Garage Door Safety Customer Education
Overview
Garage doors are the largest moving object in most homes. Most homeowners don't think about safety until something goes wrong - and "something going wrong" with a garage door has caused crush injuries, fatalities (especially children), and property damage. This is the customer-conversation reference for educating customers on garage door safety + the upgrades that prevent the common incidents.
What customers should know
Photo eyes:
- Required since 1993 (UL 325)
- Must be 6" or less above the floor
- Both LED indicators should be steady (not blinking)
- Don't block the beam intentionally
- Wave your hand through the beam during close to verify they work
Safety reverse:
- Door MUST reverse on contact with any obstruction during close
- Test with a 2x4 placed on the floor under the door - door should reverse on contact
- Test monthly per UL 325 recommendation
- If safety reverse fails, the opener needs adjustment OR replacement immediately
Manual emergency release:
- Red rope handle on the opener trolley
- Pulls the door free from the opener for manual operation
- Useful during power outages OR if opener fails
- Pull DOWN to release; pull TOWARD the door to re-engage
Lockouts:
- Many openers have a "vacation lock" that disables remote controls
- Useful when away from home for extended periods
- Different from the manual emergency release
Battery backup:
- New requirement in some states (CA since 2019)
- Opens door during power outage so customer isn't trapped
Common safety incidents (and prevention)
Children getting under closing door:
- Photo eyes prevent this WHEN they work + ARE aligned
- Customer education: don't disable photo eyes; replace them if failing
- Layered: install + maintain a child-safe lockout when nobody supervises
Door falling from broken cable or spring:
- Failures are largely preventable with annual maintenance
- Customer education: a noisy garage door OR one that lifts inconsistently is showing maintenance needs
Fingers crushed in door section seams:
- Modern doors have pinch-resistant designs (interlocking section meeting points)
- Older doors don't; quote a door replacement OR retrofit hinges if customer's door is the older flat-section type
Vehicle damage when door doesn't reverse:
- Test safety reverse monthly
- If it fails the 2x4 test, the opener's close force is too high - adjust OR replace
Burglary through compromised opener:
- Old openers use static codes that thieves capture + replay
- Modern openers use rolling-code security
- Quote opener replacement for any customer with a pre-2000 opener (security AND safety reasons)

A 5-minute safety conversation at every visit converts service calls into deeper customer relationships. The customer remembers "the guy who took time to show me how the safety features work" - and refers him to neighbors. This is free trust-building that pays back over years.
