engine blocks crank and must be addressed before any electrical work matters.
NO-START FAMILY (cranks, will not fire)
Branch B1 - No fuel delivery. Cranks briskly, never fires, spark confirmed good: chase fuel. Verify gas selection (NG vs LP), all valves open, the gas valve/regulator energizing on crank, and inlet pressure holding under crank flow. A static-good pressure that collapses on crank means a closed/partly closed valve, a clogged regulator, or LP vaporization limits in cold weather.
Branch B2 - No spark / weak spark. Cranks, fuel confirmed present, no fire: test for spark at the plug. No spark points to the ignition module, coil, kill/ground circuit, or a fouled/wrong-gap plug. A killed ignition (a shutdown lead grounded by a fault) produces crank-no-spark. Confirm a strong blue spark before condemning fuel.
Branch B3 - Cold-only no-start. If it cranks and only fails to fire when cold, the cold-enrichment (choke/primer) is not functioning - linkage stuck, or a hose to the mixer/regulator off. Confirm enrichment actuates on a cold crank.
A standby can auto-start during diagnosis. Before working on the starter, fuel, or ignition, set the controller to OFF, disconnect the battery negative, and close the fuel shutoff. Never check for spark with the fuel system open and leaking. Any gaseous-fuel work requires an approved leak test before return to service.
Confirming diagnosis
For a no-crank fix, the engine cranks briskly with cranking voltage staying above the brownout floor and starts on a simulated outage. For a no-start fix, the engine fires within the normal start window, holds rated frequency, and completes a transfer/cooldown cycle. In both cases clear any latched fault, return to AUTO, and re-prove a full automatic cycle. Record battery cranking voltage and inlet gas pressure so the next call has a baseline.
Remediation
No-crank: replace a spent battery and service cable connections, restore the start signal/control fuse/mode, or replace a failed starter/solenoid; free a mechanical seizure before electrical work. No-start: restore fuel delivery (valve, regulator, pressure, LP vaporization), restore spark (module, coil, kill circuit, plug), or restore cold enrichment. Always finish gaseous-fuel work with a leak test and a verified automatic start.
